+29 Sobriety without AA, amirite?

by Anonymous 4 hours ago

There's actually little evidence to show AA is effective compared to regulated mental health treatment. Obviously, if it works for someone, that's what's important for them. But, it's totally reasonable that someone could find what they need without it. Good for you, however you're managing to live well!

I never understood why someone would join a cult or a form of religion to get sober. Especially one that tells them they're an addict for life and no matter how long they go they'll only ever always be an addict.

Good for you, man (and I mean that sincerely!) It's not a very unpopular opinion though; I think even the most die hard AA apologists would admit that there are some lucky few who can get to sobriety without AA. But that's not the majority. The vast, vast majority of people need a lot of help— including admitting that they are powerless over their addictions

If you're still drinking beers, that's not "sobriety"

by Anonymous 2 hours ago

That's not my point. I'm not claiming to be sober. You can do what I'm doing without drinking a few beers every now and then. Although it's probably been 7 or 8 months since I last had a beer so I guess you could say I am at the moment, but that title is not important to me anymore .

Lots of types of sobriety. You don't get to define someone else's sobriety. They are living a happier, more fulfilled life, which seems like sobriety to me.

Quite literally the definition of sobriety but you do you.

Haha well call it whatever you want. I spent years in meetings because I was told that was the only way I could stay sober and I believed it, but it never sat right with me due to other obstacles I've overcome by using my willpower. I also stayed in it because I built a community there and there was comfort in having all of my friends in the same rooms dealing with the same thing. But I also saw 80% of those people go out eventually. It's really not that hard to understand

Is it that hard to understand that your path wouldn't work for most people and that many people rely on that sense of community and comfort for their sobriety?
