The price of pizza has gotten out of hand. amirite?
by Anonymous4 months ago
I think the issue isn't that individual restaurants are greedily charging too much. Rather that the owners cannot make rent without charging those prices.
by Background_Fish14624 months ago
The problem has been real estate costs. We have been paying for rich people's commercial real estate investments for decades.
by Secret_Delivery2894 months ago
Sure but people who hold these properties in portfolios only care about being greedy so they buy, jack up rates to cover costs, sell at higher price. We are finally beginning to see the high end of the market begin to backslide a bit finally. Only leeches make a living sucking on the labor of others.
by Secret_Delivery2894 months ago
This is definitely part of it. There have been several brick and mortar places in my area that have closed their doors because they can't afford rent and they don't want to jack up their prices. Because nobody wants a $25 BLT. And well, yes, it's one of the most delicious BLTs you'll ever have in your life, and the bacon is literally from the farm down the street, it doesn't matter because they can't afford to pay rent.
by Anonymous4 months ago
It's not one of the most delicious here, that's another part of the problem. Food has gotten significantly worse other than a few specific places but prices have doubled
by No-Recipe46804 months ago
The problem is that everybody everywhere is greedy and overcharging!! š” This inflates my angry
by Larsonedwin4 months ago
True dat.
by Walterjusten4 months ago
You're exactly right, the fault isn't on the pizza place owners it's on the economy and the housing market or commercial or whatever category it's in. Prices are absurdly high even for a very small property with limited space
by Anonymous4 months ago
They're charging the price that gets them the maximum revenue, regardless of their fixed costs. Do you assume that if rent went down, they'd willing charge a price that makes them less overall revenue, just because?
by AttitudeAutomatic4 months ago
It doesn't help that if you succeed as a business the landlord will use that as justification to raise the rent
by Glass_Smell_2274 months ago
Or they think they should be swimming in money because they started the business. Like 7 figure yearly income consistently, even for small businesses. Customer loyalty and satisfaction usually goes out the window when owners are forced to dip into their profits deeper to cover rising costs. Should they be wealthier than most people? Sure, lf they put the blood and sweat into it. But a lot of them think they're owed more and more every year despite the brutal economy for consumers. Not sustainable.
by Anonymous4 months ago
Not only rent but cost of food and labor. Minimum wage keeps going up which means that experienced employees have to be paid even more.
by Expert-Zebra35414 months ago
Not to mention the fact that the pizza shop owner likes buying donuts in the morning and those sucker's are expensive too now. So they have to make more as an owner for them to keep their current lifestyle.
by Garrick784 months ago
You kid, but like damn why bust your ass making pizza if you can't even enjoy a damn donut.
by Anonymous4 months ago
Wrong... the restaurant industry's profits have gone up after covid when prices for goods went down but prices for restaurant food stayed high and continues to do so it's an ugly industry secret that nobody's willing to talk about because they're profiting from it.
by Anonymous4 months ago
This is not unpopular. I agree with you
by Signal-Session4 months ago
This might be the least unpopular opinion I've ever seen here. Maybe OP surrounds himself solely with billionaires.

How is this unpopular?
by Anonymous4 months ago
I get my pizza at Costco. Good stuff for buck fity.
by Anonymous4 months ago
Where is it a buck fifty?
by Anonymous4 months ago
Okay, you got me, it's a buck ninty nine. I got it confused for a hotdog, also just as tasty and cheap.
by Anonymous4 months ago
I can't stand the costco pizza man, just can't do it. Wish I could it's so cheap and I drop off cars at costco for my job often. Normally get a chicken bake or hotdog. It's a great way to start the day!
by Anonymous4 months ago
Boooooooo, Costco pizza is a steal for it's level of quality
by Anonymous4 months ago
Enjoy it, while I enjoy real pizza for which I don't mind paying much more
by Anonymous4 months ago
Thanks, will do.
by Anonymous4 months ago
Ask yourself how are they're able to make it so cheap, because they use cheap ingredients
by Anonymous4 months ago
So do most pizza chains bro
by Anonymous4 months ago
Even the meat they sell is garbage. It's one grade above dog meat. Ive never had such crap meat before. I say the place is a large chain dollar store that you pay a membership for.
by Anonymous4 months ago
I get in arguments with people often about Costco meat. 1. Blade tenderized. 2. The butches cut every piece into a triangle. I rather pay more for a steak that can be cooked evenly and has steak texture than save 20% and not enjoy what is still expensive for a cook myself meal.
