Crayons are an underappreciated art medium, amirite?
by Anonymous1 week ago
Because oil pastel exists. It is much softer and richer in colors. The technique is the same as with wax crayons, but it is much more pleasant to use.

Depends on what and how you draw. If you draw flat figures with simple coloring, you can probably use crayons succesfully. If you draw in a more academic technique, then crayons are a pain in the ass. Why torture urself and not use more easy in use materials.

Crayons mostly suck balls as a medium. That's why. It's patchy, it's prone to unwanted texture, sharpening is a bitch, it's too short after you've sharped, it breaks easily, it's super sensitive to any bumps or textures under the page. There's really nothing a crayon in good for except looking like crayon and making sure kids can't stab each other

I definitely agree, there alot of crayon brands that are absolute garbage quality, Liquimark, CraZart, the infamous Roseart, their stuff is absolute trash.

Crayons are basically just cheaper more annoying to use oil pastels, and pastel art is beautiful

All of my kids drawings are on the fridge, so I would disagree.

I appreciate all of my nephew's drawings of random shapes and lines! And eventually he'll start making some that vaguely represent real people and objects which will also be pretty cool!

I mean you kind of answered this question for yourself. Crayons ARE a respected art medium, it's just that when they are used to make professional art they are usually called pastels. Crayons are just a cheaper, kid friendly version of pastels, which is why pastels are used by artists because they can get better results with pastels.

Crayons are the worst medium, maybe only second to Roseart markers.

Would you also agree that crayons are a heavily underappreciated source of nutrition?

Anything can be used for art, however someone is going to work with what's easier and better for them, crayons aren't always the best choice for most, we have way better options out there

I don't know about being an art medium, but they sure are an underappreciated snack

I hate the unevenness of crayons

You can definitely make good art with them and theyre a good budget option, but i think its just that for serious art pastels are higher quality and easier to use
