This opinion is unpopular, because it's ill-informed. JLo was an actress before getting a singing career. The movie *Selena was released in 1997** (March), and it's often referred to as Jennifer Lopez's breakout role. Principal photography for the movie started in September 1996, and the real Selena died in March 1995.* JLo's first single wasn't until May 1999. The Billboard Latin Music Awards started in 1994, and Selena won two that year, Regional Mexican Artist of the Year and album. JLo did not win an artist or album award from the Billboard Latin Music Awards until 2008 (album: Como Ama Una Mujer). Her first win from that award ceremony was from a duet with M. Anthony in 2000. It's a cover of an Italian song. The second was the Spanish cover version of "Love Don't Cost A Thing".

Selena was a great singer and performer who was rising to fame quickly, she wasn't at all a mediocre singer struggling in obscurity like so many others
