+49 Encores are the worst part of a concert. amirite?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I think that the artist might have to pee.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

That's what Fat Mike said when I saw NOFX last year 🤣

by Cordie49 1 month ago

This, and also I've always found encores funny and witty

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I don't mind it because it gives me a heads up that the show is about to end, but I get one more song to enjoy before it's over, like a last chance to savour the experience. And they usually save a pretty good song, too.

by Wiegandnestor 1 month ago

Most pop stars do encores now. In fact, I think every show I have ever been to had an encore.

by Maxine90 1 month ago

Yeah...and it's been this way for a long time. I don't know how long ago it was where they are actually a surprise...

by Spencergregory 1 month ago

they used to need be earned. for real.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

agreed. when they save their most popular song for the end of the encore, it's very obviously planned. obnoxious. play the favouritest songs in your main set, save some cool extras for the encore.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I actually agree, so many shows have this amazing momentum that builds up to the last song, and then all the energy changes when they leave and come back, and it's tough to build up that momentum again for just one song. It would be better if they just finished strong and ended it there

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I think it depends on how long the break is. More than 5 minutes would be too long imo. No reason the band can't take a leak, drink some water and whatever in about 5.

Best concert I've ever been to was Tool Fear Innoculum. I wouldn't even call it a concert. It was an immersive experience. Everything was so intentional, start to finish. When it was intermission they didn't say a thing, just threw up a timer and left the stage. When it was over, it was over. And it was complete. An encore would have totally ruined the art and flow of it. The experience was so elevated from any other concert that it made me dislike things about other concerts, tbh. They ruined me.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Yup you sound like a Tool fan.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Sounds like a Tool fan for sure... But he ain't wrong Their concerts really are several steps above anything else I've ever seen, and I've been to hundreds of concerts Tripping acid at a tool show is a spiritual experience

by london46 1 month ago

Yup, saw them for the first time tripping in 2022 and it all finally made sense

I know I do

Tool sucks horse cock.

Tool is amazing.

This is the most Larry-David-esque take I've seen in here in a while. And I totally agree.

by Warm_Weird8502 1 month ago

This is not the first time I've been told I'm Larry David-esque haha

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Believe me it's a compliment coming from me. 😆

by Warm_Weird8502 1 month ago

I like the ones that are more laid back than the main show. Like the main show is a super tight scripted event, and then the encore is like the after party. A bit more laid back, some more talking with the audience, and playing some deeper cuts.

by CarefulTransition360 1 month ago

Actually do agree. The last few shows I've been to didn't do encores, and I think the flow of the show was better for it.

by Hot-Note1595 1 month ago

This actually sounds like a good encore because it sounds like it happened so organically.

Have you ever been to a classical music concert? If not, you would explode there. After the end, musician or conductor will come back from the backstage and bow, then leave and come back if cheering continues, sometimes even 3 times and then, if schedule allows, he will play the bis.

by Longjumping-Owl-2172 1 month ago

Idk, I also don't really care for the encore thing but at more than one show, the cheering was meh so they didn't come out to play more. So I cheer to get them back out.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

ask an older person about encores. they used to serve purposes and were not a charade. sorry you missed that era, when rock was a verb.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Real encores are great, though. I saw The Casualties and the crowd literally wouldn't leave until they played more. I'm sure if they didn't come back on stage, there was going to be a riot. It was one of the best shows I've ever been to.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

In the early eighties all big rock bands did encores. But, the wait was longer and the cheering was more intense. Yes they were planned, but the felt more sincere. Could be because the band, the crowd and I were all much younger in those days.

by felipe80 1 month ago

100% agree

by Parkerjovany 1 month ago

I've only seen it done well once, at a Wallows concert. They came out for encore and took an audience request and said that the song we requested was one they haven't played live for a few months

by Key_Transition_5860 1 month ago

The last gig I went to everyone was screaming for an encore and one more song. The band did come back out and played I don't even remember how many more songs. I enjoyed it but was thinking "man, I've been here since the doors opened, standing the whole time in fkn skate shoes, it's after midnight now and I want to go to bed"

by Anonymous 1 month ago

For the most part it makes everybody go home happy because they got their "one more song"

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Every concert I've been to outside the US has no encores. I prefer that.

by Hungry_Active_1501 1 month ago

I've started saying "I can't believe I fell for that!" When encores start.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I think the Dandy Warhols agree with you. They did the whole encore thing when I saw them back in 2014, but they didn't when I saw them last year.

by mannpearl 1 month ago

Once I went to a Weird Al concert. When it "ended," they didn't leave the stage -- they just went into a corner, where you could still see them. They acted like they were just chatting amongst themselves, checking their phones, etc. Then, after a couple minutes, they were like "Okay, time to get back to it" and they walked back to their instruments and played a couple more songs.

by Solon12 1 month ago

Weird Al gets a pass because he's Weird Al

by Anonymous 1 month ago

The best part is yelling encore after the first song, then booing when the band says "we're not done yet".

by Anonymous 1 month ago

But that's not how it goes is it.

by austyn25 1 month ago

I hate the fake done with the concert

by Aromatic-Car1622 1 month ago

I think the fans should have to do a proper cheer for a planned encore otherwise it doesn't happen. I've been to multiple concerts and people give up after 3 chants. Sit in silence and bam, the encore that was going to happen all along happens regardless.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

yep this was once the way. it was a chance to build and channel audience emotion and coax more music. it was meaningful for band and crowd. it was a collective and joyful obligation. this is not that world anymore. sad.
