+21 Ban betting on nonprofessional sports. amirite?

by alfredokeebler 1 month ago

How about we do a better job of banning and punishing sending death threats.

by Mack52 1 month ago

100%. I bet on NCAA games every march madness. Stake has good odds for them and I have cashed out pretty high amts before. Don't take that away from me!

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Ideally but just not practical.

by alfredokeebler 1 month ago

Or allow sending hate and death threats to people who send hate and death threats to kill ds who play sports. The we can bet if a death threat sender gets death threat sent to them or not. That way kids would be safe, or at the very least, kids can also join in on betting if death threat senders get death threats back. Better yet, they can secretly send death threats to death threat senders while betting on they would get such threats, You know. Just like wall street bets.

by Few-Squirrel 1 month ago

I like you. The suggestion is terrible but I like that you're suggesting it.

by Mack52 1 month ago

The fact that sports gambling is legal and encouraged in the days when average people struggle to pay their rent and put food on the table is pretty awful. Government failed us on this one IMO.

by Bradenhagenes 1 month ago

The government doesn't put up ads for betting. If people can't pay their bills and they still bet that's their fault, not Government.

by Odd-Feeling 1 month ago

Oh I just meant govt legalized it. I get that people have and always will bet on everything. But legalizing it makes it a lot easier and it's advertised SO much. Just really bad timing with legalizing it coinciding with the crazy cost of living issues.

by Bradenhagenes 1 month ago

Yeah but making it so easily accessible has made it worse

by alfredokeebler 1 month ago

I bet if you asked the players, they're willing to deal with it for that that NIL money.

by Ancient_Review 1 month ago

That is factually incorrect.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Is it? It's hard for me to imagine all of the sports betting apps haven't lead to an increase in how much people bet.

by PlasticMirror3218 1 month ago

How much folks bet is not tied to how many losers send death threats.

by Ancient_Review 1 month ago

But more people betting total is connected to how many people are sending death threats It is easier to bet on sports than it ever has been. So odds are, more people are betting on sports than ever. More people betting means more losers who send death threats betting. Y'know?

by PlasticMirror3218 1 month ago

I'd tend to think it's definitely not proportional. Those losers so hooked and out of control were likely the ones betting illegally already, for the most part. Source: my guess.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Source: my guess. I totally respect this. My response is a simple "Huh, yeah, maybe"

by PlasticMirror3218 1 month ago

Correlation does not equal causation.

by Ancient_Review 1 month ago

....Do you really think betting becoming easier and more accessible doesn't cause more people to bet?

by PlasticMirror3218 1 month ago

Do you really think the people that care so much they send death threats weren't already betting.

by Ancient_Review 1 month ago

What about the rise in gambling addiction with the increase of apps. Are you going to say those are only a correlation too.

by alfredokeebler 1 month ago

I mean yeah maybe A person could have no interest in betting, see an ad, get addicted, and have things get out of control, and start sending death threats. Gamblers have to start somewhere, and once again it's easier than ever to start.

by PlasticMirror3218 1 month ago

Before they tried to ban alcohol they attempted to ban gambling… guess what that caused? an uptick in gambling locations and more people addicted.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

It's factually 100% correct lol It's absurdly ignorant to claim it's not

by Necessary_Bug_8605 1 month ago

Says you. Making gambling/betting illegal only makes the problem worse.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Or at least can we ban the dang commercials?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Lets start with prescription medication ads.

by Ancient_Review 1 month ago

I think sports betting should be outlawed in general unless you can go somewhere and place a bet. It was fine when it was Vegas because you had to travel to Vegas to do it. Having it in your pocket is just predatory.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Never heard of bookies? OTB? Lottery? Scratchers? Addicts have had many options for many years.

by Ancient_Review 1 month ago

You still have to go to a store to buy a lottery ticket. I'm not a fan of the lottery either. It's state-sanctioned gambling and doesn't actually benefit society.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I can't speak for all states, but here the lottery does a ton of good for the state. That money goes back to helping schools, the needy, etc. It's all published and open books.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Lottery in my state has an app. And there is benefit to society, its a revenue generator.

by Ancient_Review 1 month ago

People have been able to bet on sports via the internet long before states started to legalize it. I've been doing it since 2004.

by lenniebaumbach 1 month ago

Most people follow the law

by Necessary_Bug_8605 1 month ago

I used to work in a bar where they'd bet on like everything, and I got 20% of the pot. Sporting events, tag, that slippery stairs contest, jeopardy, wheel of fortune, etc. I loved it.

by Ok-Entrance7250 1 month ago

With the introduction of NIL contracts, college sports is basically a professional minor league…

by collinsbernard 1 month ago

That is another thing I have big issues with. I agree these kids were being taken advantage of before hand but the way NIL was implemented was wrong IMO

by alfredokeebler 1 month ago

Ban all online gambling

by Necessary_Bug_8605 1 month ago

Crazy comparing those two

by Rich_Connection 1 month ago

Yeah, one gets sent to an El Salvador prison the others gets to jerk off in mom's basement. I am curious why you think the person sending death threats gets to stay in mommy's basement?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

That's not what I'm saying? I just think it's crazy to compare someone who wants to kill others with someone who just is in the wrong place… In no way at all do I think death threats should be taken lightly.

by Rich_Connection 1 month ago

We are saying the same thing... but you seem to think I advocating something I am not. I am just stating a fact.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

No, you're saying than an illegal immigrant should get the same treatment as someone sending death treats. I don't think their consequence should be the same.

by Rich_Connection 1 month ago

Nope. Not saying that. Read again.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

They were going to send death threats to anyone regardless of the money involved lol

by Braunnicolas 1 month ago

Some will but the popularity of betting apps has made it much worse

by alfredokeebler 1 month ago

But the ease of betting today has made it worse

by alfredokeebler 1 month ago

I can't really research this right now, but if you have some on hand, I would happily look at it!

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Any simple Google search give a bunch of results, not all of which are trustworthy. However it is bad enough the NCAA is putting our commercials during March madness about it

by alfredokeebler 1 month ago

They're pro

by BrainUpstairs2415 1 month ago

No, they're not. College is an amateur league

by Anonymous 1 month ago

It's wild that you think that college athletes weren't getting death threats before virtual sports gambling blew up.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

No I know they were but with the ease of online betting it has increased unnecessarily.

by alfredokeebler 1 month ago

the way things are going right now, i anticipate an executive order allowing people to place bets on middle school sports any day now...

by Prudent_Mention 1 month ago

Sad but true
