+28 It's Totally Fine To Sniff Your Laundry Instead of Washing It, amirite?

by Anonymous 3 months ago

It's fine to wear something twice in a row. It's gross to put it back in your clean clothes.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

this is always my issue. t shirts, socks and underwear are one wear, pants button ups and sweaters get at least a few wears before washing, but none of them go back in the drawer, so they overflow on the chair in the bedroom.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Oh yes... the infamous chair. I know it.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

"The Chair" must be a hole in the market that's just begging to be filled. (That's what she said)

by Anonymous 3 months ago

There are multiple solutions already available. A clothes rack / hat rack to toss this weeks reusable items on. Hangars and space in your closet. A separate drawer space for in-use clothes.

by Eldred65 3 months ago

I already have a chair thanks

by Anonymous 3 months ago

See this person gets it. Gotta think outside the box man.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

haha, this seems to be a problem that everyone complains about.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Yes! We call ours the "Clearty pile"

by Anonymous 3 months ago

I call this my "In Be-clean" pile

by patrick08 3 months ago

Why do you think a tshirt is a one wear, but not a button up is not, they are worn on the same body part

by denesikmaurine 3 months ago

People often wear an undershirt under a buttondown

by Anonymous 3 months ago

because I wear a white undershirt under my button ups. if it's the middle of summer then I might raw dog it, and then it's a one wear situation.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

See, I'd say the opposite. I swear way more in dress clothes than in casual clothes. I find that dress shirts aren't made of as breathable fabrics as most tshirts are

by Anonymous 3 months ago

This. I have a special hanging place for already worn but not yet dirty clothes. I would never think of hanging them with freshly laundered clothes.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Same…kinda. But my "special hanging place" is usually just a pile 😭

by Open-Chest-5123 3 months ago

My dad used to face the worn-once ones in one direction on the hangers, and freshly washed ones faced in the other direction (and each category on opposite ends of the closet rod) Me, I have the chaotic chair pile 👌

by bettiekunde 3 months ago

Captain Fancypants oot here with button-up clothing 😹😛

by Anonymous 3 months ago

That's why you have a clean clothes drawer and a "I wore this once or twice" drawer

by FirmRelation9192 3 months ago

Who do you think you are to lay ground rules? OP makes a valid point about frivolity where your standards make no sense.

by One_Heat 3 months ago

It depends on the item. I don't generally wash trousers after one wear, same with sweaters if they don't touch my skin because I wear soemthing underneath. But t-shirts, socks, and underwear are definitely one-wear only for me

by Anonymous 3 months ago

The only time I rewear t shirts is if they're my sleep shirt/around the house shirt because then even if they do smell a little I don't care

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Agreed. Even though we are less sensitive to our own smell than others are, a cloth-to-nose smell is good enough test of whether it's still ok to wear or not.

by Maleficent_Try_7769 3 months ago

Agreed. If you can't smell it by putting your face inside the pants, they don't smell For slacks and elastic jeans that means usually 2-3 wears, but I've noticed raw denim (so long as it's aired out between wears) can go almost indefinitely unless you're doing something active since they have some mild antimicrobial tendencies. It's very rare I have to wash my nice work/date night jeans

by Leschlessie 3 months ago

I mean, that's just not true. Just because you can't smell, it doesn't mean other people can't Just because it doesn't have an odor doesn't mean it's dirty. BO is not the only thing that makes clothes dirty. By no means, do I put every article of clothing in the laundry after one use… But a smell test is absolutely not a definitive test

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Jeans are magical you can wear them and they never smell granted you arent supposed to machine wash them the same way but I agree I will wear most things at least twice if not more, sweats i wear in my home on the weekend will be fine to not get washed and worn next weekend same with the shirt if im not doing any work and getting sweaty work clothing is another matter as i sweat in it alot and it will get musky

by Anonymous 3 months ago

This only works on hoodies jackets and jeans. No way you should be sniffing last weeks boxers and going "ah I'll give this another run out"

by Anonymous 3 months ago

This is me with t-shirts. It may pass the sniff test after today's wear, but an hour into wearing it tomorrow, it's going to have wafts of BO/onion. I'll repurpose a shirt, so if it's like something I'll wear to run errands, I'll use it the next day when cleaning up the house or doing something outside etc. but no way I'm wearing a shirt to work on Tuesday, and throwing it back on Thursday and going back to work with it.

by trisha09 3 months ago

Exactlyyy this. A t shirt will fake you out and smell ok, you wear it outside and within 30 mins you smell like a public gym. S'why shirts go in the laundry immediately, for me at least

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Ssss ssss…. Hmmmmm Good enough for the girls I go out with, back on it goes.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Aye man if they dont have an issue with it neither do I🤣

by Anonymous 3 months ago

I don't see anything wrong with that, it's what separates boys from men!

