I think it's hard to avoid hypocrisy in every area of your life. It's not a huge sin to not be able to live up to every moral you strive for IMO. If you just aren't able to live up to your own personal standards quietly, that's part of being human. What is a problem is when you are vocal about a value but are a hypocrite about it. When you treat someone like a terrible person but are doing it yourself. When you go out in public decrying something you are personally guilty of. That's when hypocrisy becomes a problem. What right do you have to judge someone else for something you are guilty of yourself?

To me a hypocrite isn't about failing to live up to our own ideals, everyone fails occasionally. Being a hypocrite is judging others by a moral standard that you don't hold yourself to. Having said that sometimes we can't help being a little hypocritical, but it's about balance and humility. A parent trying to teach their child the importance of dental hygiene because they don't want the child to deal with the same consequences of neglecting it that they did may feel hypocritical but it really isn't. Demanding to your rivals go to prison for things you openly do worse yourself is.

Eh. It depends on the context. When my coworkers ask how to do something, my typical reply is "I taught myself this and no one has corrected me otherwise. Soooo...maybe dont do it." But, if I tell someone they can't have fried foods anymore because it's bad for their health and then proceed to eat a chicken sandwich from of them...I'm just an asshole. I can have one probably but not right in front of the person. So that yes, would be wrong.

Hypocrisy is contradiction between 2 stated beliefs or principles . I don't define hypocrisy as beliefs not aligning with actions because it's impossible for them to always align

You probably believe in some things that you don't perfectly follow. That by itself is normal, and I don't think even qualifies as hypocricy. However, you probably don't reprimand and shame others for doing things that you also do. If you did, that would make you a hypocrite

The argument isnt that hypocrisy is impossible it is when someone acts holier than thou or imposes rules on someone they don't even follow. Like to have right wingers try to cry about free speech while they want to ban anything that might be contrary to their beliefs is hypocrisy. You can't tell me you're allowed to say whatever you want if you don't even agree others can say what they wan Same with left wingers who tell me how important it is to validate people's beliefs but the second you believe in something they don't agree with, it's a witch hunt.

Couldn't agree more. I feel like there are some limits, but mostly, yeah. I agree

Changing your mind on certain things doesn't mean you're a hypocrite. That's just an excuse to use when you want to be a hypocrite. Just be true to yourself.

All I'm hearing here is that you don't see a point to people having integrity

It's important to make a distinction here... Let's use the Christian example... A Christian who preaches that no human is without sin and even they aren't perfect isn't a hypocrite because they didn't follow the 10 commandments down to the very last detail. However, a person who says they are Christian and "would never break any of the 10 commandments" but then does so with knowledge of what they are doing is a hypocrite. Hypocrisy is a problem because it is rooted in deception. You aren't a hypocrite if you believe that people should try to be honest, but you lie sometimes and you admit that you are a liar who is trying to be honest.

If each individual lived a life of 100% integrity to their inner truth, there would be no suffering. Integrity with oneself may be the single most valuable and most suppressed attribute an individual can have. It is because integrity is denied, suppressed, rejected for fear of being ostracized from ones peers that an immense amount of unconscious suffering is caused. People never meet themselves because they live an entire life pouring energy into a false persona.

Being a hypocrite is often unavoidable throughout your life, and a largely normal part of societal interactions.... but it should still be recognized as a negative trait that can be improved on.

I think you misunderstand what hypocrisy is. Hypocrisy is not setting a standard and then failing to live up to it or living in some sort of cognitive dissonance. A hypocrite is someone who claims to uphold a moral virtue while also being the biggest offender in that area. It's the falsity that makes you a hypocrite, not simply failing to live up to your standards

I don't count eating pork and loving pigs as hypocrisy individual pigs you connect with is meaningless to ALL pigs
by SpecialistKind39572 months ago
Everyone is a hypocrite. It's just how it is. The question is to what extent do you accept that quality in yourself, and how hard do you work to suppress it?
by Terrible-Sector2 months ago
People have a set of core values that are constantly competing. Take the eating pork while loving pigs example. You have a core value for love, and another for sustainable and catering to your cravings. They are competing and in different situations one will win over the other

I legit have a rule. Never trust anyone who isn't a little bit of a hypocrite. Being a little bit of a hypocrite means you are a flexible thinker that is okay changing your stance. If someone lives their whole life and never changes their stance on anything ... that's sketchy to me. o.o
