-34 Burritos outside of Mexico are better than burritos in Mexico, amirite?

by Anonymous 3 months ago

As a Mexican, I completely agree. In fact, there really are not a lot of burrito places in Mexico unless they are pandering to an American clientele. It really is more an American take on Mexican food, in fact, burritos are Texan, not Mexican.

by merl42 3 months ago

Chinese is the US is usually meat with a sweet sauce. Love me some here and there still, first time my wife (Chinese) had any was in college and she loves it ironically. It's not my favorites like stuff in Taiwan but it can be a comfort food.

by estefaniablock 3 months ago

Yeah I learned about this in the documentary "In Search of General Tso". Great movie

by Sufficient-Rest-4076 3 months ago

As a Mexican, in my family, home made "Burritos" are literally just heating up leftovers and wrapping it in a flour tortilla And this is like anything, it's not limited to Mexican food lol

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Burritos are not Texan, just some of the ingredients in burritos make it more tex mex, but they still originated in northern Mexico.

by Character-Credit 3 months ago

Juarez specifically is where they generally get attributed. Is pretty close to Texas.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Flour tortillas weren't introduced until the 16th century, so a burrito is more like a Spainish version of a Native American food.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Burritos are absolutely a thing in northern Mexico and they're filled more like large tacos. The small child sized monstrosities are definitely American though. Mexico is not a monolith.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Ding ding ding People forget about lonchera burritos. Migrants braceros made them before crossing into the US for work.

by kilbackosvaldo 3 months ago

Pretty sure they're called Tex-Mex for a reason. I'm a white dude but I don't believe burritos are considered authentic Mexican food. Kinda like going to Italy and being like "the unlimited soupsaladnbreadsticks here suck!"

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Kinda like going to Italy and saying "man, the pizza sucks here. It's so thin. Where's the super-duper pepperoni, sausage, ham hock mega-combo supreme deep-dish pizza?!

by GasSerious3577 3 months ago

I think this crust is just stuffed with more crust???

by Anonymous 3 months ago

😆😆😆😆😆😆

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Tex-Mex and northern Mexican cuisine are very similar. IMHO the best Mexican food is further south, like in central or southern Mexico (where the tortillas are made of corn, not wheat).

by Alarming_Employ584 3 months ago

They're not a TexMex thing, CaliMex have burritos too

by BackgroundNail1752 3 months ago

Not surprising considering burritos aren't Mexican

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Not unpopular. In most places in Mexico I've visited they don't even serve burritos. Burritos are a very American version of Mexican food (tacos mainly). But I live in San Diego and we truly have the best burritos in the world hands down.

by Old_Dependent 3 months ago

Can confirm, even the local chains are like a solid 7-8/10

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Last burrito I got was the size of a small child. Took me several meals just to finish it. It was, however $16 - which made me sad. Oh and Chipotle sucks compared to the mom and pop taco shops in Southern California.

by Old_Dependent 3 months ago

I meant local chains (craving Cotijas right now) But 2 meals for $16 isn't bad

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Yeah I agree. Good thing the burritos have not gotten any smaller, just more expensive.

by Old_Dependent 3 months ago

For sure, imo Mexican food is the only justifiable fast food here anymore. Can usually do a burrito and asada fries to split for ~$20. That's like… not even 2 bigmac meals

by Anonymous 3 months ago

I was looking for the Cotijas mention!

by Anonymous 3 months ago

The pizza there sucks though. Actually almost all of California has awful pizza.

by FrequentPay 3 months ago

So you like Mission Burritos. Which were invented in San Francisco. (And just to let you know SF is not in Mexico)

by mohremma 3 months ago

Well it was part of Mexico until from like 1776 to 1848 to be fair

by Bertawaters 3 months ago

Yes exactly!!! Thank you for identifying the name.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

You seem very condescending and bitter. Dude is just talking about burritos

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Sure....for now. lol

by No_Bison_3934 3 months ago

I actually missed that part. I guess if I was Mexican I'd be a little annoyed ngl

by Anonymous 3 months ago

General Tso's chicken is from China/Taiwan.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Not in Mexico anymore...

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Right? First time I've ever seen someone begging for the cheap filler material lol

by Anonymous 3 months ago

The best burritos are bean and cheese. Burnt pig flesh is overrated.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Maybe if one is a lame ass dork.

by klingalicia 3 months ago

Did you just tell Mexicans to learn how to cook... Mexican?

by Jkrajcik 3 months ago

You do know a burrito isn't Mexican cuisine rt?

by Anonymous 3 months ago

An internet search highly disagrees.

by Jkrajcik 3 months ago

Having grown up in Mexico City I can confirm, burritos are NOT Mexican food…gasp, neither are Fajitas or gasp, nachos!

by Potential_Notice 3 months ago

Because burritos are not Mexican my dude. I suspect actual Mexican food, well beyond tacos btw, would shock you.

