+24 Coffee bought or made anywhere else but home is a complete waste of money, amirite?

by Donnadoyle 1 month ago

I make a great coffee at home but the independent shop down the road makes a great different tasting one so I treat myself for £3.40 every now and again.

by wehnerbrock 1 month ago

Aye, I'm gunna die, we're all gunna die.. a £4 vanilla latte isn't changing that

by eulajohnston 1 month ago

What!?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Oh, sorry you had to find out this way… but it's true we're all gunna die… it really doesn't matter, do whatever makes you happy

by eulajohnston 1 month ago

If we're all gonna die, I'd rather enjoy life rather than raw dogging it and being unhappy just to "save money"

by Spirited-Target4779 1 month ago

Lmaooooo This sounds like me when I accidentally remember that earth will eventually cease to exist when the sun expands too far & everything feels very less serious in comparison. There will never be a paper trail of how much money I've spent at Starbucks.

by Trick-Coffee 1 month ago

Alcohol is probably twice as much as a cup of coffee. I don't see why people freak out over a $5 cup of coffee especially if it's a once a week thing. How much does a night out at a bar cost? How much does eating out cost? A cup of coffee is nothing.... We make coffee at home but it's nice to sit in a coffee shop sometimes and listen to a band or something. You can easily get two cups of coffee and a pastry for 15 bucks. That would be one nice cocktail anywhere else

by Ryleighgulgowsk 1 month ago

Yeah, spending $3 above home price for coffee versus $20 over home price for beers. Idk, atmosphere and treating yourself is part of life.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

When I drink alcohol in public, I sit at a bar and talk to people. When I buy coffee in public, I stab anyone who talks to me.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

What if you have an espresso martini tho

by Ryleighgulgowsk 1 month ago

100%

by Terryamani 1 month ago

Espresso is cheap? Look at moneybags and his $700 espresso maker.

by BeltProfessional2297 1 month ago

And then you have to clean it yourself! Including the steaming wand. No thanks!

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I went down the coffee rabbit-hole during Covid while stuck at home. Bought grinders, gadgets, and every kind of brewer and beans out there. Including an espresso machine that basically has sat idle in the basement since 2022😂. Home brewing can be a fun and rewarding ride, but at the end of the day it can also be a giant PITA. Whenever I want good coffee (especially espresso drinks) now, I just splurge at one of my local independent coffee shops.

by Superb-Praline-7299 1 month ago

Tbh, when I'm in a rush- I'll just microwave my milk in the cup for a minute and sometimes will even use a little hand mixer frother thing (non electric) that "whips" the milk and gives it that "steamy / fluffy" flavor. 99 percent the same taste with a lot less effort.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Why do you even drink coffee? You can buy pills that have more caffeine than a cup of coffee. So YOU'RE wasting money, too!

by Anonymous 1 month ago

More Caffeine AND it's insanely cheaper than ground coffee, filters, a coffee machine, a Keurig with K-Cups, etc! This is why rubes like OP can't afford a house!!

by Geovany21 1 month ago

What pills we talking 👀

by Dizzy_Beat798 1 month ago

Pure caffeine pills

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Caffeine pills, literally just caffeine in a pill. It's a thing but it also can be stupid reckless because it makes it so easy to take harmful doses.

by Significant_Arm5269 1 month ago

They were joking lol

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Good coffee is a wonderful thing!

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Bruh, you're missing the point with the dumb joke. You can make the same coffee for a fraction of the price at home, so if you drink it for the taste (like most coffee drinkers do) then you can save a lot of money by doing it yourself. It's most likely faster to make it yourself as well.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Idk. I used to sell at a high end appliance shop and got a bunch of different coffee machines / espresso makers under 1k. I can't make something as good as my local independent shop that has a 30k machine that includes free lifetime service. And it's not because I haven't tried. You can get close but it's not the same

by Marcelle18 1 month ago

There is objectively zero different between this argument and any kind of food/beverage sale. If you think buying beer / pasta / whatever outside of home is waste too then all power to you. But there is pretty much no difference between paying a premium for a fancy and convenient beverage than paying a premium for a fancy and convenient bowl of spaghetti

by kmckenzie 1 month ago

Continuing that logic, you can make a nutrient adequate mush for a couple dollars per meal. Why buy and eat real food?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Paying £20 for a steak dinner is stupid when I can buy a decent rib eye for £5 and cook it at home. By this logic anyway. You are paying for the environment and convenience, or if it's takeaway just the convenience.

