+32 Wanting Disney characters to look the same as they did growing up is not wrong. amirite?

by Exact_Desk5902 1 month ago

I just don't care for live action remakes. Even if they got every detail the exact same. The classics are classics for a reason.

by Welchocie 1 month ago

I hated that they called the 3d Lion King remake a live action lol

by Puzzleheaded-Cake513 1 month ago

Speaking of, if Mufasa changed some names around and had an all black all human no CGI cast, I suspect that it would have had a response similar to Black Panther. It was a pretty decent movie in itself that I think was limited by the CGI.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Okay. That I see.

by Welchocie 1 month ago

If Maleficent counts as a remake that is the only good one.

by keyshawn01 1 month ago

The Alice in Wonderland and Jungle Book life action movies were pretty solid. It's how you execute the movies that counts. The Lion King remake had 0 soul and thus was god-awful.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Alice in wonderland is pretty good

by Sigurd13 1 month ago

Isn't that one an origin story? Tied to, but not a direct remake of Sleeping Beauty?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

You are correct. I wouldn't call Maleficent a live-action remake of Sleeping Beauty because it's not, it's a different aspect to the story that takes place in the same universe.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

There is charm and "magic" in animation that live-action just can't copy. Throw in as much CG as you want, no live action has come close to being as good as it's animated original.

by Feeneygrayce 1 month ago

It's simular with a lot of things thst movies from traditional animation to CGI. It loses something in translation. Similar to how something like Moana would lose something of you made it 2D instead.

by Welchocie 1 month ago

Live action cash grabs in general just feel soulless.

by Olsonantoinette 1 month ago

i think the best live action disney film i saw was lion king maybe. the first one.

by Exact_Desk5902 1 month ago

That was actually the only one I've refused to watch because the animated one was so close to my heart. I'll watch any of the other ones.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

It was garbage and it definitely wasn't live action, it's cgi crap

by Wisokyconner 1 month ago

I think that was was the most soulless one actually. It wasn't even live action so it doesn't even have an excuse, just pure cash grab. "What if we just do the exact same thing as the original lion king but this time the animals are less expressive and it's voiced by famous people?"

by agustinabotsfor 1 month ago

the first remake they ever did, and the only good one

by Anonymous 1 month ago

i dont remember the movie too, too, well but i do remember liking some parts of it. i do remember the lions looking like souless or expressionless.

by Exact_Desk5902 1 month ago

yeah i remember that. i also remember the hakuna matata scene (kinda) because it had some funny dialogue

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Does Lion King count as live action, truly? Did they train and use actual lions? Or is it just a more photo-realistic style of animation?

by Relative-Squash-7792 1 month ago

it looks like they just made the lions mouth move. i really don't know if the actual lion is CGI or real or not.

by Exact_Desk5902 1 month ago

I looked it up. The lions are definitely CGI. Pretty good CGI, but still definitely not a real lion.

by Relative-Squash-7792 1 month ago

And there's about 2% live action. It's all animated. It's also ass.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

it just feels like pandering. ...I mean, this is Disney, dude. Pandering is what they do.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

One of the best episodes of South park EVER.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Ha ha!

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I do not watch Disney live action remakes. But I honestly do not blame Disney. They know spending hundreds of millions of dollars on a Latin Princess live-action movie would sell poorly to the audience since it is not a "classic." Better to play it safe and change a few things than potentially lose millions.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Is it better though? Disney lost a TON on Snow White. It's their worst box office flop. All of their movies and TV shows are either not performing well and in decline or a disastrous flop. They are also doing massive damage to themselves as a brand which arguably in the long run is even worse for them. I do blame them. Their business choices have been bad. Pumping out bland preachy crap that nobody wants and asked for. All of their franchise are in the toilet. They got greedy chasing the Netflix thing and it's been a disaster.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I don't think it's so much that they know it won't work, they just don't KNOW it WILL work, you know? Tried and true versus risk. They could potentially make an amazing movie, but with their recent struggles across the board they're hurting financially (relatively speaking by their standards), so they're gonna want to play it safe, unfortunately.