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Anything that touches the smelly bits directly will smell. Socks, underwear, and T-shirt's always get one wear per wash. Sweaters, dress shirts, hoodies, etc. can get a reasonable pass of a few wears before washing, provided you wear an undershirt. Pants get washed when they're dirty, denim can go a week or more in most cases.

by Loud_Yak 3 months ago

Smell the crotch on jeans, especially if you're a woman or a man who doesn't wash his bits thoroughly

by Anonymous 3 months ago

put away? no no my guy. everybody knows you throw your dirty and bad smelling cloths in the corner, you pile the "thing you've only worn once" cloths on the chair, and you leave your clean cloths in the hamper, and throw it on the bed if you don't go through it all before your next laundry day.

by New_Debate 3 months ago

I have a system for this! Socks & underwear always go in the laundry after 1st wear. Pants and dresses get about 3 days or 1 day if I got dirty or was really active. Sweating always means wash. Simply put, not everything needs to get washed every time, especially items that are more delicate. This is a nuero divergent thing for some. And my man does it differently than me.

by mitchelllou 3 months ago

You severely underestimate how desensitized one becomes of their own odor.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

I think you and most people in general overestimate your own odor. OP is right. Washing your clothes after wearing them once is insanity. The only exception is underwear, but that's due to the proximity of waste producing genitals.

by bonita41 3 months ago

Op, you are constantly surrounded by your smell and so if you cant smell anything, it might just be that you sre used to the smell. Other people arent.

by Ambitious-Heat 3 months ago

Pants...sniff the crotch...if it's rewearable you will know. Shirts sniff the pits...same thing. One isn't so sensitized that you can't determine if you should wear it or toss it in the laundry.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Yeah, even though we are desensitized to our own smell, we can still smell if it smells good. That is, if it smells clean. If it smells bad or "meh", then you toss it or wear it at home amongst your smelly loved ones who are just as desentisized as you. Our own smell isn't necessarily bad, it just smells. The good smell of my loved ones is awesome. When they stink, I'll tell them

by Anonymous 3 months ago

😆

by Anonymous 3 months ago

I don't think this is an unpopular opinion, especially amongst men

by Anonymous 3 months ago

How else can know if something is dirty or clean?

by OutrageousPurpose 3 months ago

Don't forget that not washing clothes as often makes them last longer, too.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Gotta give it a visual also. Somethings can be dirty and not stink. Also, not back with the actual clean clothes.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

This isn't really unpopular.

by Estelcassin 3 months ago

You are used to your own smell. I've had friends who insisted that they didn't have body odor because they couldn't smell it; they were incorrect. It's the same with perfume, cologne, scented laundry soap, etc.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

It depends. Some things sure. But underwear? Tshirts worn when you've worked outside or were cooking or cleaning? Leggings? Stuff like this even if it doesn't smell likely has dirt on it. Dirt can degrade fabric.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Most dirt doesn't degrade anything as much as washing does, just FYI

by Anonymous 3 months ago

So can overwashing.

by No_Horse_7051 3 months ago

You're where germs come from.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

the earth is about to yeet our species not tryna smell like a hippie in the interim

by klingbud 3 months ago

You can get away with wearing a pair of pants twice because the lower body doesn't sweat as much

by Anonymous 3 months ago

A major tip people: Beat and air out your clothes. It will keep them good smelling for way longer and they don't degrade as much in the wash. Do the crotch and armpit test. If it smells anything other than clean, wear it at home until you smell bad. Then wash imediately

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Sniff test? You go front then back then flip it inside out and go front to back. It's called recycling.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

This is how I conserve toilet paper, so we are absolutely on the same page.

by No_Bar 3 months ago

You win this trophy for the most unpopular opinion! 🏆

by Anonymous 3 months ago

yeah i sniff it and if it smells like bo or has a stain i wash it. otherwise its ok to wear

by Anonymous 3 months ago

The issue I have with the sniff test is you're eventually nose blind to your own smell so it may not smell to you but smell to others.

