Fashion is the death of style.

by jacobsgiovanny 3 months ago

Yeah, totally. Fashion trends take away individuality when it comes to choosing clothes. It's not cool if everyone is wearing the same thing. I'll admit, not everyone has the best styling sense, but if you love a certain style and you think you look good in it. Even if others think it's bad—wear it with confidence. At least you're not just another sheep following the herd.

It all depends on how you wear it - you can take a trendy piece and incorporate it in a way that's truly unique. It's not the trends taking away creativity, it's that people don't feel need to express themselves outside of just wearing them. It's not the clothes, it's the people. Similarity of dress used to be an easy way to know if someone was of like mind. I know I judged a book by its cover as a kid wore a specific t shirt of a band I liked and I approached him to be friends, as I have done many times with other people during that time and had done onto me. They always turned out to be good people with great taste in music! Plus being apart of the herd is comforting to some. Not everyone needs to be a shining star. Looking down on how people express themselves is a jerk move IMHO and is an opinion that doesn't matter to anyone but you. You can let the shining star be themselves - why can you let the sheep?

Yeah, I have no problem with incorporating trends into your style—it's kind of like wearing a watch that matches your outfit. The issue I see with trends today is that everyone is wearing the exact same thing, just in different colors. I get that people want to fit in and that it gives them a sense of comfort. That's why this is a opinion. You don't have to stand out or be a shining just too dress differently. But I do think clothing is a reflection of your identity. What you wear should express who you are, and when everyone looks the same, there's not much individuality left.

That might be true, but why is death of style a bad thing?

I'm 18, so I'm at the age where trends matter the most to people my age and younger. I'm completely against trends, but not old-school fashion or style. What I find ridiculous is how regular clothes suddenly get a massive price hike just because they become trendy. I get that trends play a role in culture, but to me, they're mostly a waste of time and money. The most important thing is staying true to yourself. If your personal style happens to align with a trend, that's fine—but at the end of the day, people should wear what they genuinely like and feel good in, not just what's popular just to fit in.

With me, my personal style came from trends when I was going up. My "style" (if you can call it that) is kind of a mix of goth, skater, and gangster (I can't explain it). But each item comes from trends when I was growing up.

I'll admit, some trends do bring in interesting clothing, but most of them are just downright weird. I still wear some older, outdated trends today, but only if they fit my style. The problem is that trends can make shopping for clothes frustrating. There was a brand I used to wear where shirts cost around $5, but when it became trendy, the price shot up to $15—and even now, after the trend died out, the price never went back down and that's what I hate the most about these trends.

This used to be far more extreme. Everything is in play today. You could wear skinny or flare and nobody's going to say anything. In the entire decade of the 70s if you didn't wear flares people might make fun of you.

Wear whatever pants make you happy dude

Absolutely! Confidence is the best style—wearing whatever makes me feel good!

Trends go back to the beginning of "fashion". So I'm not sure why you're just noticing the trends of "our culture today"? Is it the rate of how trends change that you're noticing speeding up? Such as trends last about 3-6 months (micro trends) that are common now versus mid-20th century trends that was every 10 years

I guess you might be right about that. Trends have been around for a long time, but the difference I'm noticing now is that everyone is wearing the exact same thing, just in different colors. Back in the day, trends existed, but people incorporated them into their own unique styles, wearing them in different ways that reflected their individuality.