by AltruisticCupcake342 1 month ago

It didn't have to be

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I never said it's what they had to do. It's just what they do, and what they have done for decades.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Mans you replied to just really wanted to say that, he had that stored in there 😂😂😂 Your "ok cool, but that's not what I said" killed me lmaoo

by AltruisticCupcake342 1 month ago

It made them into a multi-national media giant with world class theme parks folks travel from around the world to pay insane amounts of money to visit. I can't imagine why they would ever even consider changing their business plan. They didn't try to be some arthouse studio, they have always sought to make money through pandering. If you're looking for unique challenging art and boundary pushing film making, looking to a general audience super studio like Disney is like going to a vegan restaurant for good steak.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Right, its all they have ever done is pander The only thing that changed is who they are trying to pander too

by Anonymous 1 month ago

It is pandering They are only making them so they don't lose copyright and the films don't enter into public domain

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Each film is its own work and doesn't affect the previous being in copyright or not.

by kaylahbaumbach 1 month ago

It might just be specific things Disney wants to protect, like, Winnie the Pooh's red shirt or the look of the princess specific dresses.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

And reason No 2 is why they don't really care about the quality or if they flop. It is pandering and it is tokenistic. There are so many folk tales around the world that could be made which would be so much more representative than the remake of Little Mermaid was but film studios don't take risks anymore and going off on a tangent this is why get endless remakes of the same Austen or Brontë novel brought to the screen instead of one of their lesser known works or that of different authors.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

it is a reference to her skin. and whats crazy is stories like jasmine and mulan and other princesses like her. always. always. always do so great. the movies are always good. the race swapping a are making the movies worse. and the story of snow white is changed to where she doesnt get saved by the prince. and the prince dies.

by Exact_Desk5902 1 month ago

and the prince dies. I'm sorry you what now? He dies?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

So, now Disney doesn't only kill your mom. They also kill your boyfriend. 😂

by Livid_Wolf 1 month ago

Yes because apparently women are seen as weak if they have a love interest!

by Anonymous 1 month ago

You're getting angry about something that isn't even true. CrabsAndHam clearly hasn't seen the film, they're just making things up. There's no prince in the film the character is the leader of a bunch of bandits loyal to the old king (Snow White's father). He doesn't die, he still wakes Snow White from her sleep with true loves kiss, they still end up together.

by Esmeraldakunde 1 month ago

. and the story of snow white is changed to where she doesnt get saved by the prince. and the prince dies There's no prince in it, and the character you're referring to (Jonathan) doesn't die. She is still awoken from the spell by his kiss. You clearly haven't seen the film.

Like Mulan the cartoon that was almost completely cast with White voice actors

by Wisokyconner 1 month ago

Speaking of Matt Damon. He was in a Sci-fi movie called Elysium. It was a huge allegory for Earth being Mexico, space being the border, and a large space station called Elysium being the U.S.. The premise is that Matt Damon's character lives on Earth and wants to be on the Elysium where life is perfect and they have the cure for cancer. They should have gone 100% immersive and just have Matt Damon's character (who does speak spanish btw in the movie) be played by a latino.

The entire movie was originally called Snow White because her skin was white as snow. It's not even Snow White anymore when you change that part of the character, and make it some weird feminist girl boss story. Also I'll point out that the movie is currently the worst movie ever made by ratings. This opinion isn't unpopular.

