There is nothing wrong with driving below the speed limit, even by a significant fraction. amirite?
by Anonymous1 month ago
Some roads have minimum speed limits. On a federal interstate highway, you can get pulled over for going 40 mph.
by kacikerluke1 month ago
Thanks, yes, that's what I was referring to in the parentheses. I acknowledge that, and agree that the minimum speed's observance in such places is important to safety.

You can be pulled over for going too slow. If you're afraid to drive on that road, then don't drive on it. Bad Weather conditions is the only acceptable excuse for going 25 in a 40

I've been pulled over for going 40 in a 55 at evening with deer activity in a marked deer crossing zone. If I can't change my driving for that, why the sign? I was not ticketed, and if I was, I would have gone to court to fight it. I don't think that would be legal.

This isn't just an unpopular opinion, it is also illegal in many jurisdictions

i hope you're not a fully licensed driver. yikes.

I can't believe you're trying to take away his rights.
by Anonymous1 month ago
This is an unpopular opinion. However, driving is a privilege, not a right. That privilege can be taken away from you. Generally speaking, following the flow of traffic is the safest way to be on a road, whether that's fast or slow
by Montethompson1 month ago
You're right, thanks. I was being generous by calling it a right in order to draw the distinction between what the entitlements of motorists really are, and are not.

Nonody is mad at you for slowing down in a blizzard. If there's a line of people tailgating each other behind you in clear weather, the technicalities of the widely skirted law don't invalidate your honorary asshole sash.

You have the right and duty to drive safely. Which also means not creating a hazard. If you can't drive a car at normal speeds in normal conditions, you shouldn't be driving. If conditions are hazardous and you feel people aren't driving safely, the best thing you can do is move to the right or let them pass. Creating traffic/congestion is unsafe and causes accidents.

I'm a speed limit follower. I would say around 90% of the time I go exactly the speed limit. I work for a traffic engineering firm and am looking at crash data all the time and so on my neighborhood roads where I live and see kids playing, I'm right at 25mph.
by Big_Painter98671 month ago
Drivers are prohibited from driving at speeds that impede or limit normal and reasonable flow of traffic. (Laws may vary depending on where you live)

Hahaha I'm sorry, friend! Would it make it any better to know while you were stuck there, you probably doubled your fuel efficiency and saved a little carbon from the atmosphere?
by Anonymous1 month ago
The faster one drives, the lower the fuel economy. If someone else will pay for my gas, I'll be happy to drive fast.
by Anonymous1 month ago
Okay but don't camp in the left lane if you're going to go that slow.

You don't really want to live in the world that you are prescribing here. Where "oh you don't want to be treated that way? Well do you have the right not to? By default you do not have any such right, that's our starting point. Now prove to me that you do have that right, and do it within the terms of my own personal world view or it doesn't count; and if I, as the sole arbiter of these things, come to the conclusion that your claim has fallen short, then well be prepared for me to keep treating you that way." Being the one person who gets to act like this is an awesome ego trip. But try living in a society comprised of people who all act like this, and pretty soon you will also agree it's terrible.

40 in a 55 is dangerous. Not 120 in a 55 dangerous but dangerous nonetheless. It's good to be cautious while driving, but if you think 15mph below the speed limit is fine then maybe you shouldn't be driving in the first place.
by Anonymous1 month ago
It's fine as long as the people behind you have the possibility to overtake. In my country we have a lot of one-lane 80 km/h roads where you're either not allowed to overtake or with a physical barrier in place that prevents you from overtaking. Some people drive 40-50 km/h on these roads, which is incredibly frustrating since in the worst scenario you're taking almost twice as long to reach your destination. Driving too slow is a thing and it can even be dangerous, no matter what type of road you drive on.

Dont drive 12mph in a university zone and get surprised when everyone's honking you! Had someone do this to me and I was sooo pissed when I was late.
by Anonymous1 month ago
Absolutely not, go the speed limit or stay home if 45 miles an hour is too frightening.

Where is it stated that you have a right to buy a car?
by Massive-Nobody1 month ago
Nowhere, this was for illustrative purposes. You don't have any right to mobility in America, it seems.
by Anonymous1 month ago
You can get a ticket for going too slow. It's obstructing traffic. Personally I drive the speed limit unless there's inclement weather conditions that obscure my view.
by WeirdSpirit81 month ago
Yes you can. You definitely should drive slow if you believe going the speed limit would be dangerous (example, you have furniture in the back and your trunk has to stay open) That being said, some roads have minimum speed limits. Also think of a big highway. I would say it could be very dangerous going below the speed limit in the passing lane. You change the whole flow of traffic, now everyone would need to pass on the right which can be dangerous
by Anonymous1 month ago
Very unpopular. Speed limits are extremely conservative as is, 55 in a 55 is not the maximum safe speed. This is why cops don't care unless you're going at least 10 over. Holding up everyone else on the road because you have nowhere better to be and think 40 in a 55 is acceptable is far more entitled than 99% of the rest of the population wanting to go faster
by Creepy-Jellyfish59281 month ago
There are actually roads that have a minimum speed limit. And when someone is going 55mph, or 60mph since most people use that 5mph grace, someone going 40mph is going to be dangerous. A 20 or even 15mph difference can be dangerous depending on the road. On the road, you're expected to be PREDICTABLE. Going 40mph in a 55mph zone is not predictable.
