Pandas actually mate fine in the wild. It's just that habitat destruction and human poaching have wiped out almost all wild pandas.
by Anonymous1 month ago
The big reason pandas struggle to survive in the wild isn't because they're not built to survive it's because humans are messing with their way of life. If pandas truly were incapable of surviving in the wild they would've gone extinct or evolved a long time ago. They struggle to survive in the wild because humans are messing with them by destroying their environments and their natural way of life

It's like having your house be set on fire by some asshole, and OP is just standing there saying you're not allowed in the homeless shelter because you can't live in the ashes.

Would you say the same for certain human beings? Without certain medical services some people literally couldn't continue living.

Yes
by Anonymous1 month ago
Humans...are not pandas. You understand this, yes?
by No_Alternative_49791 month ago
Obviously, but OP is using the same argument eugenicists use to justify killing humans. People take care of pandas because there's general value to life, and biodiversity is important.
by Anonymous1 month ago
See I completely agree with that. And when you consider a lot of what threatens wild pandas is because of actions done by humans, I think we owe them a little bit of care at this point
by No_Alternative_49791 month ago
Sadly true.

By OP's logic, these humans are also evolutionary dead ends and drain millions each year in medical resources. Should they just cease to exist as well?
by rebeka721 month ago
This has nothing to do with care or not, I'm just being pragmatic. People who need long term medical services due to chronic illness are just a drain on society and nothing else. They're not even cute to look at, they're just depressing and bog down the spirits of everyone nearby. If they're allowed to reproduce their offspring will likely greet the same fate creating even more suffering. So why are these people being kept alive instead of pandas, who at least provide some form of entertainment and make others happy?
by rebeka721 month ago
It's not up to me to dictate what others can and cannot do.

they are. alot of animals give back to their surroundings humans just take and take.

they barely reproduce because they're in captivity, they're in captivity because humans destroyed most of their habitats.

It is true that they will meet extinction without human intervention but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be helping this species survive.
by Anonymous1 month ago
Not an unpopular opinion. An uneducated one.
by GlitteringRead1 month ago
We as a species have the capability and resources to keep them alive. We have entire areas and professions dedicated to it. This is literally enough reason to sustain them. If we can, we should. Letting something go extinct we have the resources to not let that happen is insanely dumb.

Why let any type of life extinct?! You monster !!!!

How did they survive before human intervention?
by Anonymous1 month ago
Barely, all it would take is one bamboo targeting pathogen and they'd go extinct anyway. That's what happens when you get too ecologically specialized.
by Both-Argument1 month ago
oh yeah unpopular opinion right here. and when people ask where the pandas went blame the humans for letting them go extinct. like tf is this opinion?
by Anonymous1 month ago
any reason why you apply this only to Pandas?

Let humans go extinct while we're at it
by Anonymous1 month ago
If nature had its way, they'd be thriving. Humans are the cause of their problems, not nature.
by Anonymous1 month ago
Plenty of animals have had their habitats destroyed, but they adapt, wolves, raccoons, even cockroaches. Pandas, on the other hand, refuse to eat anything but bamboo, barely reproduce even in ideal conditions, and can't survive without human babysitting. If they're this dependent on us, are we really '‘saving'' them, or just putting them on life support indefinitely?"
by madisonschroede1 month ago
I explain this point to people all the time. To the person arguing that pandas are threatened by humans, it is not true. Opposite rather. Humans are keeping them alive. Biggest reason they are threatened are because the carnivores with a carnivore's digestive system that eat plants

They're too cute to let go extinct
by Fine_Amphibian1 month ago
On one hand I get it. Emotions aside, theyre not intelligent animals and they really seem to struggle against existing. But if we are gonna have zoos, then I dont see an issue with zoos having pandas. Sure, theyre pretty much mostly alive in zoos. But if something happens and all the wild elephants or giraffes or anything else had all the animals in the wild die off, I dont think many people would be cool with allowing the ones we have to die off. We have to have zoos keepers take care of them as well. Its also worth pointing out that the "if it was up to nature" argument only holds up if you ignore humans being a part of the problem. One of the reasons they do things like eat bamboo instead of meat is beleived to be because they were chased out of their natural habitats by poachers. Which is one of the big reasons they were going extinct. It also forced them into areas where their normal prey didnt live. So they started eating bamboo because there was plenty of it around. So if it was up to nature and not humans they probably wouldnt be in the predicament they are in.

I will add the point that I find it odd how we are constantly told not to play god or interfere with wildlife and that nature is simply supposed to take its course. So why doesn't this apply to animals like the panda? Why are they the exception that we can play god with? OP is right. They would go extinct without us, meaning their strand of evolution has failed. If they can't adapt, then they should die out like the billions of other species before them that also couldn't adapt. Weakening the gene pool doesn't seem like something nature intended to happen
by Clair521 month ago
Because it's humans that already caused them to head towards extinction. You can't cause something then say we wont interfere- we already got this far by interfering
