+35 Christ the Redeemer shouldn't be a wonder of the world, amirite?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I think it's famous because of the placement. It's a great view from there.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Well it isn't a wonder of the world, the only remaining one is the great pyramid

There are seven famous ancient wonders. There are more than just that though. Hagia Sophia, Machu Pichu, and Stonehenge are examples of unofficial wonders that are still recognized as wonders of the world

Stonehenge is a bunch of stupid rocks. It's only a wonder because of the cultural significance. No different than Christ being one due to religious reasons. I agree with the other guy. Only the pyramids are truly wonders now.

They don't know what culture built them

Didn't say I agreed with Stonehenge either, just that is an example of an unofficial wonder

by Anonymous 1 month ago

You know why it's unofficial? Because it's not official.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

You know why it's unofficial? Because people still call it a wonder of the world but it's not part of the seven

by Anonymous 1 month ago

that last line means it all. its a christian piece of rock, which makes it very important in a christian world

by Anonymous 1 month ago

true, i agree that its just visually boring and not that big, but the religious aspect is the most important part to me

by Anonymous 1 month ago

And the religious aspect of the Great Buddha doesn't matter?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

buddhism isnt as big of a religion as christianity, especially not in brazil (this is coming from a buddhist)

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Which is understandable, but again. If the religious aspect was the only reason it was a wonder, than shouldn't a statue with equal (imo more) religious ties should be in the running?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

i guess so, the big buddha statue is also not super visually interesting. but most statues are (they are still rock, after all)

As a fine arts student who is going for my BFA, the Great Buddha is infinitely more visually interesting than the Christ the Redeemer. The Buddha statue has movement, has details, has emotion, and is carved unsymmetrically. Christ the Redeemer is stiff, symmetrical, absolutely no movement, very little detail. I have studied Christ the Redeemer in my university lectures. He is boring. I have studied the oldest sculpture which is known as the first sculpture we have documentation of. Even that is more visually interesting than Christ the Redeemer

OK sure. That's hardly a list that is relevant anymore. Put whatever you want on there and i'll sign

I was listening to a podcast recently (Your Stupid Opinions) where they talked about this and they agreed that something built less than a hundred years ago shouldn't be a wonder of the world, especially when far more impressive things were built around the same time like the goddamn Empire State Building.

Exactly!!! And if it's all about the religious ties, and that is the only thing making it a wonder, than what about the Great Buddha?
