+42 Buying clothes from a thrift store and then reselling them online for a higher price is incredibly scummy, amirite?

by Imogenetillman 1 month ago

This is not unpopular. Many agree with this

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Yep. I see this all the time with Lululemon brands. I see and hear them at the thrift store going specifically for that brand.

by Interesting_Story275 1 month ago

It's not exactly "totally fine" but it's not like they buy everything. Just random name brand stuff that's actually worth reselling. Unless you're also saying people who shop at thrift stores NEED name brand, fancy clothing too?

by Hahnmonserrat 1 month ago

I'm so tired of the people that sit in thrift stores waiting for employees to bring items out just to be the first to grab them. Just so they can resell it online.

by Rosenbaumfay 1 month ago

It might be different in different countries, but just speaking about Australia where im from our thrift stores are charities, as in the money they earn goes to fund things like homelessness or suicide hotlines etc. In Australia, over 200,000 tonnes of clothing are discarded annually, mostly ending up in landfill. Resellers keep clothes in circulation instead of trash. There is absolutely no shortage of second hand clothes. If a reseller spends $1,000 on stock, that's $1,000 directly funding a charity.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Exactly. If any other person than a reseller purchased these clothes, the charity would receive the same amount of money.

by brandystoltenbe 1 month ago

On one hand, yes. On the other hand, I just want as many clothes to be actually used and not go in the landfill or sit in a warehouse in a foreign country for all eternity.

by Alexane79 1 month ago

There are more clothing/item donations than thrift stores can ever possibly hope to process and sell. Literal mountains of perfectly good clothing ends up in landfills. If resellers seem to get "all the good stuff" it's because 1. They spend more time searching, and 2. They have extensive knowledge about clothing and can spot things that other people would overlook. Also consider that most people don't have time to go thrifting. They should much rather pay $20 for a nice preworn shirt online, than $40 for fast fashion shirt in a store. So it's a win-win.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Exactly, hundreds of people would pass over something on the rack but a reseller could style it a certain way and it would sell easily to people with that specific style online, where it would have ended sitting on the rack for months and then in the bin without someone seeing the potential. Not to mention all the money spent at charity shops goes to charity. people getting mad at (mostly low income people like single moms etc who do this for money) sourcing their stock by donating to charity, producing 0 waste to the environment, oh what a terrible crime - but then turning a blind eye to fast fashion corporations selling things made from slave labour, its quite frankly ridiculous to me.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

There's absolutely zero difference in buying anything from anywhere else in the entire world and trying to sell it for more money.

by Isabelbarton 1 month ago

Except the shops are called goodwill for a reason

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Still would call that scummy so not sure what point you're trying to make 🤷‍♂️

by Advanced_Catch 1 month ago

Ironically, since goodwill started an online shop, there have been stories of people buying something in the store and then being denied because that wasn't meant to be put out it was supposed to go on their website for a mich higher price.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

There is some irony here BUT goodwill at least has to pay for overhead and labor

by Anonymous 1 month ago

99% of people use a thrift store as a dump for their old stuff they're not donating out of the kindness of their hearts

by Anonymous 1 month ago

There is no shortage of clothing in thrift stores.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

They received that stuff for free and put a price tag on it. Then someone pays that and sells it for more. Unless a person is buying an isle, who cares? People are trying to survive out there.

by Resident_Brilliant42 1 month ago

This is only an Unpopular Opinion on Twitter

by Anonymous 1 month ago

When you buy something you do whatever you want with it And when you need money, you need money. It's not like you're stealing. You're just reselling.

by Affectionate_Toe 1 month ago

I'm surprised that anyone takes time to care about this

by Anonymous 1 month ago

As someone who buys 99% of my clothes at thrift stores, I have no problem finding cute cheap clothes. The store is making money, the individual is making money, people who buy from them are happy. The only people who are not happy are people who make up problems.

by RevolutionarySwim920 1 month ago

Consumerism might actually be helping people out at this point, considering the fact that a $50 jacket isn't actually nicer or more durable than a $350 jacket. That being said, you missed out on the worst part about this practice: rich people are the only people who can afford to loot-camp thrift stores. The poorest never stood a chance.

by buckridgebrenna 1 month ago

Opinions everyone agrees with masquerading as UO's are incredibly scummy.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Maybe they need money too.

by AfterAnimator 1 month ago

The one person who resells that I know, lives in a $3million dollar house. I kid you not.

by MousseBest7208 1 month ago

What if a person with low income does this to supplement their income? This is a very blanket short sighted opinion.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

You could make that argument about anything.

by halvorsoneliane 1 month ago

This is why I have such a hard time feeling any type of way about resellers, especially being a sneaker head. On one hand, they're out hustling and making a living for themself which should be respectable. However, on the other hand they're taking away products that someone else would really like to have and making them jump through hoops for it. Kinda like car salesmen, why do they actually exist in 2025? They're just taking something and making you pay more for it while making the process harder. But they are just people out making a living the way they know how.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Car salesmen exists because in the US cars can only be legally sold through a dealership. Remove the law and overnight half of car dealerships close.

by halvorsoneliane 1 month ago

I honestly didn't even know that was a thing, seems ridiculous. How is Tesla able to get away with direct purchases?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Perhaps OP would prefer that such a person turns to crime instead? Or starves?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

if its legal, its fine.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

not really, no. trump is doing illegal things.

by Any_Exchange341 1 month ago

How do you know that the middle man doesn't need the $$$ too though? I'm sure they are only taking name brand stuff there's still plenty of clothes out there! Not like they are taking all of it or even close to that. At least not where I live.

by Emienicolas 1 month ago

Is the motivation to donate to Goodwill for a large portion of donors an act of kindness or is it simply to relieve themselves of no longer wanted/needed stuff using GW as a discard pile? Your premise is faulty. Sure. There are some who intentionally donate naively believing the CEO of that business is largely a charitable one. That said, I do agree if someone in poverty is deprived of much needed clothing or household goods at a significantly reduced price, due to exploitation by resellers, then that outcome is heartbreaking. Often, though, resellers are looking for items that have more resale value; and, as they say here in France: "the impoverished aren't looking to buy those items." (We have Emmaüs)

This isn't remotely unpopular
