+34 I don't think people should have pets if they leave them home alone all day, amirite?

My cats entertain themselves more without me than they do with me.

Mine absolutely freaks out. Starts howling and flops over for belly rubs.

by Fun-Occasion 1 month ago

I was gunna say, i think some pets enjoy their personal space just as much as many humans do, and like having some quiet time to themselves.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Yeah I can tell my cats are annoyed when I'm home too much. They like their time to do whatever it is they do while I'm gone.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Yep, you know what my dog does when I'm at home? The same darned thing he does when I'm gone. Doggo loves those naps. 🤣🤷‍♀️

Cats are like teenagers. They want your money and food. Dogs are like toddlers

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Our cat always greets us when we come home though

by Anonymous 1 month ago

You could literally leave a cat alone for a week with extra food and water and litter boxes and your cat won't even know you were away

by MoistAspect6788 1 month ago

I think you need two cats, or the cat gets overly dependent. I always get a second cat, and I think it helps. They're definitely less needy when they have a friend, or even just a hugely irritating (to them) other cat.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

This. If I go on a long vacation (with a friend or sitter watching them), when I come back my cats won't leave me alone and get super stressed if I go in a room without them. That being said, I can leave them alone for most of the day and they are fine. They sleep and play with each other. But more than 24 hours is questionable.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

If I go on an extended trip, my cats will hide when my friend comes over to feed them. When I return home, I get the "Who the hell are YOU?" look.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

If your friend is coming over, they aren't being left alone

by MoistAspect6788 1 month ago

That is not true.

by erdmanesteban 1 month ago

I disagree with this. Husband and I went on holiday a couple weeks ago leaving my adult son in charge. He's good with them but he doesn't spend as much time with them as I do. When we got back, my older feline son followed me everywhere and was super clingy for weeks - still is in fact.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

That is completely untrue. Cats get very, very lonely, especially if they're on their own. That's why stray cats often form cat colonies. If you're gonna be gone for more than two days, you should definitely have a cat sitter come in just for the company. And if you're away eight hours a day, your cat should have another cat for a friend. People think cats are loaners and they're so not. And if your cat isn't somewhat excited to see you come home after you've been gone for a few hours or days, that says more about your relationship with the cat than about cats in general.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

It helps that you have two so they can keep each other company. I've definitely seen cats get separation anxiety if they are left completely alone all day.

by Clark63 1 month ago

lol my cats either entertain each other or sleep on the cat tree in my office. They like being in the room with me most days, but they don't need me.

by boyerjarvis 1 month ago

Are you supposed to be around them 24/7...? I know quite a few cats that definitely enjoy their space.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I work from home so I see what my cats do all day. It's mostly take a nap in my bed without me 😂

by SignalWeb 1 month ago

Exactly. Living their best life.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Yeah it's like OP is saying only people who are unemployed should have pets…. But also how are they paying for said pets atp¿

by Misaelmorissett 1 month ago

I finally get it. Maybe we shouldn't have pets and are instead supposed to be the pet. Quit your job and roam the streets with them. Eat what they eat and pee where they pee. Lol

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Seriously. My roommate and I have 4 dogs. They are ages 10-14. When we're not home they cuddle on the couch and snore. If we come home before they're expecting us they look more disturbed than appreciative.

by Negative_Paramedic 1 month ago

Came home after 6 hours today and my dog was asleep on the couch lol. I know he loves when I'm home, but I'm home with him most hours of the day. He just goes back to bed when I leave 😂

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Right. When my hound was a youngen she went to doggy daycare while I was at work and loved it. Now she's older and I just leave her home while I work because all she does is sleep in the morning/afternoon even if I'm home.

by Satterfieldelza 1 month ago

I work night shift, ten minutes from my house, if i were able to get a dog he would be sleeping most of the time i am gone. Like my cat was lonely when i worked long hours, so i got him a friend, now they entertain each other

by Anonymous 1 month ago

So do you not have pets, work from home, or not work?

by MeasurementKind8868 1 month ago

This is exactly my point. the cost for care is part of owning a dog. Dogs expenses don't end at food, water, and vet trips. It's a family member that's going to have unexpected expenses, and if you can't afford that, then you can't afford a dog.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

You forgot the 4th option: Not have pets. Cats are one thing, dogs are something else. I just lost my boy just 3 weeks ago and I won't get another one because the guilt of leaving him was too much. It's the price I pay until my life changes.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Pets? I think you mean dogs specifically. My cats and tarantulas are fine. They are not needy and neurotic.

