+48 "Be better" is the worst phrase in the world. amirite?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

This isn't an unpopular opinion. Be better, OP.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Nah. It's unpopular. "We've always done it this way" is the worst phrase in the world 😂

I personally sick of hearing "if you know, you know"

Same. Like 'Git Gud' from the Dark Souls community.

"Be Best"

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Isn't that the point? You say "be better" when someone does something beneath themselves. Sometimes people need a kick in the ass..

by monty56 1 month ago

I agree completely, so I say to give them a kick in the arse, not look down on them. Imagine it would genuinely work better just telling them they're being an idiot and to shush.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

So a teacher to a student who consistently comes to class without their book or their pencilcase, they should kick the student's arse?

by DizzyBid 1 month ago

When a reply starts with "So...", you can tell that a deliberate misinterpretation designed to put words into your mouth will follow.

by Stammphilip 1 month ago

Well if they didn't mean it literally, then an example of a figurative ass kicking is saying 'be better', lol

by monty56 1 month ago

"Be better" feels like a figurative report to HR if I'm honest.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

You're the one that equated "be better" with kicking someone's arse. Do better.

by Stammphilip 1 month ago

Hence 'be better' . Be better than what you have been.

by DizzyBid 1 month ago

So telling someone they can do better is condescending but "Shut up, idiot!!" isn't somehow LOL?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Thanks OP. I absolutely hate it too.

by larry52 1 month ago

It's "Do better"..... Do better...

by Anonymous 1 month ago

they aren't the same thing

by True_Conference 1 month ago

I say be better. But I say it in a condescending way.

by Rigoberto76 1 month ago

Yup, I hate this one. It's insanely condescending and often used without stating what needs to be done better. It just projects such a weird sense of implied moral superiority I can't stand it. There are a lot of people who need to be or do better, but telling them in such a way isn't going to convince them to right their wrongs and be a better person.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Maybe it's because I'm English and the phrase is just so deeply American, but it just makes me roll my eyes every time I see it. Possibly true, I do usually default to calling someone a nonce

by Cordellfeeney 1 month ago

The point of it is to be condescending and make you sound superior to others. It's being used to convey that on purpose. This isn't an unpopular opinion, you're accurately understanding the phrase.

by No-Alps5646 1 month ago

Be best

by FineChampionship2076 1 month ago

Is that not the point? Don't people say it just to be an asshole?

by Usual_Junket_1948 1 month ago

It's supposed to be condescending

by Anonymous 1 month ago

THIS! ...is something I also can't stand.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Sounds like someone hears this often and should maybe, idk…be better

by Own-Worry 1 month ago

>> you don't come across like you watch Taskmaster and drink Brewdog. what does this mean?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Yeah I don't get this either. Random.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

It's not because your English. I'm American and it sounds exactly the same way to me. Arrogant and condescending. I never heard this stupid phrase before our "First Lady of the night" started saying "be best".

by No_Resort3885 1 month ago

Its condescending but when I see it used, it's typically the actual solution too.

by Ikihn 1 month ago

I've seen it used by middle aged men when people criticise football players. Lost all meaning to me at this point.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Yeah those people don't get it. It's supposed to be used when someone wants a result without putting no effort in to improve themselves, gets good advice in how to do better in detail, ignores it and whines again. Dunno what they're doing.

by Ikihn 1 month ago

What's Taskmaster got to do with a saying you hate for being "deeply American"?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Maybe it's where I'm from and it's used differently but, be better is usually used when someone has done something pretty bad or has continued negative behavior. Being said directly to them.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Joey swoll disagree.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Pursue Betterment, actually the worst phrase is "tell me how you really feel."

by Breitenbergdarr 1 month ago

"Be best" is infinitely worse.

by Shayneberge 1 month ago

There's a philosophy book, My Ishmael by Dan Quinn, that covers the concept of "being better" and how useless that sentiment is. It hasn't worked in at least 10,000 years and all these failed societies based their laws and beliefs on humans "being better" We're humans. We are what we are. If we worked in that box we'd build a better society -- but we won't. We'll never do better.

by Ok_Gazelle_9641 1 month ago

Thing is the phrase is intended that way. It's ot meant to be a compliment

by josefahaag 1 month ago

I prefer get gud.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I agree with this.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Be the Best.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Taskmaster is a great show

by Ok-Patient 1 month ago

In what way is this phrase "deeply American"?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Americans do something we don't, argue without insults.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Sounds like you need to be better.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I say it in a condescending way. Be better.

by Rigoberto76 1 month ago

Think this is one of those cases where you put an emotional load in words that may not have been intended, I know I'm guilty of doing that myself. What I mean is that I doubt that every time "Be Better" is being said, it implies that the person who wrote it or said it thinks they are better.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I don't think You are looking down on someone when.yoi tell them to do better. It has nothing to.do with whoever is telling it to me, and everything to do with me.

by Strict_Cause 1 month ago

Did you get featured on the latest Joey Swole video or something?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

There is always room for improvement

by Anonymous 1 month ago

i disagree be better is a good goal and something 99 of people should do. people are the worst SERIOUSLY BE BETTER!

by Some-Investigator629 1 month ago

I only use it when I want to be condescending. Sometimes people behave in such a way that the only proper response is to be condescending.
