I don't mind a TV screen with the volume down with a sports game on or something. So you can check up on the score and have a visual distraction. For many people it can make the workout easier and it provides something to focus on. But I do agree about the loud music. Sometimes it can be so loud it overpowers what I'm playing my own earphones. It's 2025 there's no reason why people need public music and don't have their own earphones anymore.

It's 2025 there's no reason why people need public music and don't have their own earphones anymore. If I went into a grocery store or a restaurant and they didn't have any music playing at all, it would feel very strange. Music in the background fills in the gaps in sound and can make places feel more welcoming. And I don't want to walk around with headphones on. I like being spatially aware. Removing my ability to hear what's happening around me doesn't jive with wanting to be aware of my surroundings. I don't even own a pair of headphones that I take outside of my home.

In a store, I totally get it and I actually enjoy the music there while shopping. But in a gym where multiple people are lingering in one often crowded space for fairly long periods of time, everyone has different music styles and tastes that motivates them. Some don't want music at all and others may prefer a podcast. Others may want silence. It's not really fair to loudly blast music that overpowers everything else, so loud it may even overpower personal headphones, in particular if it's a specific style or genre that some people may hate.
