+30 Marriage is stupid. amirite?

by Anonymous 4 months ago

You wanted to say that WEDDING PARTY is stupid not marriage

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Honestly, a kickback is a much better alternative; much cheaper, more laid back, and good vibes

by willparker 4 months ago

Exactly, a marriage is like 100 bucks in the clerk office I believe. It is not expensive at all.

"And besides, it's also just a bunch of religion mumbo jumbo." You know Atheists get married all the time right?

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Married atheist here, I have even performed 6 weddings as an officiant. Marriage has absolutely helped clear up intangible problems like parental rights, property ownership, etc. Sure we could have formed a trust and gotten most of those advantages too but being able to take care of my partner on case of medical problems is beyond the scope of a trust

by Anonymous 4 months ago

That's what a health care proxy is for. Even if you are married, you have to prove that you are, so even married couples should have a health care proxy. It's the easier path for being able to make medical decisions for your partner.

by Alizemoen 4 months ago

This depends on the country , the whole world is not the USA. In Italy for example, only relatives by blood or law are considered as proxy. Starting from the spouse, then children and parents and so on.

It's just wild how completely ignorant some of these opinions are. Just wild. Like man, look beyond your own world.

Youre confusing marriage with a wedding party for most of this

by Goyettederrick 4 months ago

You're confusing weddings with marriage. Marriage is like 20 bucks to file the paperwork. Tax benefits, insurance benefits, better lending options, medical power of attorney, inheritance rights, social security benefits, custody benefits.

by Comfortable-Ask 4 months ago

You're very stupidly shaking marriage and wedding together. What a dumb opinion.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Marriage costs about $200 so it's not expensive you're broke

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Completely free where I live! Sure I could have paid a fortune to a lawyer to replicate all that but... I am not an idiot!

by Valuable-Mixture-822 4 months ago

"an expensive proclamation of being together" ---- I think you mean a wedding? Marriage is entirely a different thing than a wedding. "And for what, some tax benefits" - um no. Mostly I want my husband to be able to make decisions for me, if I'm incapacitated and also so he can have health insurance. And I want him to get everything if I die. And we don't have to testify against eachother in court if push ever comes to shove. I'm also fine with calling a marriage a marriage if we are living our most committed lives with each other.

by brakusberry 4 months ago

You know you can go to the courthouse for less than $50 bucks

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Being single is better IMO but IM happy for others that do.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Its a mix of a traditional display of commitment but also protection from a legal and civil standpoint. Even if you believe it is just religion mumbo jumbo and an expensive waste to show you are together, it also gives you a legal standpoint that you and your partner are a thing for life in official documents to protect you from being split apart so there is verymuch practical reasons to get married. The big expensive wedding is optional.

Counterpoint: I love my lil pookie bear

by mmarvin 4 months ago

There are no tax benefits. Those are only for married couples where one person doesn't work.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

That's the party not the wedding wedding don't cost that much

by Anonymous 4 months ago

A dumb personal opinion that's not even remotely original. Nice.

by Beautiful-Life 4 months ago

I know in Canada if you live together for a certain amount of time or meet certain criteria you are considered in a common law marriage and get all the tax benefits of married couple without the cost of a wedding. I think marriage is more for a religious ceremony because the younger generation wants to make their older religious relatives happy as alot of religious people look at sex outside of marriage or living together as sin.

by evelynbailey 4 months ago

Good for you. I'm happy with my marriage (2 atheists), have no tax benefits other than sharing a home, and did not pay a ridiculous amount for our wedding that was completely worth it because we celebrated our love with our friends.

Incel alert.

Yeah tbh. The idea of spending the rest of your life and making a family with a complete stranger is kind of odd. But every society throughout the world does it. It's strange.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

I mean it's not a complete stranger. That's the whole point of dating- to make sure you know someone.

by Boganbartholome 4 months ago

True, but it's still someone who isn't related to you

by Anonymous 4 months ago

So you should do it with someone related to you?

by Wehnerserena 4 months ago

That would make more logical sense, but our society doesn't see it that way

by Anonymous 4 months ago

That is....possibly the most unhinged take I read today. And considering the world we I've in rn...that's saying something!

by Valuable-Mixture-822 4 months ago

I mean, I'd hope not

by Boganbartholome 4 months ago

Do you know how you were made?

by Anonymous 4 months ago

idk if you've ever dated anyone before but they don't stay a complete stranger

by Anonymous 4 months ago

I completely agree I don't need a piece of paper to be in a long term loving relationship but maybe one day for the fun of it