by Complete_Emphasis 1 month ago

I'm quite intrigued by that pet combo, do your cats watch your tarantulas often? Or are they not interested and don't pay them much attention?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

The cats dont even know they exist, most tarantulas are essentially "pet holes" If its a burrower. If you have an active one, thats a male and they live like 3 yrs, females can live up to 40 yrs.

by Complete_Emphasis 1 month ago

40 years?!?!? I definitely did not know that

by kennediritchie 1 month ago

Exactly. That means dogs. I was in an apartment complex just walking down the hallway and I heard a dog barking and bark sounded worse than any bark I've ever heard. I feel for the people who live next to that tenant… they just don't care about the people around them at allllll.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Hello fellow cat and tarantula owner! My T is currently in her burrow phase until she molts, so I haven't seen her in a bit. Do your thing, girl!

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I miss my tarantulas. I called them my pet rocks. 🤣

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I've heard rose hairs being described as "fluffy pet rocks" lol

by Mysterious-Fig-778 1 month ago

My dog is home alone during work hours. The days I work from home it doesn't even feel like I have a dog, he just sleeps in my bed all day and he only comes out if he can hear me preparing food in the kitchen. He truely couldn't care less, aside from the snacks he gets.

by Alysson69 1 month ago

Dogs arent children. Why always that comparison? Get your dog a friend if you spend so much time outside the home

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Anthropomorphism is on the rise lately. I always feel the need to add "as an animal lover" when I disagree with these kind of takes or when people compare them to children/humans. They aren't. Their emotions and brains do not function like ours do

by Misaelmorissett 1 month ago

If it was a puppy, maybe. But leaving a full grown dog home alone while you're at the office is more like leaving a teenager at home. It's not a problem as long as you provide them food, water, and toys.

by kunzeangela 1 month ago

Well a kid isn't a dog or cat for one.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

He means dogs, he just didn't want to single them out. My cats are mostly quiet… people know that.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

It's pretty dumb tbh

by Anonymous 1 month ago

It depends on the pet. Some need a lot of attention and are miserable if left alone, some are just fine with being alone by themselves, some are recommended to be kept in groups and thus keep each other occupied when the human is away.

by baumbachkaylie 1 month ago

I'm a dogwalker in Manhattan. Lots of folks hire attention out…to me!

by Anonymous 1 month ago

lol my dogs sleep 90% of the day so I do not feel bad about leaving them for 8 hours

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Yeah, dogs need attention. But a lot of 'em can get by just fine with you gone most of the day so long as you accept that you're gonna need to set some time aside for them when you get home.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Yes dogs for sure but cats are fine to be alone all day.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Well. Pets are not "small children". They are usually able to walk and eat on their own and don't stick their paws into sockets.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Must be nice for the OP to be unemployed and to judge others for having jobs. Very privileged

by MeasurementKind8868 1 month ago

It is not a human right to own a dog. Yes it is legal to make it suffer by being alone, but that does not make it ok. Just, dont have a dog??

by InvestmentWhole 1 month ago

Yeah .. why give it shelter, food, safety, healthcare, and companionship if you can't be there 24/7. Just let it find it's own food and shelter and vet care on its own, you monsters.

‘All dog owners that have full time jobs should just collectively let their dogs free into the wild.' - OP

by giovannakessler 1 month ago

Meh. My dogs have water, access to outside, a buddy to goof around with, neighbors to bark at And they just sleep all day

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I work from home and this is exactly what my dogs do. Even when they have access to me all day.

by Excellent-Coyote3868 1 month ago

Same!

by Anonymous 1 month ago

It's more like leaving a self-sufficient child at home. It's probably better for the animals if they have a friend to be with but as long as they have water, and you get home in time to give them dinner at dinner time there really isn't an issue with it in my opinion

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Believe me, I work from home and my cat goes away and isolates for hours. He's fine lol.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Leaving your pets alone for 8-10 hours a day (factoring in commute) isn't crazy at all. Cats for instance are asleep for the majority of that time. People's only other option is to have a pet sitter for the majority of the day or simply not work. That's an impractical and unrealistic take to have.

by AdSure 1 month ago

There's also the option to not have a pet.

by ashlee06 1 month ago

But there's also the option to have pets

by Jaunita42 1 month ago

I agree. I have always wanted a dog, but haven't gotten one, because the dog would be alone for 10 hours a day. (work +commute time). I love dogs and do not have the heart to do that to one.

by Fresh-Software4513 1 month ago

Adopt an older dog that needs a home. They'll sleep the majority of those 10 hours anyway and be so grateful to see you when you get home.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

