+24 A lot of people in Lower Manhattan probably had crazy hairstyles for a few days after 9/11 due to haircuts being abruptly interrupted mid way through and nearby salons being closed in the immediate aftermath. amirite?

Nope, just a speculation apparently.

Haven't seen a good one like this for a while

The attacks started a little after 8am on a Tuesday. I'm not too sure there were many barbers/salons open quite that early or that they would be particularly busy if they were. Also, that would be an insanely expensive place to have a barbershop or salon.

People cutting themselves shaving is probably more like it.

Chinatown is cheap and closeby

I was there. No salons were open that early in the morning. And that part of lower Manhattan wasn't known exactly for salons. Think more greasy lunch spots for the finance crowd at work. I remember Chelsea Jeans being covered in ash though. When they reopened they even cordoned off a section of the window display to preserve it still covered in ash. For years until they went out of business.

Oh, 24/7 places definitely do exist in the city, but OP said "a lot of people" and there aren't that many. But you're right. And I checked open times of those that operate normal hours and the vast majority are at 9am.

On weekdays, early morning appointments like 7 or 8 are popular so you can get your hair done before work

It's also not like your changes that much in a day.

There aren't that many salons near WTC plaza, and people who weren't in the towers had plenty of time to evacuate.

Most of the people in the towers had plenty of time too, but they were told it wasn't necessary. I bet that weighs pretty heavy on the people that made that decision, assuming any of them survived.

About a year after 9/11, as I was leaving my apartment building around 7:30 am for work, I noticed the busy corner deli, (with a hair salon above) had gained a huge crack in the wall. When I returned home later that day, the whole building was completely gone. This was on the corner of Greenwich and Rector, just South of the South Tower.

Gone? No rubble?

Some fades never got to fade out

Wow. I wonder what happened to people that had like, dye or perming chemicals in their hair.

I was there and after going downtown to see what was going on I remember walking back up to my place on 23rd and there were people in salons still getting haircuts and services and I remember thinking how crazy that was

Not sure salons were open that early

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Like everyone's saying, salons probably weren't open yet. This does open up a larger conversation about crazy hairstyles when attacks DID occur during prime salon hours.

Not sure how many people were getting haircuts at 8-9 AM on a Tuesday though.

It would be a silent burning frustration in your mind as there's cameras everywhere and you look ridiculous, but how can you complain about something so small in the midst of everything. I feel like I could see George from Seinfeld stuck in this situation.

It would also apply to any kind of earthquake, fire alarm etc.

Do people need daily haircuts?