by MacaronFragrant 1 month ago

In some cases I agree. But paying for a dinner out that requires a bunch of uncommon ingredients you would only use once at home or some different meal you have no idea to cook is probably worth it. The same way that you don't wanna have to own a bunch of random syrups and dairy products that expire and a premium coffee machine if you just want a fancy weird beverage every once in a while. Like I could make almost any cocktail on earth from my apartment but I don't really wanna buy all the random ingredients I need just to try something. Coffee can be kind of similar.

by kmckenzie 1 month ago

I am extremely jealous. My cook-at-home steak (bought from United States Whole food) costed $45. I do admit that it is on a pricy side and I bought a large steak (1.8 pound with bone) for a single person. But there is nowhere I can find a rib-eye steak less than $10 a pound.

by Electronic_Buy4663 1 month ago

Paying for fresh made noodles is a very easy purchase to justify. I'm not going to go through that level of effort.

by Funknorris 1 month ago

Where in Europe? Maybe Italy is an anomaly then because taking an espresso over there is a very quick operation. Two sips and done— ciao ✌️

by emilianocruicks 1 month ago

‘I get the convenience factor' -ignores the convenience factor. The fact is most people don't want coffee at home. The same reason you go to a bar for a drink, or a restaurant for food. You like the atmosphere, social setting. Gives you a reason to get out of the house or out the office.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

lol i feel like OP must be 16 and just got his first job where they're just now thinking about money. This isn't an unpopular opinion, OP just doesn't know how supply and demand works

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I have money to waste

by Trick-Coffee 1 month ago

Yeah this is the answer, I make enough that spending a couple bucks on a coffee isn't gunna break the bank for me.

by Hoppeclarabelle 1 month ago

Please tell me how you are making espresso at home for under $1 and include equipment costs in your per cup calculation please

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Average beans at average prices and a basic espresso maker that lasts 5+ years can get you under a dollar.

by ExampleNo 1 month ago

Sure, as a long term investment. But the up front cost of making cafe quality espresso and milk drinks at home is definitely steep and that can be a barrier for many.

by croninfrancesca 1 month ago

I don't drink coffee but I'm assuming you don't eat any meals outside of your home also?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I'm not sure the method of making it, but a 12 oz. (tall) coffee at my local SB is $2.65. While more expensive than at-home, that price doesn't seem to have gone up absurdly.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Is spending money on something for yourself, be it a special treat, or just something that makes you happy, really a waste of money? 🤔 If you're enjoying it, it's not being "wasted". You just sound extremely bitter about other people's personal choices that make them happy.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Starbucks' coffee always tastes burnt.

by Tiny-Masterpiece-419 1 month ago

That's because it is burnt, roasted way too damn dark. Works well for the espresso based milk drinks that are popular there, but makes for awful coffee.

by croninfrancesca 1 month ago

Espresso and the espresso maker is not cheap. We make our coffee at home 99% of the time but it was an investment for a while before it paid itself off. And then the grinder in the espresso maker broke randomly at 3 years so we had to buy a separate grinder. It's now cheaper for us to make at home but it didn't start off that way.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

We have no espresso machine, we dont have the syrups, flavorings, or sauces, we dont have a milk frother, no way to steam the milk, and no space for any of the required appliances or tools So we are going to buy our Starbucks when we want it

by Plane_Independent 1 month ago

How much does an espresso machine, and grinder cost again?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

That's like saying someone buying a sandwich from a shop is a complete waste of money. Like, yeah you can make it at home for cheaper, but maybe you want one in the middle of the day? Also, unpopular opinion? No. Its a regularly held opinion. It just doesn't make that big a deal in people's lives unless they go to the extreme with it. Let people enjoy the convenience if that's how they want to spend their money.

by Previous_Sherbert 1 month ago

I physically don't have counter space in my house for more appliances or the syrups and ingredients to make the drinks I want. Not to mention the people who just don't want to make them at home. It's only a waste of money if you want it to be. The people who do it regularly clearly don't see it that way.

by kendrickpagac 1 month ago

I don't understand, do you think most people are going there, buying coffee, and bringing it home? People go there because they want coffee and are not home nor plan to be home for a while.

by odeckow 1 month ago

Depends on the type of drink tbh. Some places have really good options

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I agree. Starbucks is a huge waste of money 99% of the time I make coffee at home.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Keurig is awul. You'd be much better off with a Mr. Coffee vs a Keurig.

by croninfrancesca 1 month ago

In college I used to consistently go to a coffee shop to study bc it was driving me nuts just studying in my room, bc for me, that's supposed to be a place of relaxation. But I felt bad just taking up space at a place of business without giving them any money, so I would just buy a coffee while I'm there. Also, consider the fact that some people might just need more caffeine throughout their day than a morning coffee will supply before they get a chance to go back home. I usually do drink a coffee that I make every morning. But guess what? By 3 pm I'm crashing. And my schedule won't allow me to drive home just to fire up the keurig