by No-Recipe46804 months ago
Same reason all the other food is cheap. They make it up elsewhere. It's just a tactic to get people in there
by Anonymous4 months ago
Sure but other places make it really fresh, Costco is not.
by Anonymous4 months ago
Well that wasn't really your argument before was it. You changed it up
by Anonymous4 months ago
I love costco pizza. I'm not saying it's the best pizza available but for whatever reason I think it's so good. I would rather have costco pizza than most chain pizza places such as pizza hut. And some small local places are really bad/disappointing especially for the price. <3 costco. And it's pizza
by Anonymous4 months ago
Yes, we all love costco food you uncultured swine
by Necessary_Seesaw_6244 months ago
I agree with you 100%. Their dough is bland (not fermented long enough), their sauce is mediocre, and they try to make for it by adding massive amounts of low grade, greasy mozzarella cheese. It is definitely not high quality neopolitan pizza, that's for sure.
by josiahhickle4 months ago
Dave portnoy gave it a 1.9/10 lmao
by Ok_Procedure4 months ago
Agreed. I can't believe how much pizza prices have ballooned since covid. The ingredient prices haven't gone up THAT much. I just got my own pizza oven. Only issue is finding a good pepperoni.
by West_Situation4 months ago
I've been making pizza for about 10 years. 00 flour used to be 23sh for 55lbs, it's currently 43$. Pepps were around 8$ for 5lbs, currently 23$. 5lb SanMarsano cans were around 3$ now 8-11. Cheese was around 1$ now around 2.70. Now if you want to talk about a buff chicken pizza? boneless skinless thighs were around .50-.70, now closer to $2lb. So even for me where I buy in bulk from Restaurant Depot. It has gotten a lot more expensive.
by Visual-Fishing4 months ago
Bc of manufactured "shortages"
by No-Recipe46804 months ago
I bought a pizza oven and I psyched myself out about actually using it. "If I use it the resell price will go down!" It sat in my yard for a year before it was sold.
by Anonymous4 months ago
Sounds like a good investment.
by Anonymous4 months ago
They are so crazy in Australia that I can't afford them, well never did, like 20$each from pitza hut, just standard, add 20 for delivery
by AdSwimming73034 months ago
They are in Australia, so Australian dollars, so like 10 bucks US.
by AlpsUnited4 months ago
Market Basket, Brother. Put the order in, do your ships, pick up the pizza. No cooking in grocery day. Giant pizza and it's 11 dollars.
by Greenclarabelle4 months ago
Buying a higher quality frozen on sale is the way to go.
by hferry4 months ago
Buy the dough/sauce and make the pizza yourself if you can't make it from scratch. Still drops it to under $10/pizza at most places.
by Anonymous4 months ago
I've started making my own at home, a ball of dough, a bag of cheese and some pepperoni all in about 12 bucks max. Obviously not the same but it scratches the itch
by Anonymous4 months ago
The second I see a typical large pizza be more than $15 I'm out. If I'm in the mood for good pizza I'll make it. If I just want something basic to shove in my face I'll go to dominos.
by Anonymous4 months ago
$35 for an xl with cheese pepperoni and mushrooms at the local spot by me. I'm all for supporting local but that's ridiculous.
by Overall_Elephant4 months ago
I was paying $20 for a regular plain pizza decades ago, where are you finding a $15 pizza that isn't awful?
by hettie714 months ago
I feel like people that haven't been in small towns don't get that. $20 typically gets you a lot of food at a ma and pa kind of place in a small town. If it didn't, they'd get no business.
by Anonymous4 months ago
Decades ago? Maybe if you are in a high cost of living area. The local place I like is about $20-25 for their large specialty pizzas which are pretty unique and great. For a more standard pizza $15-20 seems about right. Some places nearby are definitely more around $20 for standard and $30 for specialty though
by PsychologicalDust4 months ago
Dominos. A win for the cheap shirt option.
by Laverne084 months ago
Damn just had a 17$ 10inch pizza yesterday and yes i did find it quite expensive
by Lilliemarks4 months ago
15? A large pizza here (California but still) at any local spot is easily 30
by fschmidt4 months ago
$15 for a large pizza even years ago is going to get you some really crappy pizza
by yprice4 months ago
Yeah, the prices have gotten ridiculous and I can't really justify paying for it to be delivered anymore. If I really need to satisfy my taste for pizza I just go to Sam's Club. It's not amazing but it's hard to beat paying $2.50 for a slice the size of 2-3 regular slices and a 30 oz soft drink.
