+45 Bob Dylan's music sucks, amirite?

by Anonymous 3 months ago

He's written way too many excellent songs, even if he sold every one to other artists to record, to say his music sucks. Also hires the excellent musicians, changes arrangements over the years, and hasn't stayed with one style or another or relied on his hits from one decade or the next or the next or the next.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

That´s the cool thing about Bob! He changes a lot so if people like rock instead of folk they need to jump a couple of records till "Highway 61 Revisited". Like Prince and Bowie, Bob changed a lot during his projects.

by Altruistic_Drive 3 months ago

He's a great writer. Not necessarily someone who makes good music imo

by ansel31 3 months ago

Has he? I never listen to music of this era but I could name dozens of songs from his contemporaries like the Beatles, but I couldn't name a single Bob Dylan song if I were forced to.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Like a Rolling Stone, Rainy Day Women (Everybody Must Get Stoned), Blowing in the Wind? I get it, I couldn't name a single Beyonce song, afa super famous music.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Tangled up in Blue, The Time's They Are A-changin', All Along the Watchtower ...

by labadiemelvin 3 months ago

I've never heard any of these. TBF, like I said I don't go out of my way to listen to music from this era, I just know what influenced bands and artists that I grew up listening to and I've never heard anyone say they were influenced by Bob Dylan.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Can you name some of the bands and artists you listen to? Just curious

by Fun_Cardiologist_368 3 months ago

What are you expecting here, you're not even having a conversation lmao I haven't heard of this thing so how could it important. If it were I'd have heard of it -random person consuming random media randomly

by Anonymous 3 months ago

I couldn't name a single Bob Dylan song if I were forced to That's really on you then

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Yeah, or maybe his music isn't influential? He made a small blip in the 60s and now nobody listens to references his music in any way?

by Anonymous 3 months ago

This is an unimaginably clueless thing to say. First of all, his own work extends far beyond the 60s; arguably his greatest album came in 1975, and the 90s in particular also saw some of his best work. Second, his music has influenced countless artists, including many that you listen to. He has shaped your own musical world whether you know it or not. Few American songwriters have been as influential as him. The fact that you are ignorant of that influence doesn't mean that it's not there.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Sure, that's a theory. It's completely divorced from reality, but it's a theory.

by labadiemelvin 3 months ago

Wow. Bob Dylan not being influential is an all time bad music take.

by Fine_Television_7843 3 months ago

I never listen to music of this era but I could name dozens of songs from his contemporaries like the Beatles, but I couldn't name a single Bob Dylan song if I were forced to. I am 60 and familiar with a lot of Bob Dylan songs, but I couldn't name a single Taylor Swift song if I were forced to.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

It's one thing to not personally like it, but saying "it sounds like music that was made by a child with no talent" is just silly.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

I didn't mean to be offensive. I actually think that is exactly what it sounds like to me. The lyrics are pretty good though.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Sorry about your ear.

by jameykoch 3 months ago

Some of his songs are pretty hard to play and sing at the same time, he's a good guitar player and song writer. He does not suck by any means.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

There is no child that could write something that sounds anything like the beautiful album Blood on the Tracks. If you dont like it that's ok, but like the other person said... its silly to say it sounds like its made by a child. You're not offending, you just sound silly. Maybe you've only listened to a few of his more simple songs?

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Beautiful? It sounds like pretentious crap for white peopoe

by Davissarah 3 months ago

It sounds like crap. Ftfy

by Metzcynthia 3 months ago

For prentious white people

by Davissarah 3 months ago

Ok. I found it beautiful on the first listen and I know many other definitely not pretentious people (non music nerds like myself) that have as well. If someone asks where to start with Dylan I would usually recommend that album because it has a fairly consistent soft and pretty sound except for a couple of songs. But thanks for your opinion

by Anonymous 3 months ago

I hate his voice honestly

by Gorczanyjeremie 3 months ago

How can you not admire how he's trolled the world for decades with his voice and that he truly just doesn't care what anyone thinks about him

by Anonymous 3 months ago

His songs are great, when other people sing them

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Knocking on Heavens door is my favorite Guns and Roses song

by ziemecharlene 3 months ago

Lol this mug

by NeedleworkerJaded206 3 months ago

So you've only heard a handful of songs then?

by Anonymous 3 months ago

It's okay to not understand something

by Obvious_Trade 3 months ago

I'm with you. Always felt this and I'm a child of the 70's. Never understood the draw.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

In his younger folk music days his voice wasn't nearly as bad as it later became. Though it was never great. When he was young he was able to use his voice in a way that fit his music wonderfully. Watch "Hey Mr. Tambourine Man" on Youtube. There is a live recording of a performance he did, and it sounds great IMO. Dylan is not "a child with no talent." He is the greatest songwriter of all time. That title really isn't in dispute.