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Your opinion is noted but people give themselves a treat in many different ways. I don't drink alcohol, and I rarely go out to eat, so treating myself to a nice latte once or twice a week is totally justified in my eyes. And yes I can make it at home, but actually it tastes better at the coffee shop.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Might as well just die then. Enjoy a $7 coffee now and then.

by Free-Gold 1 month ago

I never got into drinking coffee and haven't been to a coffee shop in forever but like you do realize that there's a lot of things on Starbuck's menu that aren't so simple to make at home. Not everyone just gets coffee & cream or a latte

by nels08 1 month ago

My job provides me with endless amount of free coffee.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

No

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Probably. Especially if you go to chain places. If I'm grabbing a coffee with someone it is nice to have a place to sit for a bit

by douglasarnulfo 1 month ago

While I do enjoy the cup my keurig makes, I also live right by a solid cafe that makes a mean vanilla latte And I'm not dropping thousands of dollars to make one at home when I can spend $4.5 for a 16oz

by Aware_Egg_315 1 month ago

We keep a Keurig at my job. Usually refillable pod instead of buying the disposable ones. A $5 can of coffee will last me about 3 weeks

by Anonymous 1 month ago

by LocksmithAmazing9309 1 month ago

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Place to meet people (wanna grab a coffee) that isn't a full-on meal, quick pick me up on the go, etc. it's not that deep

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Dunkin Donuts and McDonald's and the like just have regular drip coffee machines that you'd have at home. Starbucks actually grinds the beans to make your drink.

by Separate-Cry 1 month ago

That's an expensive gallon of milk

by Anonymous 1 month ago

You say that about any drink or food. Alcohol is cheaper at home but y'll still go to a bar. Smoothies are healthier and cheaper at home but man cleaning a blender is tough.

$.99 burned coffee at the gas station is the best

Food bought anywhere else but home is a waste of money. I just live off of insects and the neighbors pets for maximum cost saving.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

As a barista.. Yes, Starbucks specifically is way overpriced bc they can be. People have no idea what they want aside from their comfort, sugar bombs from these chain shops. If you're someone who has any depth of care in regards to the espresso shot itself, you're most likely not going to one of these shops. Authentic/single owned cafes are 100% worth it. People literally pay for soda with some pumps of syrup and cream in places where coffee is "forbidden" by most living there.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

A McDonald's coffee is 1€. Those fancy Starbucks drinks are a lot but they're not coffee.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

You see: I don't care if this coffee is inferior or more expensive, the only thing that matters is that I want to have coffee NOW, and I'm currently many kilometres away from home, and buying somewhere there is my only option.

by AlfalfaChance6961 1 month ago

When people buy coffee from Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts, etc. they're buying more than just the coffee. Each person will be different, but they're also buying aspects of the experience. Yes, at home the coffee costs less than a dollar, but at Starbucks someone else will make it for you.

by Rare-Engineering-780 1 month ago

I'm not driving somewhere for coffee when I can have it at home. But I'm a saver of money so I'm not going buy coffee from coffee shops. Occasionally I will buy a bag of Dunkin Donuts coffee to make at home because I really like DD coffee but not very often.

by Heber00 1 month ago

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I'll take issue with the word ‘anywhere'. My job has free coffee for customers, but since everyone I work with makes absolutely disgusting coffee, I've assigned myself that job. I always get the first cup, and it doesn't cost me a thing.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

It's all about two things: convenience and treat factor. I'm 100% with you on people who go like every single day, but life isn't min/maxing - gotta have little things you like

by brayan94 1 month ago

Yes. It is. I'll always make a cup in the morning at home. But if I get coffee out, it's to get something kinda fancy as a treat (no different than buying yourself a donut etc). OR, I am really desperate for some caffeine.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Coffee is a luxury item. It's price ultimately is irrelevant.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Making a pour over is an art. The ability to sample different varieties of beans and roasts without buying lbs of it is awesome. And having bean brewed at the perfect age after roasting … delicious. Yes, some of us will pay for quality and broadening the experience.

by braulioschinner 1 month ago

A latte that is 6-7 bucks is just two shots of espresso and milk. You can buy a whole gallon of milk for 5-6 dollars and espresso is dirt cheap. An industry-quality latte also requires a machine worth thousands of dollars, and a trained barista to make it. Costing high-end service by the price of the ingredients is idiotic.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Let's tart with that Starbucks doesn't make coffee, they make syrup water with a joint of coffee flavour and milk.