by Anonymous4 months ago
Husband and I make our own pizza and wings now. It's cheaper and we know everything is fresh. Started doing it this summer when our local place raised prices and lowered quality.
by Anonymous4 months ago
Real places make their own sauce and dough. That takes time and time is money.
by BasisFast4 months ago
It does not take $30 worth of time and moeny. Making your own dough and sauce is EXPECTED from a non-chain.
by Cortezmcglynn4 months ago
$30 includes labour, materials and profit.
by BasisFast4 months ago
Reading involves seeing, thinking, and understanding.
by Cortezmcglynn4 months ago
has there been inflation on time too damn
by Ready_Replacement4 months ago
A Margherita pizza can still be found under 6 euros if you are familiar with the Italian territory.
by Anonymous4 months ago
Pizza is still crazy good here in Kansas. I agree it's expensive, but the euro food-jerk is always so funny to me.
by Anonymous4 months ago
Your wages are definitely higher than ours and so is your purchasing power. You even pay less taxes.

Europe... where it's already collapsed a few times and is never far from another collapse. šš We have family that lives in Greece and Belgium. Not really envious. Nice to visit though.
by Anonymous4 months ago
Hahah Greece and Belgium..Naming those two countrys says a lot about your knowledge about Europe.
by Anonymous4 months ago
A decent meal for 2 runs $40+, a good size pizza will leave 2 stuffed. And while $4 for a donut is high, we have a chain that stays packed with donuts at $5.50. And don't even get me started on Starbucks.
by Big_Presentation98254 months ago
America values quantity over quality. Who cares what it's made of. The goal is to be "stuffed"
by Cortezmcglynn4 months ago

Lg specialty pizza from Round Table - $50+, Local donut shop - $6 a piece, Marin Co CA
by reginaldstrosin4 months ago
Yep, I paid $50 for the same order at Pizza Guys here in Sac Co.
by Even-Confection-54854 months ago
I have a theory based on observations and discussions with folks in the industry that prices are so high now because they're all following a rule of thumb that they should sell a pizza for a multiple of the ingredient price. So if the ingredients cost them $2 before and they'd charge $10 (5x), now the ingredients are $6 and they charge $30 (5x). I see this as a combination of "not understanding economics" and simple greed. Luckily you can still get 6 pizza meals for $14 right down the street at Domino's.
by Anonymous4 months ago
The multiples of ingredients sounds plausible. But rent is likely a major part of it too.
by Anonymous4 months ago
At Mom & Pop shops, yeah. It's pretty expensive to eat there these days. As for chains, I still find that you can get pretty good deals.
by Anonymous4 months ago
Let me fix the title: The price of pizza at Round Table has gotten out of hand. I can get cheap pizza anywhere else that's just as good or better, yet this dump still charges $30 for a medium cheese pie. Gtfo.
by Anonymous4 months ago
Well, here in Germany half that price would be considered expensive. It's easy to just buy one for less than 10 bucks. Idk if it's like that in bigger cities too though.
by Anonymous4 months ago
Agreed. A couple of months ago, I wanted to order a pizza from Dominos, but I didn't want any of their specials, so I started to build my own. The total was going to be $50 for one pizza and a side dish! We didn't get pizza that night and went somewhere else instead.
by Anonymous4 months ago
Those Eggs aren't cheap, I wonder what happened?
by Perfect_Reindeer4 months ago
Pizza is supposed to be cheap. This will never change.
by Loycewintheiser4 months ago
The price of everything is more, not just pizza you neckbeard.
by Thompsonleon4 months ago
I buy a large for $7. Y'all getting fleeced, lol
by Anonymous4 months ago
In my country you want to order an elaborated pizza for 2 (like not just margherita), you easily reach 50$ (with delivery fees and stuff). It became so expensive that I bought a 200$ gas oven and made it profitable in less than 6 months, cooking pizzas that are tastier than the great majority of restaurants of a city (except that 2 restaurants where they use wood fire and real ingredients and real cooks, but they become rarer with time... and so expensive that flying to Italy, eat a pizza there and come back would be less expensive). I just followed some recipes from youtube pizzaiolos channels. It takes a bit time to do them, but the price of a single pizza is at least correct, and you are 100% sure it will be an excellent and tasty pizza. It took me paying one time too much 50$ for pizzas with plastic cheese that were lukewarm that I didn't even wanted to actually eat because for the disappointment lol
by Anonymous4 months ago
I live in a small town. That order would be minimum $30 without delivery or tip here.
by eldredkoepp4 months ago
everything the price of everything
by Anonymous4 months ago
Yep. Papa Johns NY style pizza ordered well done has become my choice. $12 XL.