by Potential_Notice 3 months ago

Bro, look it up. I eat plenty of Mexican. You're just being dense at this point. If a Mexican created it...it's a Mexican dish, no? Simple as that.

by Jkrajcik 3 months ago

No, not simple as that. Have a good day (What was created in northern Mexico during the revolution were tacos using flour tortillas)

by Potential_Notice 3 months ago

Los burritos son de Sonora güey.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Los burritos son de San Francisco pendejo.

by Potential_Notice 3 months ago

El pendejo eres tú que no sale de su rancho. Seguro ni conoces el norte.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Ok…no conozco el norte. Eres un ignorante. Bye bye

by Potential_Notice 3 months ago

Having been to Mexico and living in a state with tons of Mexicans I disagree with you. They don't consider a burrito Mexican they primarily eat tacos, tortas and sopes.

by Schmittrussell 3 months ago

Just because they primarily eat that doesn't make a burrito not Mexican. Literally Google it. All results say Mexico. Doesn't make it a staple. Just makes it a general fact.

by Jkrajcik 3 months ago

This is an instance where Google is not as reliable as I don't know the actual source. The type of burrito op described was not designed in Mexico it was in San Francisco. It is what they consider Mexican also op literally picked the worst burrito place because it's not even similar to how the sf burrito most would describe as a Mexican burrito.

by Schmittrussell 3 months ago

So, op doesn't know food. That doesn't make me wrong in its alleged origin.

by Jkrajcik 3 months ago

Okay pal you do you. Hope you never get into this debate with an actual Mexican. Have a good day.

by Schmittrussell 3 months ago

Burritos are Mexican from northern Mexico (Sonora/Chihuahua area). There are Americanized versions of the burrito, but it's still Mexican. It would be like saying pizza isn't Italian, but American.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

True but the burrito op described is not like those burritos. They are more similar to sf style burrito. It's vastly different to the point they don't consider it the same. Like do Italians consider deep dish a pizza? I doubt they would. I see your point however thank you and have a good day

by Schmittrussell 3 months ago

Mexico is more than just Mexico city... in northern states, it's very common.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Spent almost 2 years there….dude sit this one out please.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Originating in Mexico and being a relevant part of Mexican cuisine are 2 different things. A very tiny portion of Mexico offers burritos and they're more like tacos.

by Earmstrong 3 months ago

Agreed to an extent. It's still Mexican by origin... tex mex before Texas was a thing if you want to get technical from what I've read. Again, it doesn't need to be a staple of the cuisine. The big ass things we eat now are not Mexican burritos. That we can agree on.

by Jkrajcik 3 months ago

The mission style burrito is an American invention after all, which is what Americans are trained to expect. Culturally, what you're describing just isn't Mexican.

by timmothy11 3 months ago

I'd say that culturally it is Mexican. It's a bunch of Mexican ingredients put together for the first time in San Francisco. Mexico burritos are simpler and have fewer ingredients.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

It's Mexican in the way that Chicago deep dish pizza is Italian.

by timmothy11 3 months ago

When I was in Tulum, we purposely got lost so that we could find a hole in the wall Mexican restaurant. I ordered a burrito. It came with beef, beans, cheese, purple cabbage, tomatoes, sour cream, and a green sauce. It was bomb. Not unlike the burritos here in Houston. I preferred the cabbage over lettuce, actually.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Burritos I can buy at 3am and not have to make myself are better than all other burritos. Burritos I make myself at 3am are a very distant second, and other burritos aren't worth talking about.

by Broad_Mix_5429 3 months ago

Catering to the US pallet.

by Reynoldhessel 3 months ago

I've been to Mexico many times. Burritos aren't really a thing. Tacos, yes, but most of what Americans think is Mexican food isn't Mexican food. Mexican food, especially seafood, is awesome.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

burritos are not mexican, jsut stick with tacos in mexico they are amazing

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Burritos aren't mexican dummy

by Anonymous 3 months ago

No rice. That a Chipotle invention

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Burritos were first sold in San Francisco. It was likely an adaptation of a common meal for field laborers in nearby agricultural regions. They would wrap their lunch in a tortilla so it was easily transported. But the first two taquerias to sell burritos were in the mission district. So, it is a decidedly American thing

by Tough_Badger 3 months ago

Lol burritos aren't Mexican

by Business_Chemical873 3 months ago

I've never had a burrito in Mexico. Usually tacos or steak or seafood

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Because burritos are Tex Mex, not actual Mexican food.

by Potential_Notice 3 months ago

I mean yea. Because burritos are American.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

I high key agree with OP. Maybe not Chipotle but where I live near Chicago all the Mexican food is amazing. And it absolutely crushed the Mexican food I had while vacationing in Mexico.

by OilComprehensive5215 3 months ago

Honestly I kinda agree. Me and my wife tried a lot of burritos during our Mexico trip. Honestly was kinda underwhelmed. I still found them decent but the wife literally said Chipotle was better.

by osinskiforest 3 months ago

Mexican food sucks, it's fattening, overly spicy, greasy and messy.
