+29 Work socials feel like forced overtime, amirite?

I'm literally in upper management and not one time have I ever attended a work social, networking event - nothing. Just don't go.

Ohhh no im an outcast around people I don't want to hang out with. How terrible. /s

My coworkers aren't dicks and help even if you don't attend stupid social events after work.

I'm sorry I can't go to your unpaid hangout with coworkers, my kids got a thing I can't miss and oh hey look at the time, bye!

Just go to any park on a nice sunny day, most of the kids there can be lured into your large windowless van with a bit of candy. (do not do this)

I hate them even when they're built into work hours. I often find a reason not to go. "Oh no, I have a meeting that just popped up."

I sometimes miss the days when I was in my 20s and people would go out to happy hour. I get not wanting to go because you're feeling "forced," but before you know it, you'll be older, or farther away, or with more responsibilities, or whatever and you can't partake. There will be plenty of time to go home and relax.

I 100% agree. And quite often they are used to discuss work things as well

I didn't go to my works Christmas party this year; it was fine and my boss still handed me a card with a bonus in it except on my scheduled workday instead of a Hibachi Lunch with 30 people I didn't want to attend

Not a fan either. I'll show up for a few minutes to be seen then bug out.

100% yes. Especially for those people who live further away and have a long way home. I understand that they want people to enjoy a day out, and for larger teams to get a chance to all hang out, be face-to-face when they usually aren't, and so on. But when it's after work or on holidays, then... nah, I'm not going. That is MY time, and I have my own way of spending that time :-)

I am glad these are not common where I'm from, that would suck

Just show up, have a beer and show face. You don't have to actually work
