+38 If you were born before Sep. 16, 1983, your birth is closer to WWII (Pearl Harbor) than to today. amirite?

So many mind blowing facts boil down to "time moves at 1 second per second"

by Annabelldouglas 1 week ago

Every minute, 60 seconds passes in Africa.

Only locally.

All of the facts designed to make me feel old still don't make me feel as old as just being told I'm 35.

by jakob21 1 week ago

Don't worry — now that you've crossed the threshold, you'll never not feel old again. I'm 42, born shortly before the magic threshold in OP, and just kinda mentally shrugged when reading it.

Dude, if you start at date and find out how much time has passed... that much time has passed since date

FYI, WW2 did not start - or end - with Pearl Harbor. Not even close. In fact, two full years into the war.

by Deep-Hunter3622 1 week ago

Americans have this blindspot for that fact that they basically didn't give a damn about their allies for years, right up until it directly affected them, then suddenly they believed they should be running the show and everyone else should lump in too.

by Deep-Hunter3622 1 week ago

This is pretty ignorant of US involvement in WWII prior to officially entering the war, such as the Neutrality and Lend Lease Acts, Japanese oil embargo, etc. FDR and by extension the American government were supporting the Allies way before Pearl Harbor and not "just sitting back"

by Former_Cod 1 week ago

But it took until they got a bloody nose from Pearl Harbour before they decided to send their boys to die in Europe. The Commonwealth had no choice in the matter. We couldn't just sit back and watch it happen. Our men and women were pried from our homes and forced to shed our blood for England. They flew their flags, but it was Canadian, Australian, Irish, Scottish, and Indian men and women on those boats to reclaim Europe. And our blood flooded those fields since 1939.

You could have picked September 2, 1945, the day the Japanese surrendered because that was the last day WWII was active.

by Wrong-Hat 6 days ago

less popularly known than Dec. 7th 1941 In the USA perhaps. Dozens of us are not from there.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Using Pearl Harbor as a stand in for WWII is kinda like using the year 1911 as a stand in for the 1900s. If you want to make meaningful comparisons, you should pick a date on the end of the time period. If you want to compare to Pearl Harbor, just compare to Pearl Harbor, drop the WWII.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Yes, a lot of the world wouldn't know the date of pearl harbour. Far more people would know when WW2 ended or at least have a rough idea. But the date chosen is completely arbitrary anyway so none of this really matters

by Anonymous 6 days ago

I'll be obstinate for you. I'm on your side haha

by Both_Thanks_8633 6 days ago

Look, what happened before the US intervened is irrelevant because it was boring and a bunch of white flags. So only Europeans would care about it.

I was born September 24th 1983 .... Guess I'll have to wait a few days.

Time really said: "blink twice and it's been four decades.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

July 4, 1983. Also, my grandfather was stationed on the USS Arizona.

Interesting. Out of curiosity, what was the name of your first pet?

by Friendly_Extreme 6 days ago

It's been true for me for a long long time. i was born 10 years after the end of that war. My dad fought in that war (and Korea, and Vietnam).

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Why would you use an event in the middle of the war but not its midpoint to count though?

by Anonymous 6 days ago

I know, when I was born it was just 19 years after the end of WWII

by Gullible_Owl913 6 days ago

Do your math again

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Damn just missed that mark by a few weeks 10.2.1983 ironically that was my original projection for my birthday.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

It's one of these variants of "We're closer to 2040 than we are to 1995" or "We're approaching the midpoint between 2000 and 2050"

Welcome to 2021 when I realized on the 80th anniversary of Pearl Harbor that I was over 40, and also that 9/11 was about to be closer to Reagan's shooting than to the present.