by Brendenmarquard 1 month ago

I have never had a homemade cup of coffee that tasted good. Percolators early on, any drip coffee, Mr. Coffee, and those Keurig cups all taste so metallic. I get mine at Dunkin or Wawa and not always great but tastes brewed, not rushed through and watery.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

LOL you're picked big chain coffee shops. Yea they are horrible, instant coffee is almost better than them. But good independent speciality coffee shop makes exceptional coffee. I make a pretty great flat white and latte at home but these places just have the science to a tee. Plus you're supporting a local business.

by vestaoreilly 1 month ago

Buying breakfast out is a complete waste of money, the breakfast cereal your eating out is soo much cheaper at home, and the milk you can get it in a gallon. Sure you need a bowl and a spoon, but you'll break even after 2-3 weeks. /s

by Anonymous 1 month ago

That's because you live in America. Come to Australia, we have one the best rated coffee's in the world. Coffee culture here is amazing. Starbucks is trash.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

They don't even make coffee how I like it. If I want a real fancy coffee for once with milk and all, I'm gonna walk in, see what milk they use and buy that, knowing it's more expensive, to treat myself. (Dairy alternatives)

by Anonymous 1 month ago

You can literally make anything at home for cheaper than buying it at restaurant/cafe. People buy them from those places because they like it and/or don't want to make it

by CoolKaleidoscope2175 1 month ago

You can say this about basically any type of food/ drink you can buy at a restaurant or shop. Just about anything you buy to consume can be made cheaper if you prepared it yourself at home.

However, when I'm out and about, it's nice to enjoy my walk or shopping with a good quality black coffee. Same for when traveling and you need your caffeine fix. There is definitely a place for these stores.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

by Longjumping-Top682 1 month ago

I will treat myself to a good cup of coffee from the dynamite local coffee shop now and again, but 97% of the time I make my coffee at home and bring it with me for the day. Even a cheap cup at like $2.50/day from a gas station, adds up quickly. That's like over $600/year. I know people who don't make a ton of money and they get $5 Dunkin drinks every day, it boggles my mind that they spend so much $ on coffee. That's well over $1K/year. If they make even $30, one whole paycheck per year is spent on expensive coffee drinks.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Dunkin medium original is 3 bucks (no frills)

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Sure. Next time I'm at work, and need a coffee, I'll just lose an hour of pay so I can burn at least $2 worth of gas to drive home, make coffee and drive back. Because that's definitely better than spending 5 minutes to walk across the street to McDonalds and spending $1.50 for coffee. Driving home to get coffee will cost me at least $17 (lost wages, fuel, and the coffee) and waste an hour of time, while going to McDonalds will cost me $3 in lost wages and coffee. And many people might still get paid for that time because it's only five minutes.

by hallebartell 1 month ago

What's cheaper, a $5 latte once a month or spending $100 on a single cup coffee maker and $30 box of coffee?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

i wouldnt say complete waste of money, sometimes it's convenience, and just wanting something different. but yeah i like to just brew my own and save money. altho i just spent almost $400 on a coffee maker so it needs to last me at least a couple years to make up the difference

Totally depends on where you are getting it. We have a local store here where refills are $1.60 up to 24 oz (and it's good coffee!). I did the math one time and it's cheaper to get a large quantity of that than make a pot at home.

by Ziemannguiseppe 1 month ago

I barely drink alcohol anymore, coffee is my daily vice and I love it. I love exercising and then heading to the cafe afterwards and having a yarn with the staff. It's awesome to walk in and have your coffee ready for you without having to ask. I love when I'm catching public transport and have a takeaway coffee while listening to an e-book and people watching. I love taking my daughter out for a fluffy at the cafe by the huge playground and hanging out with her with a coffee, and then having a run around. I love getting in my car on a beautiful Sunday and driving to a different cafe to get a coffee and have a yarn with the other people there with cool cars. I love that my wife works in a cafe and her colleagues are super chill, very cool, and give me free coffee. I love that I take a day off every month and have a brunch date at a cafe we've never been to. I love that I've traveled the world and have always been able to find good coffee. I understand your point if coffee is just a drink to you, but for some of us it's part of the culture... Our culture... Coffee culture. I'm not even joking.

Dunkin is way cheaper than Starbucks and most local shops. You can get a medium iced coffee for $3.50 which is the same size as a venti at Starbucks that costs like 5.50. It's a nice treat once a week for me to grab something like that and as a 2-3 cup a day drinker, that means 95% of my coffee consumption is from home.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

If your goal is just to deliver coffee into your system, then sure, but there is no comparison between your average home made coffee and a professionally made specialty coffee. I can also cook a steak at home, often a lot better than a restaurant, but when I go to a restaurant, I can be served, don't have to do anything, don't have to wash up, and it also can get out of the house.