10 hours alone on a couch is better than 23 hours in a concrete kennel at the pound.

by Negative_Paramedic 1 month ago

Exactly.

by Patient-Audience 1 month ago

I am not going to say that this is bad or good, but just to share. I love dogs so much, we are a family who loves them and grew up with them. Then I became an adult, lived alone and decided to not get one even if I wanted it so badly and left and right I have people offering. My reason, the responsibility. To me it's just not having a pet at home to entertain you and guard your house. When I say I will get a dog, it will entail a lot of responsibilities for me. The cost, the vaccines, if it gets sick, take care of it, make sure they are taken care of. And I can't do that at the moment. I work 5 days a week 12 hours out of my house. I travel too. I can leave it to my sister but I don't trust her. Then I started working from home and when that one little guy I saw from a neighbor's store just curled up in that small space, I fell inlove and she gave him to me. Now we've been together for more than 3 years now. I get anxiety whenever I leave him alone. And now he gets two hooman, my husband and me! Just sharing

by Annual_Hat_3477 1 month ago

Big dogs need a lot of supervision. That I know from experience

by joanniewiegand 1 month ago

I'm retired. I rarely leave the house. I have a dog and a dog door. Where does my dog spend 95% of his time? Outside, sleeping. He knows when it's time to eat and go for a walk, then he wanders in and finds me for use of my thumbs. Occasionally he will need me to drive him to the vet because he's too young to get his drivers license.

by Working_Stock_5866 1 month ago

Are you suggesting that if you are home all day, your focus should be 100% on the dog, if not, then why would it be wrong to leave them alone for part of the day?

by Infamous-Act 1 month ago

I was left home alone as a child! As a 6yo. Enjoyed it more than with my parents at home with me.

by Time_Clue_3859 1 month ago

most pets just lounge. All animals sleep more than humans

by franeckiarlo 1 month ago

We call them family, but it's completely normal to leave them home alone for hours every day. If someone did that to a small child—left them alone in a house with no way to leave, no real interaction—people would be horrified. This is why I find the phrases "furkid" and "dog parent" very offensive. I get that life is busy, and people have jobs, but if someone doesn't actually have the time to be with their pet… should they have one? Depends on the pet. Solitary pets, such as cats, probably don't mind. Dogs, probably not.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I didn't let my children run around outside, climbing fences and chasing birds, but cats are very happy that way. My gerbils were perfectly happy with relatively little interaction with me. My fish really don't care so long as there's food and decent water quality. My dog, though, he loves to be with me. I have had to leave him for 6-8 hours a couple of times (attending a funeral once, another time going to court). He was OK but I'd hate to do it regularly.

by Kshlerincecil 1 month ago

Dogs definitely. Cats are a bit more chill, so as long as they have a friend, I wouldn't worry about them. I know there are birds that get stressed alone, but I also know that most rodents and reptiles don't care at all. So I agree in some cases, though not all.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I feel the same with pets that are kept in cages, it seems very cruel.

by Dry-Connection1894 1 month ago

I mean, dogs sleep for about 16 hours a day, I try to leave so sound and light on for my dogs if I'm gonna be gone long, but most of the time they're just sleeping, and they would probably prefer that than being stuck in a shelter their whole life or euthanized

by SpiteLegitimate 1 month ago

A pet isn't a child. Their needs are fundamentally different. And only really young children need constant supervision. Many types of pets wouldn't even want that level of interaction. And it's better for a pet to be alone 8 hours a day because their person works than to be alone forever because nobody adopted them.

by madelynokon 1 month ago

There's a lot of dogs at the shelter whose life would be a whole lot better if they had a home where they saw their humans every evening, all night, and every morning. Doggy doors and dog walkers help with mid day walks.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

My cat only finds me relevant when her food and water bowls are empty. Otherwise I initiate 99% of interactions lmao. I don't think my cat cares that I go to work as she's rather sleep under my bed or hide in the closet.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I agree. I had a coworker that had a big dog, living in an apartment and that dog was there at least 9 hours alone. I think that a couple of doors were closed too to keep the dog away from those areas, making the space even smaller. I am not even a dog person but I always felt bad for that dog.

by pollygoodwin 1 month ago

Same energy as ppl who want dogs bc they are cute but leave them in crate all day or outside in the yard to "explore". If you leave a high energy animal in crate or at home all day you shouldn't have animal. However there are some animals that enjoy the solitude and don't mind their owners being gone as much. I will acknowledge that side of the argument. In general animals have a level of certain needs that must be met and being a owner requires physical time!!