by Rosettamaggio 1 month ago

the feminist part isnt bad, its the stripping of the og character. snow white is a girl with big dreams and an even bigger heart who stripped of her royal status by an abusive stepmother. despite all of this, she persevered and ended up happy. her being nice isnt a weakness; its a hidden strength. and i hate that disney is saying that being feminine and sweet is weak. that's anti-feminism

by Anonymous 1 month ago

This is just one of those things I honestly can't fathom caring about either way. Most of these reboot movies kinda suck to begin with so it's not even worth getting worked up about.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I don't think this is an unpopular opinion. Less publicly shared, maybe.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Does it matter. Are there not white latinas? Like do we really think Giselle bunchen is majority indigenous ancestry?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Also Hispanic here and don't think it's that deep, that actress is getting so much hate for no reason

by Karen86 1 month ago

Pandering is what Hollywood does best

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Honestly I feel like people shouldn't be too attached to these things. The OG will always be there just think of this as another adaptation much like how there are like what 20? 50? different Cinderella movies out there with different race/ethnicity for the main actresses

by Anonymous 1 month ago

It's for kids

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Then don't have them watch it. Just because you don't want your kids to watch it, doesn't mean no one will let their kids watch it. I've seen some truly, truly bad movies. This one isn't it imo

by Anonymous 1 month ago

thissss so much. im georgian and armenian but would i like a disney remake featuring a kardashian for "armenian representation"? no, i would instead want them to make a movie abou King Tamar, because she has such a cool story that could be turned into a movie

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Yeah I feel like Snow White is one of the worst princesses to change the race for, she's supposed to be white as snow, it's kinda crazy. I probably wont ever watch this anyway, so I don't really care, but I would be more inclined to watch some Hispanic princess whose life is steeped in her culture.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

If they were so worried about optics I don't understand why they remade this movie at all. Where a huge defining trait of the character is her snow white skin and it's the title of the movie. They've obviously been trying to push their brand image for a while of having characters of more diverse backgrounds & ethnicities, which is great, but this was such a weird way to go about it. I kind of get where maybe the intention was "look, any girl can be a Disney princess, even Snow White!" but it just comes across as confusing and the whole debacle of the dwarves makes it so much worse. They should have just left this one in the archives.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Disney wanted to race swap Snow White but didn't make her Asian, I'll never understand that decision

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Disney thinks the story is too rooted in a time when white was the default, so they're making a point of going in the other direction and erring on the side of over-"inclusivity". It's a strategic decision, and based on the reception, it's not a winning one. I think most people are pretty over the obsession over representation and this is likely a chapter in our history that is quickly coming to a close.

by AdMassive6609 1 month ago

Children don't care. Why do you?

by Upset_Access3756 1 month ago

Because there are grown up, like me, who still like to watch disney movies. It's nostalgia and just makes you feel good.

by Hildastanton 1 month ago

The entire complaint in the OP is that the actress isn't white… you can't watch the movie cuz the actress isn't white?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Great still not for you the old ones are still available

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Then watch them. No one is taking the movies you're nostalgic about away from you. If a POC is that upsetting for your nostalgia journey the original movie is sitting right there on the same streaming platform.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Weak reasoning. What's the point of making something that is exactly the same as the first version? This is one of the dumbest distractions possible considering the current state of the world

by Consistent-Kiwi 1 month ago

Lucky for you you don't have to watch a movie you don't want to see and all the versions from your childhood still exist, so just watch those.

I think saying Latina equals brown is part of the problem. Many people from Central and South American ancestry are white. Ethnicity and race are two different things.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Many people are also Afro Latino in South America too. But a vast majority are indigenous. So why pretend

by heaneyrosie 1 month ago

I don't deny or pretend that isn't the reality. I just think a lot of the phony uproar about princesses or mermaids or whatever not looking "authentic" (which we all know is thinly veiled racism at best) isn't even a genuine issue or concern.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I agree 1000%

by heaneyrosie 1 month ago

I looked at Rachel Zegler and not knowing anything about her background, I assumed she was white. I now know she has a European white father and a Colombian mother. So the OP has a problem with Rachel's mother being Colombian but had her mother been European, the casting would have been fine? Rachel would have been "pure" enough for the OP?

by Weak_Humor 1 month ago

"A short time later the queen gave birth to a daughter whose skin was as white as snow, whose cheeks were as red as blood, and whose hair was black as ebony." It's almost like this specific fairytale relies on her white skin as symbolism for her purity and kind heart. I've seen pale Latinas before, so I don't think the problem is that she's Latina, her skin is not pale though.

