+18 "This movie ruined my childhood" is a stupid remark. amirite?

by morissettebell 1 month ago

The thing about claiming a movie "ruined" your childhood? It's often an exaggeration for emphasis. Saying that when you had it rougher than most, like, actually losing a parent or being abused, just puts things into perspective. It's not even comparable to getting ripped off on some overpriced toy. Like, no, that doesn't hold a candle to real childhood trauma. So yeah, chill with the dramatics and be more considerate of others who've had it way worse

by Laishaswift 1 month ago

Exaggeration is a foundational aspect of comedy. Even the most melodramatic person doesn't really believe their childhoods are retroactively impacted by the latest Hollywood cash grab.

Idk have you SEEN the average alt-right youtube channel.

by Key-Entertainer-7568 1 month ago

Even the exaggeration still implies that your memories are somehow negatively impacted.

The examples that you gave are more of "runined life" rather than childhood ngl And what ppl prolly mean that they maybe used to watch "Snow white" and liked it so much, and seeing that being trashed on made them "ruin their childood" (not literally)

by Anonymous 1 month ago

but why? you still have the option of watching the old snow white. I think all the disney live action movies are pretty bad but i'm an adult and they aren't made for me.

by Fantastic-Job 1 month ago

If your going to get a remake of something you like, and if its bad I'm just disappointed. Thou i agree that ruining childhood may be going too far. And ngl I don't think anyone whos watched the snow white actually cares much about this

by Anonymous 1 month ago

It's hyperbole. The intent is to go too far, it's not meant to be taken at face value at all.

by Either-Storage 1 month ago

yes, ruined life that occurred during their childhood.

by morissettebell 1 month ago

So you only just learned the concept of hyperbole today, hey, op?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Right. Hence, hyperbole.

by reginaldnikolau 1 month ago

It's called hyperbole, mate.

by Artistic_Drawer8561 1 month ago

so OP, there's this magical thing called a figure of speech—used by some highly advanced apes to stress a point without flinging bananas hey look its the time to evolve!

by Master-Cut-9623 1 month ago

Right, and he's saying it's a dumb figure of speech…what aren't you getting?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

People did that an insane amount with Zack Snyder because he made a superhero movie they didn't like I mean disliking the movie is totally normal, but he literally had to quit the internet for a while because so many people were harassing him and his family, and mocking his daughters suicide It's just a movie, people are so dramatic

by Bahringergia 1 month ago

I never understood how one could retroactively have their childhood ruined.

by Boring_Air7887 1 month ago

It's called Hyperbole

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I never understand why people get so pissy about remakes. Just dont watch it. Just becaise it exists doesnt mean you cant watch the original. No ones taking your favourite movie away from you. Just pretend its not there. It has no impact on your life.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Uhhhh I agree with your sentiment but not your reasoning. Like no one who's saying this is comparing seeing a bad movie to having a sibling murdered with an axe. That's just ridiculous. It's silly because no one is forcing people to watch these movies, and everyone's still allowed to watch the older ones.

by sheldonmills 1 month ago

This is wildly reaching.

by reicherteffie 1 month ago

You ruined my childhood.

by Hacketttara 1 month ago

Even if they aren't referring to movies, it's usually a stupid remark.

by Kuphaleli 1 month ago

People who say "X movie ruined my childhood" are just showing us how terribly fragile they are.

by Confident_Hunt 1 month ago

I think you misunderstand what's happening. When people say it's raining cats and dogs they don't mean it literally. The movie "ruined their childhood" is no different. It's a hyperbole to speak to the poor quality of something and your nonsense bringing fragility into is just that, nonsense.

by Either-Storage 1 month ago

Well, the concept of hyperbole is not beyond me, but when you look at the sheer volume of bearded YouTubers mining all that rage for financial gain, it might be time to give that particular line a rest.

by Confident_Hunt 1 month ago

I mean you are taking the hyperbole as its face value so yea… gonna go ahead and say you aren't getting it. And a few people making nonsense videos on YouTube doesn't make them the face of this extremely general hyperbole.

by Either-Storage 1 month ago

Sorry if you're feeling fragile after being explained a basic term you don't understand. Good luck out there, it looks like you need it.

by Either-Storage 1 month ago

Agreed. I just don't understand the adults who truly get angry at children's media changing because it's different than what they were used to. Who cares?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Uh, ok, so what you're telling me is that you are illiterate. And fragile. Good to know. Have a great weekend.

by Confident_Hunt 1 month ago

Cool…..

by Anonymous 1 month ago

My friend's dad dying when he was 5 is not nonsense. What are you saying?

by morissettebell 1 month ago

I wish I could decipher it myself.