by ProtectionAfter3582 1 month ago

i dont think this is unpopular, its just ignored by those whom it applies to.

by Low_Membership_1969 1 month ago

Well yes, because if anyone actually took this stupid advice, there'd be thousands of cats and dogs and other animals on the street and without homes.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Pets aren't children. Puppies and kittens shouldn't be left unattended for hours, but adult dogs and cats aren't babies, or children.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Not unpopular for me. If I have a cat, I'd have 2. If I have a dog, I'd have 2 as well.

by Numerous_Toe 1 month ago

There are animals put down everyday because shelters can't find enough people to adopt them. Not just old, sick animals, but healthy young ones too. These animals don't need to live in a mansion with 24/7 attention, they just need a loving home. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

What's ypur opinion on pet fish and snakes?

by horacesteuber 1 month ago

As long as your dog is house trained and has free run not in a crate, they can easily be by themselves for up to 8 hours. I try not to leave my dog for that long, I hire a dog walker, but she can easily just sleep the entire time I'm not home

by MoistAspect6788 1 month ago

They aren't the same as human kids. They can entertain themselves

by jamir46 1 month ago

It entirely depends on the animal. Using your "small child" example, dogs and birds are very much like small children they need a lot of attention. Cats are more like teenagers. Yeah they need you but they also need their own space. Fish can easily be left alone as long as you feed them same with spiders and I think snakes (I've only owned cats and fish and have looked into rodents I don't know everything)

by Anonymous 1 month ago

but if someone doesn't actually have the time to be with their pet They don't have to. Animals can totally entertain themselves. Now it may be true for a young puppy, but once they are mature its totally fine. They just either sleep or chill out. They need some space too believe it or not.

by ServeAffectionate276 1 month ago

I can get this for some animals. But most don't mind a little alone time. Plus it's not like I can take a pet to work, the grocery store, restaurants or even on a walk depending on the animal.

by Donny17 1 month ago

Depends on the species. Many species you need to either be with them all day or give them a friend, but usually the friend solves it. For example, a lot of birds.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Let me see if my boss is ok with me taking my dogs to work, be back

by CapitalAmazing 1 month ago

We partially accept it because the alternative, at least in the US, is hundreds of thousands of animals languishing with even LESS human interaction in shelters and/or being put to death. Dogs also naturally sleep for up to 15 hours a day anyway, so while I obviously am against them being neglected, busy people can still have dogs as long as they prioritize them when they free to spend time with them.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I have cameras in my house so I can see that my dogs are sleeping all day. On my days off they do not deviate from this and continue to sleep all day.

by Mylene37 1 month ago

Meanwhile thousands of pets sit in concrete cells at shelters waiting to be adopted. I rearrange my schedule to spend as much time as possible with my dog and think this is ideal, but expecting ideal or nothing isn't the right answer. I'd rather see dogs fed, loved and with vet bills paid but left at home during the day so their humans can work and take care of other things than be stuck at a shelter.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

For my dog, it's better than the shelter, where he spent 23.5 hours a day stressing, and 30 minutes outside. Now, he gets 3 full days a week dedicated to making sure he's happy, fulfilled and enjoying his day. The other 4 days, I spend my non-working hours with him, making sure he doesn't have any pent up energy or anxiety while he is alone. I'd love to quit my job, but I do need to provide food, a warm home, and entertainment for him and myself.

by Paucekdoris 1 month ago

Ok, but you can't equate an animal to an actual human being though

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Dogs can't turn on electronics or burn the house down or do all sorts of dangerous things kids can do..... and my 12-year-old husky has no problem sleeping away the time until I come home. Obviously he gets lots of walks and love, and trips to the dog park, etc.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

So I'm not allowed to have pets because I need to leave the house to survive? It's not just unpopular, it's inconsiderate.

by Brekkegennaro 1 month ago

Pets are not children. They are not human. There solved it for you.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I have more issues with call center jobs where people are expected to make over 100 phone calls a day in 8 hours than I do an animal sitting at home in AC without having to worry about bills/groceries/savings/etc. Pets have it so much better us in so many ways.

by Hot-Instruction9250 1 month ago

Only stay at home moms and the homeless get dogs. Got it. Truly awful take.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I agree 100%. Yet when I call animal control on my sister's roommate's cousin that they're abusing their betta fish because I heard they work a 9-5, I'm "harassing" them and "abusing emergency resources"? I just want recognition for the fact that I'm selflessly not owning a pet. Is that too much to ask? I've not adopted 5 dogs and 5 cats already this year. Yet I'm never rewarded for my incredible restraint and willpower.

