The gameplay isn't anything to write home about, honestly, but it's the story and voice acting that do all the heavy lifting. That, IMO, is why it's so heralded.

That game was made into two movies, and they are working on a second season of the TV show, I agree that it wasn't an amazing game. But it was pretty good and definitely struck a chord with many people.

Saying it has nonexistent gameplay is just wrong and not an opinion... you may not like it's gameplay, but it definitely has it, and can be quite complex and fun, especially in Part 2.