by Mollie77 3 months ago

Yes, it is.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Agreed. Everyone knows it's Neal Peart. đŸ˜‰

by Practical_Reward 3 months ago

Name another songwriter with a Nobel Prize in Literature. Not only did Dylan write many incredible songs, he influenced virtually every writer of lyrics from that point forward. He is the reason people write songs about meaningful stuff. He is the one who made that practice popular.

by Mollie77 3 months ago

I don't need to watch another Dylan song. It's only going to confirm ops stance. Boring.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

I mean, that is for sure up for debate. I honestly don't know many people personally who listen to his music, much less call him the greatest songwriter. I'm 26 so I'm sure that factors in haha. But he's certainly is an immense talent and is greatly influential

by Icy_Crow_5520 3 months ago

It just dawned on me but I think Bob Dylan is much like Kendrick Lamar. He doesn't sound the best but the real talent is in the song writing.

by No_Database 3 months ago

Nah man, dylan made some great music.

by Repulsive_Ninja 3 months ago

I'm kinda with you. Quite possibly the most overrated artist of all time.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

I only like Dylan song if the Dead is playing them

by Anonymous 3 months ago

I don't think he has a particularly great voice (I've seen him live so I am a fan) but his lyrics and the music are what make him a talented musician to me. And I feel his cultural impact is massive.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Luckily for you, Dylan is one of the most covered artists ever, so you can find any of his songs performed by other artists with arrangements that more suit your tastes.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

His songs are not bad but he has a terrible voice

by Entire-Pen 3 months ago

I have never heard this name before tbh

by Careful-Ad4827 3 months ago

Don't think twice it's alright

by NeedleworkerJaded206 3 months ago

He's a musical genius, but his vocal talent is limited. Basically, anyone famous who covers him is better than the original. But the original had to come first. See the Byrds' cover version of "Mr. Tambourine Man" and Jimi Hendrix's version of "All Along the Watchtower".

by Sure_Transition_693 3 months ago

Somebody doesn't understand lyric and composition.

by Recent-Weakness 3 months ago

Went to see him at Willie Nelson's music festival in Chicago last year, people were booing him because he was so bad. Kind of felt bad, but he was honestly awful

by Affectionate-Load592 3 months ago

3 whole instruments? "3" whole instruments? That's 2 more than 2.

by Turbulent-Office 3 months ago

Another cool thing about him is that he stole the act that made him famous. Look up Ramblin Jack Elliot.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

He wasn't that bad until he got into drugs. There's a special tv show that honored him and they brought him out to sing and he was wasted He was so bad the other performers were wincing when he sang. And this was back in the 90s.

by Dry-Berry-6750 3 months ago

Which is why Bob Dylan won the Nobel Prize for literature, his lyrics are poetry set to music.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

You're in good company if you don't like his voice--he doesn't like it either! And I totally agree with you about the harmonica.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Indeed.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Whatever dude

by FamiliarCondition 3 months ago

I think being the only musician with a Nobel Prize for Literature kind shows that his music is about more than just the music itself. He crafts stories with his lyrics and his music just touches your soul on a level that no other artist does in my opinion.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

If only you can get through the singing and guitar playing you mean?

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Get through? I love his guitar playing. His voice isn't the best, but I've always just really liked it. My mom played his music for me as a baby, so I just grew up loving his music.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

making a movie about him wasn't worth it id say.. he is alright but not the best singer

by Anonymous 3 months ago

He's one of the most influential musicians of all time, whether you like him or not. Of course they're going to make a movie about him

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Yes, all the songs. Not unpopular.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

The first cassette tape I ever bought was in the 90's, and it was Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits. I had heard Rolling Stone and liked it, and figured this legend had one banger after another. Anyway, I hated it.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

His voice is definitely annoying to listen to.

by Schillerfreddie 3 months ago

Bob Dylan is a lesser version of most of the musicians he's tried to emulate.

by Weak-Analysis4685 3 months ago

It's ok to be wrong

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Agreed, he sucks.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Amazing song writer. Horrible singer.

by zorapfannerstil 3 months ago

His music sucks but selling your soul to the devil is what makes him suck as a human.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

His songwriting is unmatched. His actual performances can certainly be matched. But it is great songwriting that's rare, not great performances.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Not an unpopular opinion

by Anonymous 3 months ago

I kind of agree a little.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Yea he sucks, we all know why he's propped up by the establishment

by Anonymous 3 months ago

I love his music when it's performed by others… I just can't get past the voice, but to say there's no talent there is kind of silly.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

He's a troubadour singing protest songs. It's not supposed to sound traditionally "good." That style of music had a different utility besides just being entertainment or aesthetically pleasing. Anyway, this take is usually held by people who just recently discovered Dylan and are hearing his most famous songs. He's got plenty of more traditionally structured/sung songs.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

completely agree. He plays the harmonica as if he just picked it up for the first time.