by ConcentrateFull38784 months ago
No one is forcing anyone to buy it if you think it's not worth it or just too expensive. Plenty of the public obviously think otherwise.
by Anonymous4 months ago
Costco. 10$. Done.
by Anonymous4 months ago
I decided to try the gluten free pizza from Dominos and it was a SMALL pizza with just cheese and pepperoni and it was 18 bucks. I never eat pizza, but that was shocking to me. I assumed it was the gluten free crust making me reconsider my life choices (I'm allergic to wheat, sadly).
by Anonymous4 months ago
Good frozen pizza and add fresh mozz half way through cooking. Definitely not the same as from a pizzeria but 1/3 the price and still pretty good.
by carmellakris4 months ago
The country is crumbling, pizza will be the last of your concerns soon.
by Bricehilll4 months ago
Yeah $25-30 here with tax in NM, so I've been slumming on Papa John'sā¦
by Anonymous4 months ago
Yeah the small businesses that pay rising wages and rent and food ingredients are greedy. The margins on food are historically so high. lol you're so ignorant, just make your own pizza then.
by Puzzleheaded_Past1014 months ago
I have never encountered those prices in NE, where the hell are you shopping lmao
by Gleichnermckenz4 months ago
This is not unpopular, this is actually true.
by Anonymous4 months ago
Make your own. It runs about $4.
by Anonymous4 months ago
Saying that food prices are increasing seems to be a popular opinion at the moment
by Anonymous4 months ago
Much cheaper to just make your own pizza. This is how I cope with the ridiculous prices.
by Naive_Equipment39494 months ago
Take out isn't worth it anymore. Ever since rebounding from covid my experiences have been a drop in quality across the board. Not to mention the price hikes.
by WarIntrepid4 months ago
It takes a bit of practice and some minimal investment in some kitchen tools, but learning to make homemade pizza is worth it. It can be as inexpensive or fancy as you want it to be and just takes a bit of preparation getting the dough to ferment slowly in the fridge long enough ahead of time.
by Luellagreenfeld4 months ago
I'm from the north east and a slice of plain pizza is usually $2.25-2.50 still. When I lived in Denver last year, not many places sell slices, but the ones that do were charging $6 for a slice of shiddy pizza.
by rogahngeovany4 months ago
The Ooni inventors are pulling some serious strings to get you to give in and buy their product š
by Anonymous4 months ago
If it serves 3+ people I just rationalize it still being much cheaper than buying 3+ entrees at any sit-down restaurant these days.
by Darius684 months ago
Sounds like you should learn how to make pizza at home, it's not hard.
by hugh894 months ago
Domino's is 8 bucks for a medium.
by Anonymous4 months ago
Anyone who's tried NiMarcos knows it's worth it no matter what lol
by evaruecker4 months ago
As long as you keep paying that price, they're going to keep charging that price.
by Anonymous4 months ago
Are you just looking at the price of pizza in a vacuum, or relative to your other takeout options? Because a good large pizza for $30 is still a significantly better value than a good burger and fries for $15. Which is what good burgers cost now.
by Walterisidro4 months ago
Go make a pizza yourself at home and then ask yourself if it's truly greed.
by Jean904 months ago
We have costco here, and the 9.99 18" pizza is the best for the price.
by wintheiserjanel4 months ago
I used to think that it was crazy that people would pay $30+ for a pizza without any coupons back when I was working at a Papa John's, I'd hate to see how much those same exact pizzas cost to order now.
by Far_Coffee4 months ago
The #1 pizza in all of Atlanta, Glide Pizza, is $28 for a massive 20" pie. I think that's a super fair price and it's about as NY-slice authentic as you can get. Anything pricier than that and I'm suspect.
by mattie464 months ago
Just go to Costco
by MinimumExpert61664 months ago
Oh geez really what a surprise

Papa Murphy's
by Anonymous4 months ago
The price of all food, man. An order of wings is like $18 bucks, and it's never even a full dozen anymore. Places only sell them in 10 piece orders. That's almost $2 a wing. It's ridiculous.
by Anonymous4 months ago
Pizza is overrated so you're probably right.
by zhermann4 months ago
Don't buy it. You can live without pizza and donuts made by someone else.
by lilyanleuschke4 months ago

If you're agreeing with this, you're assuming there is some conspiracy among thousands of small business owners to inflate profits dramatically. That isn't how economics work in a market that is totally dispersed like this one. Restaurants are holding on for dear life.
