+56 Theo Von isn't that funny, amirite?

by Anonymous 3 months ago

He's got a few really solid jokes, but I think the problem is rehearsal. He's not a "rehearsed, polished" type of funny. He's a "stream of consciousness" funny.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

I think his nerves get to him when filming specials which makes him over-perform too

by dakotabeahan 3 months ago

"Are you nervous?" -Katt Williams "About this interview?!" -Theo πŸ˜‚

by wehnerpaul 3 months ago

Agreed. He is not very funny, not a skilled comedian (roughly 47% better than Joe Rogan). His appeal is being a real dude, and while I don't follow him, he seems true to that.

by Fluffy_Rice 3 months ago

He is funny on podcasts but sucks at stand up tbh. I saw him live and his opening were funnier imo

by hegmannjosianne 3 months ago

He's best stand up was ironically when he was high in shrooms in like 2016

by Life_Sir 3 months ago

Makes sense I think he just can't write but when he's just being himself he's so funny

by hegmannjosianne 3 months ago

I normally don't care for his standup but he came into the comedy store one time and made me laugh harder than I maybe ever have. I must have been in the right headspace.

by Existing-Park 3 months ago

Saw him live and he seemed drunk or something because half the time he could barely keep the pace going. Lots of LONG awkward pauses where he would just ramble on about nothing really. Seemed like he kept forgetting his routine and just paced around nervously trying to remember. It was bad. I almost felt sorry for him. Mostly felt annoyed that he was a headliner and absolutely bombed. Oh well. Can't be on your A game all the time I guess.

" Let's see what else? .....

by New-Acanthaceae 3 months ago

He's always on something

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Yup, definitely the kind of comedy that's made for clips rather than the stage. I saw him live last year and started getting a little bored halfway through

by zane24 3 months ago

This is a thing in comedy. Being a funny person does not always equate to being a funny stand-up and being a funny stand-up onstage doesn't always mean they are funny outside of that realm.

by Many-Meat 3 months ago

"the skin on your nuts , damn cmon. That's a nice material" "If I had a couple of damn ball-skin loafers to put my feet in" - my first experience with Theo Von.

by HeftySignal 3 months ago

like how could somebody hate him😭 he's just so unapologetically HIM

by Nakiatorphy 3 months ago

Authenticity is everything

by Anonymous 3 months ago

If I really need to get it out, I'll write it down ...

by Independent-Luck 3 months ago

Honestly his stand ups aren't great. He just has a unique way of speaking and making jokes on the fly.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

I feel the same way about Bill Burr but his stand up is definitely better. But he's certainly way funnier when he's just riffing and it's almost entirely because of the way they speak

by Anonymous 3 months ago

I agree w you OP. I was having a chat w a buddy about this recently and I explained that the bulk of his stuff isn't funny to me because it doesn't seem outlandish to me. I've lived a colorful life to this point and the absurdity aspect of his stuff is lost on me. I can't hold others to that standard because their lives haven't been as colorful. I'm grateful I've had the experience that I have. It just makes me seem like a salty hipster when I say the guy isn't funny to me. Folks wanna suggest I'm bent cause he gets paid for it and I don't. No, I don't wanna be famous lol. I just don't find his stories, delivery, absurdity, etc to be interesting because it doesn't seem absurd to me.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

This is exactly how I feel and you just put it perfectly into words

by Kathrynstehr 3 months ago

I saw a few youtube shorts with him discussing random things. He was interesting but I didn't realize he was supposed to be funny.

by Mother_Minute8123 3 months ago

He's like that cousin that you have a laugh and a beer with at family gatherings, but he's not the funniest guy in the room. Probably the best one to sneak away for a smoke with though.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

I'm not saying it's rage bait, Its just insane how predictable it is, the second somebody reaches a certain level, the "this person was actually never good" opinions start trickling in. It's the cycle of celebrity

by Warm_Ad 3 months ago

Like Fonzi, everyone jumps the shark eventually. Except maybe Pacino and De Niro.

by Micheal31 3 months ago

Theo is more of a sound bite kinda guy. When you hear 30 sec to 1 minute quips of his he's damn hilarious, but it can be a chore to listen to a 2 hour podcast waiting for those weird anecdotes he comes up with. His stand up isn't very good. And if anything he's even funnier on other people's podcasts vs his own

by Anonymous 3 months ago

He just had the youngest self made billionaire ever on it was a good episode. Which 2 hour pods do you feel like aren't chores to you?

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Yeah this doesn't seem "unpopular"…more like the consensus.

by pfefferarthur 3 months ago

To be fair he didn't really "become a popular comedian" as much as he was on all those early day real world shows or whatever, found his shtick and never let it go, and was grandfathered in. He's a personality but these days everyone gets a special.

by RevolutionaryWeb 3 months ago

Sometimes I laugh at his childlike ignorance and goofiness, but I don't feel like his politics and worldview are anywhere near mine. I agree, he isn't that funny.

by Micheal31 3 months ago

I'm with you, dude just isn't funny. His podcast would be better if someone else hosted it. He constantly drags his own show down while his guests break their backs trying to carry him.

by florenceokeefe 3 months ago

Who's funny to you?