by dereck28 1 month ago

Um shes pretty pale.

by Dazzling_Matter_5625 1 month ago

Would you still say this if a non white role was filled by a white actor?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Nah there would be public outrage if they made Tiana white . The point is the change doesn't spread the right message. Instead of fixing the problem by making non white princesses they try to apologize for the fact that white princesses exist. It makes no sense and doesn't fix anything.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

But she's white…

by Anonymous 1 month ago

What I dont get about this depate is that I quite literally know white people with skin the same shade as Rachel Zegler, especially ones with black hair which is also needed to fullfill the poem. What would have been the acceptable shade for Snow White?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Kristen Stewart was snow white, she was more of an acceptable snow white in the sense that the fairytale plot is about her fair skin and her fairness and kindness; just purity. If Disney wanted to be inclusive they could've hired an albino actress with fair skin.

I'm always torn with this - I totally want there to be a diverse range of characters that have all the culture and history in the backstory, for kids to look up to in their own right. But also, if there is a live action remake (you sometimes have to ask why there is but anyway) then the best actors/actresses should be cast surely

by Cool-Trainer 1 month ago

They had a TV show made by Disney that was on for the better part of ten years in the 2010s where the evil queen was a Latina and considered the best part of the show. The problem with remaking snow white is remaking the animated film which only good quality is the animation(let's be honest the song aren't the best either)take that away every other version of the story is usually better just because it's actually having a take on the material and the characters usually have a more defined personality.

by Jacobsonbennie 1 month ago

I'm tired of all of the remakes, in general.

by Hour-Pomelo 1 month ago

They are possibly ways that they can reformat the storyline so that it's still based on the original Snow White story line. The main problem I saw with this last remake was that Snow White is objectively not as pretty as the evil queen when that's part of the main premise of the story. According to the magic mirror the evil queen was the most beautiful in all of the land until Snow White entered the story. Not to mention the amount of pandering they did in promos and the movie itself, the Snow White the studios chose her strong jawline is more prominent than the casted prince.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I don't understand what they just don't take stories from other cultures from where these minority characters come from, that would be vastly more interesting. Granted there is Coco (which is Pixar) and Encanto. I'm surprised that they haven't adapted an African story yet.

by Big_Spray_3643 1 month ago

This is a tactic used by Disney and other companies to make money while trying to do it the cheapest way possible. Remake a movie but add a diversity factor to bring in a different audience instead of creating something for them. I don't think it's just about pushing an agenda as it is with them just being lazy, greedy, inconsiderate bastards.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Disney changed all their original animation movies. You think the little mermaid had a happy ending? 😂

Like, I didn't hate Snow White I watched it and it was fine, like somethings I HATED (like her hair) had clever reasons for being that way I liked that her bad haircut kept her safe her whole life growing up haha The part I hated was mostly the dwarfs That was genuinely terrible That and I hated how out of place campy the villain song felt haha

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I get it. It seems odd that the counter to a white-washed world is to POC-wash white culture. Why can't Disney make more stories based on Hispanic culture? Coco and Book of Life were phenom.

There are lots of similar fairy tale stories that predate Snow White, like this one from Italy: "The Pentamerone, published 1634-1636, contains some stories with similarities to Snow White, such as an enchanted sleep in "The Young Slave" and a female character with snow-white skin in "The Raven)." In most Italian versions of Snow White, the heroine is not the daughter of a king but an innkeeper, the antagonist is not her stepmother but her biological mother, and instead of dwarfs she takes refuge with robbers. For instance, in La Bella Venezia, an Abruzzian version collected by Antonio De Nino, the mother asks her customers if they have seen a woman more beautiful than she. If they say they did not, she only charges them half the price, if they say they did she charges them twice the price. When the customers tell her that her daughter is prettier than her, she gets jealous.\34]) In Maria, her Evil Stepmother and the Seven Robbers (Maria, die böse Stiefmutter und die sieben Räuber), a Sicilian version collected by Laura Gonzenbach the heroine also lives with robbers, but the antagonist is her stepmother and she's not an innkeeper.\35])\36])"

by Anonymous 1 month ago

But the Kids growing up now, don't know how the characters used to look... (I mean Disney already made nicer versions of the brutal fairytales...) I also don't watch certain (live) remakes, because I don't like how they changed the storyline or the characters... That's my personal "problem" tho...

