+57 There's nothing inherently wrong, rude, impolite and frowned upon with eating while walking in Japan, amirite?

by Bogisichamparo 4 months ago

What part of any of this constitutes an unpopular opinion?

by Individual-Break 4 months ago

That's a clickbait title, the Japanese problem will not beat other people to death in the streets.

by Bogisichamparo 4 months ago

Just sounds cultural. There are totally normal things in lots of countries that are strange, rude, and immoral in others.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Maybe ask Japanese about it.

by faymaggio 4 months ago

I know almost nothing about Japan or this cultural rule, but my guess is it's like almost every other cultural rule everywhere: some people take it super seriously, some people ignore it, and most people quietly abide it because that's the flow of the world. In general though, if you're going to a country and are told "these are the rules for this place, please respect them", then being like "but I saw someone there break the rule!" is pretty lame

by kovaceklaurence 4 months ago

Does cultural rule change all the time?

by Bogisichamparo 4 months ago

Yes, culture is constantly changing. But, as a foreigner and visitor, the appropriate role is one of quiet respect and following traditions, not being a part of the changing culture. For example: if you went to visit a mosque in the Middle East, you might be told it's respectful to take your shoes off. If you saw a Middle Eastern person with shoes on in there, would you put yours back on and say "this is clearly a changing cultural rule that I can push back against"?

by kovaceklaurence 4 months ago

Did the attackers also utilize the benches and public seating? There is just no where to sit.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Last year I visited Switzerland and the benches were PLENTIFUL. The bench supply in Japan is downright pitiful. I can understand why a fast paced society designed for everyday efficiency doesn't have benches. But as an American, I still miss being able to sit

by Anonymous 4 months ago

So you're telling us what is and isn't rude in Japan solely based on what you saw some people doing in the background of Japan videos?

by Anonymous 4 months ago

You keep using those words. I do not think they mean what you think they mean.

by ystiedemann 4 months ago

It means that when I'm trying to make a point, he's attacking me rather than just engaging of the argument itself.

????

by Ebertleonora 4 months ago

Lol you went to watch 4k videos as your source. Japanese are extremely judgmental of foreigners and even other Japanese. If you eat outside while walking you'll be judged. Whether you care or not is up to you.

by Larsonkatrina 4 months ago

Like did it REALLY practically happened? You know judgemental is not the right thing to do.

by Bogisichamparo 4 months ago

We should not tolerate judgemental mindset and being racist.

by Bogisichamparo 4 months ago

Because it's unethical to do that, everywhere in the world.

by Bogisichamparo 4 months ago

It's not black and white, there are still many American customs that we consider rude that people violate everyday. I wouldn't say eating while walking is frowned upon per se, it's more discouraged especially with tourists because they don't want litter. There aren't many public trash cans, so it's normal to eat outside of a kobini and dispose of your trash there, then to walk around and have nowhere to put your litter. When I lived there, I carried a plastic bag in my backpack for any trash I had that I could later dispose of at home. I think you're just vastly overthinking this.

by Ill-Acanthisitta9124 4 months ago

That's because I've seen a lot of websites written by foreigners in regards to eating while walking in Japan saying that it's rude, impolite and frowned upon.

by Bogisichamparo 4 months ago

Too many questions.

by LiteratureAnnual 4 months ago

It's not moral, they just think it's bad for your digestion. It is a real thing though, not a huge insulting cultural violation but I have lived here for 10 years and really have no memory of any Japanese person ever eating while walking down a regular everyday street. At festivals is fine; drinking while walking is fine; finding somewhere to stand under a roof and eat your food from the convenience store while standing still is fine. But it's really true that eating while walking down a regular street is just not done. I don't know where you got videos of people doing it.

by vkozey 4 months ago

How about an Ice cream, it is also design for you to eat while walking.

by Bogisichamparo 4 months ago

You do realize that judging and receiving looks from people is uncomfortable right?

by Bogisichamparo 4 months ago

You do realize that a foreigner coming to your country, one that has existed in isolation for most of its existence, and violating your social norms is uncomfortable, right?

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Shouldn't your opinion be based on being Japanese or at least from being in Japan? I see people walk and eat in Japan less than in other countries, but it's not really something people seem to care about.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

This is not something people outside of Japan think about enough for any position on it to be popular or unpopular.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Of course it's not inherently rude. What's rude and what isn't is highly contextual. If Japanese people think walking and eating is stupid and gross and rude, it is, to them and over there. And there are Japanese habits we'd consider quite rude and offensive if a Japanese person did them in the US. Just learn the cultural norms of the place you're living and try to abide by them. Or if you can't or won't, don't complain about the consequences.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Well on the other hand there are Japanese people who think eating while walking is not stupid, gross and rude.

by Bogisichamparo 4 months ago

Yes, it is considered rude. Seeing some Japanese people doing it doesn't mean it isn't rude, just that some Japanese people are also rude! Food is seen as something to be fully enjoyed, and walking would distract you from appreciating what you are eating, so it is seen as showing no respect to food. Another reason is cleanliness, if you are walking round while eating, when you are finished you will have rubbish. You might pocket it, but if you're travelling there is a chance it could be dropped accidently, making the streets dirty and showing disrespect to others by not caring about keeping the area clean. If you eat snack foods outside the shop you bought it from as intended, the store will have trash cans there to throw away your waste. There are some places where it is more acceptable to eat while walking. Places like Disneyland have it seen as acceptable, and also some street food markets will have it more acceptable to walk and eat because the areas will have a lot more trash cans than public streets. For my evidence, my family is Japanese on my wifes side and I've talked about it with them before, also the first time i went to Japan i was a smoker and smoking on a street (before japan made it a fineable offence to smoke on most streets) and i dropped some ash from my cig on the floor and a japanese man told me off and went and got a nearby hose to wash away the tiny amount of ash that I dropped. Japanese people care about the area around them and want it to be clean, so if you are a tourist over there, then yeah, don't eat while walking and respect the place and people you are visiting.

by Important_Sorbet 4 months ago

Even when you're standing still, there is still a chance where you accidentally drop your rubbish.

by Bogisichamparo 4 months ago

Sigh It's just that we are in a globalised where cultural practices and ettiqutes are universal means that they're found in all countries. Globalization has been there for years now. Sorry.

by Bogisichamparo 4 months ago

If you are not careful with the food you're eating while walking, that'll make the country less beautiful. So let's try to be careful.

by Bogisichamparo 4 months ago

If it's rude, then it's rude in all countries, because for examples in Australia, I sometimes don't see people eating while walking.

by Bogisichamparo 4 months ago

They have signs in many area explicitly prohibiting walking and eating.