by Dangerous_Taro 3 months ago

Just remember: if you can smell yourself a little, others can smell you a lot. Usually goes for body odor but it's also applicable for clothes.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Sniffing is ok. But you need to be wary. Sometimes a little sweat can make a 2nd day garment smell like hell, while a fresh one wouldn't be affected. I have been a victim of this more than once (e.g. running to catch a bus, or crawling under my desk at work to exchange a broken cable) and therefore don't really trust the sniffing test anymore for everything that I wear outside the house.

by Kindly_Travel 3 months ago

Depends on the item and what you were doing in said item. Walking around all day in your undies? Throw them in the hamper. Jeans you wore for a few hours? Those are fine to wear again. T shirt you wore to help a friend move some furniture? Toss it in the hamper. Not just the item, but the material of said item. Especially clothing that is making direct skin to skin contact in specific areas of your body. Armpits, feet, crotch, arse, etc. Do your damn laundry. Just because it doesn't smell, does not mean it's not dirty.

by Equivalent_Meeting84 3 months ago

If it gets dry cleaned it gets the sniff test. If it passes it does get hung up in the closet. T shirts get reworn to bed until they are too ripe or it is laundry day.

by CommitteeJust 3 months ago

Find a platonic friend (not a sexual partner or close biological family member). Sniff your clothes then have your friend sniff them. Upon completion of this experiment you will do a load of laundry.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

My former roommate has OCD and her constant laundry usage was driving me nuts! Like you can wear it more than once you know

by claudia02 3 months ago

There are other measurements of something being dirty other than having a detectable odor Also… You are never the best barometer for whether or not an item of your clothing has an odor. We are all less sensitive to our own body odor than anybody else. So it's perfectly plausible that you sniff something that you think is clean and everyone else is smelling your stank

by Anonymous 3 months ago

What, sniff it clean? I've practically done that with some undergarments.

by False_Rule 3 months ago

And how does your underwear smell after several days?

by Anonymous 3 months ago

There's a huge difference in underwear and a sweater. Just smell the crotch and armpits and you're good to go if it smells clean. Unless youspilled fish sauce or yoghurt or something on your pant leg

by Anonymous 3 months ago

The dreaded spilled fish sauce.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Yeah it smells like death of the sea and earth. But the worst thing I got on my clothes was a rotten egg, brown runny stuff. Cracking it thinking it was okay. Inconspicuous parts of the kitchen made me gag for weeks, until I cleaned every inch of it. I actually just tossed my then worn singlet in the bin. It's the worst particles I've ever gotten up my nose and I've smelled some nasty stuff through my life

by Anonymous 3 months ago

You become desensitized to your own smell pretty quickly. Socks, underwear, and most t-shirts should be one-time wear only. Some blouses, sweaters, and pants most of the time are usually okay to wear again. Bras should also be washed/changed more often than most women do. They can cause odors and rashes.

by Ok-Rough-2698 3 months ago

Wearing clothes multiple times before washing is great practice, but putting those clothes back in your closet is crazy. When I leave out clothes to wear again, I'll hang them up separated from the rest of my clothes Nose-blindness is real. Your nose isn't perfectly reliable, and you can actually have way more musk than you're inclined to believe from your sniff test You might miss small stains in the nooks and crannies of your clothes before hanging them back up, which will let them set and become permanent. If you're gonna wear clothes again, you gotta give each piece a once over before hanging them back up to make sure you're not missing any odorless stains and such

by Anonymous 3 months ago

You just know OP smells crazy

by Miserable_Fault_8653 3 months ago

We get it: You have awful hygiene.

by Lisa26 3 months ago

It depends on the article of clothing and material. I definitely only wash my denim like once a week if I manage not to spill anything on it lol. But everything else… yeah I gotta wash that.

by toneywhite 3 months ago

Idk of anyone who washes their jackets/hoodies/coats/etc every time they wear them

by Anonymous 3 months ago

You stinky

by Anonymous 3 months ago

For sure some items can worn more than once, but never put it back in the drawer.

by Anonymous 3 months ago

Have you ever heard of how since you're very used to your own odor you can't detect it? Other people sure can so don't complain when they say you smell bad.

by Anonymous 3 months ago