by Anonymous 3 months ago

MAGA rarely is funny

by ProductCommercial153 3 months ago

Kill Tony and the hundreds of comedians that show up there would like a word

by Anonymous 3 months ago

This is fair, he really is only funny in the right context. But at his best he is one of the funniest I've ever seen.

by Nice_Huckleberry 3 months ago

He's been very weird lately

by jaidenorn 3 months ago

To me he's always come across more as a podcast guy than a comedian

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Omg an entertainer supporting Trump? Well, I never! clutches pearls

by mittie88 3 months ago

I don't have any pearls to clutch lend me yours 😭😭😭

by Next-Ad331 3 months ago

So what? Publicize away. I love that he's a Trump supporter.

by Next-Ad331 3 months ago

You'll be shocked to learn this, but trump isn't very popular in certain circles lol

by Queasy_Put 3 months ago

Just another of the joe rogan one-note clingers on hitting in the comedy boom. In 5 years so many of these "comedians" will be a distant memory because they are not actually talented standups. Theo has some funny moments with his random goofiness, but it's just the same thing over and over. The one thing people kind of gravitate towards him for is the sobriety thing.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Same with Rogan (pre MAGA, I don't watch anymore) and all his folks. Lots of these guys are entertaining when you pass the time at home, but then you realize a chappelle or chris rock and those dudes are just real deal comedians.

by Capital-Egg-7298 3 months ago

Was saying this to my fiance the other day. He's only "funny" because of his accent. Remove the accent and have him do the same material and it's horrible.

by Pitiful_Low 3 months ago

That analogy actually makes a lot of sense

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Might be a situation where you have to seem him live. I didn't like his stand up at all, and then he was a surprise guest for another comic I was seeing. Nearly peed my pants I was laughing so hard πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

by Anonymous 3 months ago

He's not a standup comedian, he's perfected podcasts though

by Brilliant_Agency 3 months ago

He definitely excels more at casual rhetoric, stand up might be too formal for him. He's funny, but not really in a stand up comic style or format.

by kirlinrachael 3 months ago

Dude works best with someone to bounce off

by Solid_Radish 3 months ago

Cool dude, good at podcast, have social skills, and I think he is funny but more like a funny person and not like a comedian.

by hilma15 3 months ago

True!

by Glass-Rise 3 months ago

I've never seen any of his standup other than the shroom set. He's simply not popular for his standup. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ he makes me laugh because I watch his funny stuff, I guess.

by Shot_Debate 3 months ago

I think he's hilarious when he's just a guy talking but his stand up never made me laugh

by Anonymous 3 months ago

lots of comedians are just good podcasters. I think Whoopi said something like the greatest threat to comedy isn't cancel culture its just not being funny. too many comedians have forgotten to be funny but podcasts do sell tickets and they want to hang out with their parasocial buds they listen to every week.

by Lelah61 3 months ago

Everyone thinks this bub try to be more original

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Him and the whole Joe Rogan coalition is absolutely garbage at stand up

by Medhurstolin 3 months ago

Must suck not having a sense of humor

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Well that's pretty rude. Good thing that no one cares about what you have to say

by Anonymous 3 months ago

I agree that his standup is nothing special. What makes Theo funny is his random stories and quick answers to questions. He does so much better when he has someone to bounce off

by Spiritual-Blood 3 months ago

People think that guy is funny?

by Anonymous 3 months ago

His stand up specials are rough, but his podcast banter is really funny.

by Available_Suit_8142 3 months ago

Who?

by schinnerglen 3 months ago

His standup is okay. His podcast is hilarious and he seems like a genuinely good dude trying to get to know his guests

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Yeah he's a very funny dude, but he's not a good comic. On the other hand there are people like Ricky Gervais who are great comics but aren't actually naturally funny as far as I can tell

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Seth Rogen > Theo Von

by Capital-Wheel6572 3 months ago

He's sentient methamphetamine

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Terrible opinion.

by Downtown-Giraffe 3 months ago

Rogansphere hack.

by edgreenfelder 3 months ago

You enjoy his podcast but he has never made you laugh? That's like his main appeal? Almost every sentence is almost goofy even when he's serious lol

by Ill_Cup522 3 months ago

I don't know there's something about him that makes him unfunny to me

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Agree, same with Joe Rogan

by Catherinehyatt 3 months ago

yeah he and i think u should leave guy just fall flat for me its literally just HAHA BRO XD comedy

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Tim Robinson and Theo Von is no comparison

by Key-Airport-6487 3 months ago

i understand they have different jokes or whatever but they have a similar audience ngl

by Anonymous 3 months ago

You're literally being irrational lmao

by Logical_Judge_4745 3 months ago

course

by Anonymous 3 months ago

> It baffles me how this guy became such a popular comedian. because he's funny

by Dangelopfanners 3 months ago

He's really funny in conversation and his jokes are unbelievably spontaneous and clever. He's a true artist. I don't think his standup is good. He just doesn't do well in that format.

by ProfessionalHabit 3 months ago

He's funny because he's down to earth and naturally witty. He appears to be some backwoods hick but also is incredibly smart when he needs to be. That doesn't translate well to traditional standup really.

by Pristine-Cucumber182 3 months ago

He's only funny if you can relate to growing up poor. Outing ya self

by Anonymous 3 months ago

I'm trying to achieve facilitating a discussion about an unpopular opinion I have
