+40 Not all video game movies need to be animated, amirite?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Almost all action scenes in live action movies are animated anyway. To me, it can go either way depending on the game. Mario and sonic obviously are gonna work better as animated art style where as uncharted or Last of Us don't really have any reason to be animated.

Sonic was REALLY good live action actually.

You gave more reasons as to why more of these movies should be animated than why you think they should continue to be live action.

Yeah but there's a difference in a GTA movie being live action and Pac-Man being live action

Also thinking that it's live action doesn't make it automatically awful

Show Not a movie Point still stands

Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo would probably disagree.

I would consider the Sonic movies to be animated movies, even though a good chunks of the characters are real actors. And I would consider them not bad at all considering they're video game movies AND intended for kid audiences.

That last word should be "made."

Nah, all video game movies would be better animated. Amazon's Secret level makes a pretty good case for this. Even when the art style is hyper realistic, it's still more entertaining than live action, partially because it allows them to do things regular humans just can't do believably even with special effects.

Last of Us was pretty good in live action. Really depends on if the game in question has cartoonish graphics I think.

I did like The Last of Us show, but I still would have preferred it be animated. Certainly would have avoided some of the questionable casting choices. And most of the IP featured in Secret Level doesn't have a cartoony art style, yet they still work better in ED animation. Personally I like 3D animation better because the games are already 3D animation. Making them live action is a pointless shifting of style to me. The show/movie should look like a higher fidelity version of the game.

The Last of Us is a bad example because it's such a grounded setting already, so of course it works. It becomes less and less appropriate the more things stray from that, which most games do. You simply can't put a human being in Warhammer 40K astartes power armor and have it look good, for example. Astartes simply have different proportions than regular humans and thus fill out the suit differently.
