Buying Physical Copies of Books Is a Waste of Money, amirite?
by Anonymous5 days ago
Not everyone wants to stare at a screen to read a book. Maybe they wanna read it while camping or something

Why do you assume they are reading in the dark? Have you tried reading from a tablet in the sun?

I find trying to read a tablet in the sun to be an eye strain and a battery killer To each their own.

A Kindle or other dedicated ebook readers use a form of ink that can be reconfigured on a screen, it has no inherent source of light. It needs light to be read exactly like a book

People literally buy meth, let people enjoy their hardcover books

It has a different tactile feel, you can read, reference and process the information differently when it's a physical book, you can more easily tag, highlight, or annotate (if you're into that sort of thing) and you can use the physical book to stabilize a wobbly table.

Reading on a shiny screen sucks and hurts your eyes. Paper like E readers are temporary bits of technology in where you can lose your entire library in seconds, but your home could flood and you'd most likely be able to save your physical library.

Paper like E readers are temporary bits of technology in where you can lose your entire library in seconds you can also lose your entire physical library in seconds, too. your point?

its not as easy, unless you have a lot of gasoline. if you want to strain your eyes with unnatural blue light be my guest but don't act like its more durable than physical copy books.

If you're buying ebooks, it all exists in the cloud. If you're pirating ebooks, it all exists in the cloud. Yeah you might lose the kindle itself, but it's infinitely easier to stuff that in a bag than gather up the hundreds of books during a flood.

clouds and the entire internet is fragile, and can all be gone one day. physical media, specifically books can be preserved for thousands of years.

Don't trust that online sources will always be there

You are right to an extent, but to a lot of people it's just a collecting hobby just like any other, and the same argument could be made for those. An argument can also be made that if something provides entertainment to you, it's not a waste. Not everything has to be "worth it" on paper.

Yep, most things except for food, housing and medicine are "a waste of money" if we ignore the fact it makes people happy

A physical book will never run out of battery.

I want to read a physical book. Not a tiny screen. No blue light. No having to charge anything. The physical print on a page is much easier on my eyes. My girlfriends and I give our books to each other. The used book store in our town does hopping business. Everyone in town is there selling and buying each other's books. I love it.

Majority of books I buy re study related that I need to study again and again. Now in case of novel or story books that you'd read once or twice, I still prefer hard cover books as I can't really focus much on-screen book for long time. Meanwhile physical books gives comfort and calmness.

The daily "Spending money on X hobby/activity is a waste of money because I don't enjoy it" People spend money on X because it gives them happiness OP what do you waste money on? I waste my money on cars and other stuff Reading and actual book is just nice

Sorry, i totally agree you. As someone whose childhood dream was to have his own library room in his house, i have been using e-readers since 2011 with e-ink (not tablet), didnt buy any physical book since. Difference between e-ink screens and lcd tablet screens is huge. Nothing can give u the comfort of reading a very light e-reader.

Reference books serve a purpose. Books you reread serve a purpose and are a nice memento. Buying a non-reference book to read for the first time, I agree. Libraries exist for that.

I regret all the money I spent on physical books, 3-4 moves later and I have basically like 10 of them in storage somewhere. If I had spent just 10% on that on ebooks I'd still have them. Just not practical for me.
