Old Video Games Aren't Better, You're Just Nostalgic, amirite?
by ProfessionalComb1 month ago
I prefer ridges and veins

A lot of why people like older games is because the developers had a ton of passion and put their everything into that game, which does in fact make it a better game than some of the slop coming out today.
by Anonymous1 month ago
Some people actually feel that older games are better and that's perfectly fine. You don't really get to dictate why someone has a certain preference even if you don't agree with it.
by Ok-Policy86871 month ago
Yeah I do! People with preferences have them because they're losers!

That's true in some cases, but not all. Play a Madden from the last 10 years and then play any Madden from the ps2 era and tell me theyre not better games
by Anonymous1 month ago
Bro hasn't played Chrono Trigger.

I bought this game CIB on the SNES (collect a ton of old games) about ten years ago. Never got to it until last year. Honestly one of the best gaming experiences I have ever had
by Big_School10331 month ago
It's my uncle's favorite game.
by clementinagreen1 month ago
If even your first paragraph were true, there would have been a wellspring of retro style games being pumped out for the last decade. In general: your statement is as closed-minded as the one you're opposed to. How about: there are some great games in all eras.

Wrong. They are better. DOOM is still peak shooter and Halo CE will always hold a special place in my heart.

Doom 1 and 2, and all the add ons/variations is on Xbox now. Been playing my way through it for ages now and still not done. Definitely stands the test of time.

Diablo 2 is leagues better than 3 or 4. It's not nostalgia, it is what it is.

Sorcs everywhere. One barb with max BO

Just in time for the guy with an anti perfect hoto to ruin it

Diablo 2 is the worst experience I had playing Diablo next to the original. People really have nostalgia glasses on every turn.
by Anonymous1 month ago
A good game stands the test of time. There are tons of them. No nostalgia needed.

The last Metroid is in captivity, the galaxy is at peace. Cue music*🎶

Even games like Metroid zero mission and fusion are over 20 years old. Old is relative lol.

Alot of the things you complain about are things we didn't complain about, the controls didn't feel clunky or weird that's just how it was, Going back after using the systems we have now.. sure they are super clunky and even awkward, all we have now is just a refinement of that. But throw a controller into somomes hands that never plays games and it still feels clunky and wierd to them. But what I miss about big games is the passion and they weren't these massive titans we have now. So to get that nostalgic feel of people making games to just make games 99% of the games I buy are indie.

When i was 5 I saw super mario bros for the first time and got super mario world for christmas. By the time I was 9 mario 64 came out. By 14 it was GTA3. It was very cool to witness how everything changed

You are just generalizing in very lazy ignorant way
by hoppegreta1 month ago
It's not nostalgia. I didn't even grow up playing a lot of older games and I still have tons more fun playing an actual well-made game from the 90s or 00s rather than an unfinished, buggy, microtransaction-filled cashgrab "AAA" game that was released in this decade.

You should search youtube for "avowed vs oblivion" Oblivion had full detailed schedules for every single npc and logarithmic dialogue where if you force different npcs to interact, they would have dialogue based kn their characters and in game events

It's apparent you keep waking up on the wrong side of the bed every morning. Who are you to dictate someone's preferences?
by Anonymous1 month ago
Better graphics with a copy and paste storyline does not make it a better game.
by Real-Joke97991 month ago
Play Marvel Ultimate Alliance (2006) and then play Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 (2019) and try to tell me the older game isn't objectively better.
by Anonymous1 month ago
Depends. I'd much rather play THPS2 over THPS5
by Key_Leg5241 month ago
I'd say that's maybe true in general if you go back far enough because of the limitations imposed by technology at the time, but that hasn't really been an issue in a while. If someone can recommend a better tactical RPG than Tactics Ogre or FFT from the last 20 years, please do. Triangle Strategy is about on par in terms of gameplay, but I haven't seen much else that comes close.

I just wanna be able to buy a game and play it. I'm the kind of person that still likes to buy physical games, but even with discs you still have to download a bunch of crap
by Anonymous1 month ago
Define old. Metroid zero mission is now 21 years old and is still my favorite 2D Metroid and one of my favorite MVs.
by Anonymous1 month ago
They may not have been better but they sure as hell didn't have as many issues

I'd agree with some games. I can't stand N64 controls or graphics, and a lot of PS1 games aged very poorly and are carried a lot by sentimentality. It feels like you're talking about flagship/AAA games, and them being bigger is often such a problem now that many games don't make it to release, or take studios down with them if they aren't successful enough. They're also often insanely greedy and disrespectful of your time, and because they have to answer to investors in suits now more than ever, they are often joyless grinds. Forza Motorsport and Gran Turismo have been so awful for so long, that when I want to enjoy a console racing game, I crank up an old Xbox 360 that I purchased SPECIFICALLY to play Forza Motorsport 3 and 4 on.

I think that is with most things though, like music, movies, video games, life in general.

I still play Doom II wads. Fight me.

Depends on the game. But I agree somewhat. Games that depended on cutting edge graphics to sell themselves are pretty bad now. But generally, I think older games have much better writing and themes that took more risks. Some older games I still think are fantastic: Fallout 2, almost all Lucas Arts adventure games, Transport Tycoon, Knights of the Old Republic.