by Orie87 1 month ago

None of it is real. It's for children. The need to have such big and specific feeling about something so irrelevant is funny of all of us.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

It's really not up to you. People raise funds and invest in creating a movie. It's their creative decision. If you don't like it, don't watch the movie or find your own that depicts the same characters that look like the ones you grew up with. I really don't get the argument. It's funny, most people with this argument support capitalism, but treat this issue like a communist or socialist thing, where the government is coming out with movies or something.

by Successful-Ear-6160 1 month ago

To me it's not about wanting them to look the same as when I grew up, it's about respecting the story and the characters. Snow White is a Germanic fairytale about a woman who is described as "the fairest of them all" and her "skin as white as snow." Rachel Zigler, while a beautiful woman, does not meet those criteria. Yet in contrast, we have characters like the Black Panther, who is an African warrior, and we all know Disney would never dream of casting someone who isn't Black or African-American to play the role. Disney even got heavy flack of using a white performer in the suit at either a park meet and greet or a cruise meet and greet. As time goes on, I think there can be a middle ground on things like The Little Mermaid, but I think if you are going to guard the character integrity of characters like Black Panther you have to do the same for characters like Snow White.

by shaniya71 1 month ago

I mean if there was a good original story with a Latina princess and the movie was fun to watch then I don't think you would see the political divide

by Scot51 1 month ago

They should have cast an albino actress.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Sometimes it matters, but mostly it doesn't. In this case she is snow white. Literally the fairest in all the lands. She's so white the witch wants her dead so she can be the whitest.

by brenna71 1 month ago

Why do you care about the skin color of Disney Characters? How old are you?

by Annabell13 1 month ago

The original still exists, and honestly is better than any remake they could push out. Her race doesn't take away from the story and I don't mind it. Its for kids, what kid wouldn't want to watch someone who looks like them, playing the part of their favorite princess? As long as they don't try to white-wash the few diverse stories they have out there by casting a white woman to play Mulan or something ( and they didn't), I don't see an issue with this. White people have had more than enough representation in the media, and I see nothing wrong with mixing it up even if it is pandering. They are a multi-billion dollar company, they didn't get to be that popular by not pandering. I will say however, they do pander to a fault. The whole issue over the Lilo and Stitch movie is something to think about. The way they rewrote a major character just to pander to the Transphobes deserves much more attention than giving the princesses some culture IMO.

by gislasonalden 1 month ago

I'll play devil's advocate, as I don't care one way or the other, but I do love a good debate. You draw ire with Disney potentially "white washing" poc characters, but don't see a problem with the reverse happening? Isn't that a bit hypocritical? Same with the alien from Lilo and stitch being rewritten, why is pandering only acceptable when it's towards a minority? As a company don't they have the right to change details to maximize their profits? Again, I feel I should state, the views expressed above are purely for debates sake, and not my own personal opinions on matters.

by edd30 1 month ago

You have a valid argument for sure. I don't really think culturally mixing up some characters is as inherently bad as white washing them. It's a nuanced kind of hypocrisy I think. The thing is that there aren't really any OG princesses from the snow white era that aren't white. Its one thing to change up a story to add to it than changing it to take away from it. One situation gives a group of people the representation they otherwise didn't have, where as the Lilo and Stitch situation takes away from a group that is lacking it. The trans issue is a big one because of how much they are being attacked by people, the gov, and the media. It was a deliberate exclusion and it takes away from the story. I do agree with OP that they should also be focusing on creating movies that are inclusive and are exclusively made to be so. But I still don't see anything wrong with making a few OG stories a little diverse too. It how they pick and choose who to represent that's a big issue for me.