by Designer-Catch 1 month ago

LOL ok buddy

by littlebill 1 month ago

I see what you are saying but it's unrealistic to stay home all day or hire a sitter(?). Though I do believe you shouldn't have just one pet, for this exact reason and I (personally) am not a fan of people the kennel there dogs. To me it seems like a rather poor existence for them. They are in the kennel during works hours and while you sleep. I personally couldn't do it. (But that's why I am a cat person.) As for the second pet, they need a friend. Someone to play with. (Within their age range)

by ConsciousInstance 1 month ago

I feel like this is only true for dogs, I got my cat another cat to entertain themselves while I am gone but I am home most of the time anyways.

by Esperanzagibson 1 month ago

I hate people that never or rarely let their dogs in the house. They're social animals, like us. They're not meant to just stay outside alone all day just because you think they're "dirty". They need love and attention just like we do.

by Beginning-Plan5819 1 month ago

My cat is probably glad to see me go away for a bit every day, but I will say I personally don't agree with extended time away. I can't leave him a full day with no interaction. Might be factually wrong, but the image of him even thinking nobody is coming back makes me want to cry lol. It's been too consistent of a routine for 5 years and since he was a kitten to suddenly leave him hanging out of nowhere.

by Otiliagibson 1 month ago

Quality time- not quantity . Also pets can be happy. Longer then 10 hours is too much. I'd say longer then 8 get a dog walker. But less then 8 with quality time in morning and evening/ walks/ cuddles/ treats/ time outside and not in the kennel/ it's ok

by Soggy-Captain 1 month ago

My cat lets me come & go as I please as long as I leave him enough food to nosh during the day. He sleeps next to me every night, so if he was lonely, that makes up for it.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

People need to work to live and take care of their pets. You think they need a stay at home parent?

by Traditional_Bus 1 month ago

Depends entirely on the animal. I have a greyhound, who will sleep most of the day whether or not I'm home, and only wants a couple of short walks each day. She enjoys a cuddle, but also likes her own space so doesn't live in my shadow when I'm home. I'm confident that she's perfectly happy with the arrangement. On the other hand, leaving a super active dog like a kelpie home alone all day without someone to play and engage with them, might be incredibly unfair. Same if my hound had issues with separation anxiety.

by Salvatore91 1 month ago

by Fearless-Wedding-710 1 month ago

Asian breed are a huge factor here, I had a neighbor who had a young husky and that guy worked more than 8 hours a day out of the house so that husky was just constantly destroying the blinds and yelling stuck at home alone. I have a 16-year-old dog and sometimes I will leave him alone for long periods of time not by choice. I prefer to take him with me but if it's too hot or too cold to take him somewhere then I know that he'll be fine at home just sleeping all day.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I agree to a degree. Some people live in small apartments with big dogs and I never understood that, especially if they get them bark collars and rarely take them out. It seems cruel to do that to a larger animal

by Anonymous 1 month ago

My cat is more clingy now that I've been working from home. The first six years before covid, I was going into work every day, leaving around 7am, getting home around 6:30pm. I'd get home, she'd be happy to see me for food and then she'd go so whatever it was she wanted. 5 years of working from home since covid and if I'm gone for a few hours during the day she spends several hours glued to my side. Hell, if I go out for 20 minutes on my break to get coffee she's greeting me at the door. Don't get me wrong, I love how happy she is to see me and how much she wants to be next to me. But she's definitely less independent than she was 5 years ago.

by Forsaken-Purple-7086 1 month ago

I agree with several other replies that most cats 100% don't need or want your attention 24/7. So I'll assume we are really talking about dogs. I often dog sit and can confirm that, even when I'm in the same room with the dogs, they generally sleep most of the day. Some breeds need more activity and stimulation than others. I think, as long as you are providing them with enough attention and exercise when you are home, you should not feel guilty about a normal workday. Also, given that every dog I've ever had was a rescue, to me, it's more of a comparison between the life I can give them where they have shelter, food, vet care, attention vs a short life of living on the streets, starving, being injured, cold, etc. If we lived in a world where the only way to get a dog or cat was to have one bred for you, then it might be a more selfish situation.

You're right, we should just leave them in the shelters instead.

Ahh yes so we think dogs are so horrified by being alone for 8 hours a day that good dog owners should not adopt dogs and let them get euthanized?

Dogs and children should never be compared. Dogs do not NEED to be out of the house in grocery stores, malls, restaurants, work places etc. they want to be outside. Leaving children home alone is so dangerous and neglectful…making the comparison is asinine.
