+90 The education system should require everyone to complete college-level math, amirite?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

And how is combinatorics and advance geometry going to help the average person? And if that is going to be taught, then do we just add another year to high school to make time for all that? Or do you just plan on somehow fitting it in?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

True enough, the reason I asked how it would help the average person, is because OP seems to think it will. Even so that still doesn't mean learning college-level math is worth it, if you don't add more time to teach, then they either have to drop something they teach now, or make it so there is less time for that, which I don't see how will help anyone.

Learning discrete math, advanced probability, and logic is way more useful to the real world than the math you learn in high school.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yes, that is something you can and do use, and I don't think taking time away from that to be able to fit in college-level math is worth it at all. Plus without a good foundation to build upon it will just be harder to build something meaningful and stable.

Nah.

I'm pretty sure people are graduating high school not even being able to do multiplication and division. Not sure where you're getting pre calculus as the minimum.

by Powerful-Abalone 1 week ago

Huge L take. We don't need more people working to be able to process numbers. Those things aren't coming up in daily life. Anything past honestly algebra I don't see coming up in daily life. I got a degree in computer science and even that I haven't seen anything besides calculus. We need more time spent on making people adult ready. Teaching them how our economic system, insurance, legal rights, human rights, etc etc not more time on math

by Anonymous 1 week ago

The fact that you think math is "processing numbers" proves OP's point. And either you found your degree in computer science in a cereal box, or you don't have a degree in computer science but went to some sort of coding school. Computer science is math. Any program worthy of the name will have lots of math classes in the first semester alone.

no. complicated math just goes over my head

by koelpindavid 1 week ago

nah, theres way more important classes that are not only more important, but actually teaches useful skills. those should be mandatory.

Real analysis is crazyyy you got me up to vector

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Not many people who have the ability to do that stuff are willing to be high school teachers.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

This is horrible. Most people will never use high school level math and as someone that used to be a tutor, some people just can't math.

by richiemarks 1 week ago

some people just can't math. Would love to hear more on that. Nowadays maths can be made very concrete thanks to computers. As a tutor I always find a way to show how maths is useful in everyday life. With that being said, I might have been lucky,l with my mentes (university students) hence I am curious to hear your stories.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Most people will never use literary analysis either, but that's a big part of High School English.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Most people will never use high school level math I'm sure they'll "use" history or literature. School is not (only) about immediate practical usefulness

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Some people can't math? Big if true. Apart from dyscalculia which isn't that common.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I just think there are more bad teachers than students who actually can't do Math. Just because people can do Math doesn't mean they can teach it. It is absolutely a skill you can develop. Especially if you have the right guidance. Medical stuff excluded. Source: Myself

Is the teacher any good? I have met way more terrible teachers than students who actually can't do it. No, not lack of trying per se but lack of interest. Couldn't do Math till I actually got interested in it. Cos I would zone out. Also it takes too much effort to do it if you don't care about it. Cos you need to practise.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

As someone who hated math and was very bad at it, pls don't.

? they are not sure what op is on about. i learned this in school

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I agree. But I also think algebra should start right around 2nd grade. And all of it should be taught on a calculator.

by Jeffereywillms 1 week ago

But you're not going to have a calculator with you whenever you need one! - every math teacher before 2010. Boy, did that call that wrong, or what?

by padbergkade 1 week ago

Just forget your phone for a second. You can buy a calculator that does differential equations for under $40 now.

by Jeffereywillms 1 week ago

You also have a dictionary with you at all time. Do you need to consult it every time you read something not meant for 7 years olds? The point is being able to think.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Isn't that what maths in practice basically is? Simplifying more complicated maths into practical knowledge that is beneficial in everyday life

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Huh? But I couldn't even grasp pre-algebra :(

by Arielcorwin 1 week ago

Not all high school programs require going all the way to precalc, and many people go beyond that in high school "College math" is a meaningless term. Colleges teach many disciplines and levels of mathematics, there is no one "college level math"

Yesterday was yet another day that I survived without using Pythagoras' Theorem.

by rueckeraudreann 1 week ago

The education system should be freaking cancelled once and for damn all.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I agree. "Not good at math" people are failed by poor one size fits all teaching methods. But to be fair in highschool our geometry/trig class was more proof based and conceptual then pre calc. Also AP calc didn't have much in the way of proofs but it in itself is more conceptual idk.

Critical thinking is better learned through literature imo

by btowne 1 week ago

I agree. We can make time for this by spending less time on literature.

Agree 100%
