Can't you say the same thing about every other long-running show?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Yes, any episodic show with no storyline should be cancelled after 8 seasons, as that's usually the point where it overstays it's welcome.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Perfect run of a show is 6 seasons and a movie.

Ehhh, I'd say there's certain shows that have an interesting enough premise, have creative enough writers, and entertaining enough characters that can run for a decade plus. But those shows are few and far in between 8 seasons is a bit of a weird cutoff too. The sweet spot for most shows is only about 4-5 seasons, running for 5-7 years. But yeah, no episodic show should be around for 25-30+ years like SpongeBob, the Simpsons, South Park, or Family Guy. At that point the show is bound to have seasonal rot probably after a decade and some change.

What episodic show was still good after 8 seasons? Almost every sitcom, adult animated show, and cartoon that I like got bad by the 8th season or earlier.

Yes, because TV shows shouldn't just keep running ad nauseum. It's why there are a lot of great American TV shows which outstay their welcome in an attempt to milk the product. The US office is a great example. Once they found their own identity it was a great show for a few seasons. They should have tied up the stories and closed it out nicely but they just couldn't let a good product go to waste and it just dragged and lost focus. Compare that to the original which, while an acquired taste for American audiences, is perfectly wrapped up with all the story arcs concluding brilliantly. Not to mention it's supposed to be a "real" documentary and there's no way a mundane office documentary would air for that long. It's not a UK vs. US thing either, all the "great" shows: The Wire, The Sopranos, Breaking Bad etc. are well paced and have a clear predetermined ending. It's just good writing as a priority. Good things have a good ending.

by Anika65 1 month ago

yeah now i think about it , you're probably right

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Since the og creator died (RIP) it's just been trash, notice how "suddenly" there are like 20 different spin offs and shows and movies and collabs that are easily forgotten instead of just the iconic series and maybe one or two really good movies? Yep it's bc of that.

...if he hadn't "come back" to the show around season 10, would literally anything you said be relevant? It probably would've still happened.

obviously, I'm just noticing a trend here

I watched the very first episode of Sponge Bob the day it came out and I have made peace with the fact that a kid's cartoon continued without considering how a middle aged man would feel about it Kid's like it. That's all that matters. No one cares what our old asses think about a kid's show. "No one's watching it"....yeah how many pre-schoolers are you regularly having discussions with to have come to that conclusion?

by friedrichberge 1 month ago

My dog watches it (on season 3 atm). I'll let y'all know how she feels about later seasons.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

My kids don't watch but that's only because don't have Nickelodeon

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I enjoy it. I think it had a second boom starting with season 12 and is only getting better

by Anonymous 1 month ago

The thing about something like SpongeBob is if it was canceled after six seasons, which would have been a very good run for a kid's cartoon, it would have been revived by now because every network wants to rely on old IP instead of taking risks and Nickelodeon hasn't long been struggling with finding other hits. Not that I disagree with you but I think that explains its longevity. It's managed to survive for so long it entered the era where everything is a revival and now it'll never end.

They should go back to hand drawn cells and bring back clever writing.

Spongebob hasn't been good since season 5ish. RIP Stephen Hillenburg!

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Original writers came back a couple seasons ago it's actually pretty decent again

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Same with the Simpson from about 20 years ago

Is it possible that it's you that changed more than Spongebob? Only saying that because Spongebob aired when I was a young adult. It was fine but it wasn't that funny since it was mostly aimed at people younger than me. Maybe that's your issue now?

by Glittering_Solid_116 1 month ago

i'm born in 2000. it aired before then. i could watch the old seasons now and still laugh

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Did you start watching it as a kid though? Obviously adults, including ones my age, enjoy the show. There are tons of cartoons adults enjoy. I grew up on Ren and Stimpy and that show would probably still make me laugh today, but I understand why it will never make my parents laugh.

by Glittering_Solid_116 1 month ago

Don't watch it.....

Everything you aren't familiar with is weird, get over it.

by Altenwerthana 1 month ago

I really hope this is just Stephen Hillenburg reincarnated.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

If you're getting this worked up over a cartoon, you clearly have more pressing issues.
