+82 Wearing pajama-like clothes in public (schools, restaurants, stores, offices...) isn't "self-expression", it's just lazy and disrespectful. amirite?

by grayce57 1 week ago

Ive just never seen someone in pajamas and been so self obsessed to think they wore them to disrespect me lol. Seems like a wild ass take

by Anonymous 1 week ago

If they are being lazy, who cares? It impacts literally no one.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

And maybe they are being lazy just to be lazy. Who the hell cares? Go about your lazy self. Life's too hard to care about how someone else gets through the day when it's not impacting anyone else.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Who thinks sweatpants are pyjamas? They're just normal trousers I'm talking about actual nightwear.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Specific clothes make people look like people? How does wearing something like jeans make people look more human than sweatpants?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I still look like a person in sweatpants, you just assume you're somehow better than me for not wearing them out in public ;)

by CartographerIll2099 1 week ago

A person in sweatpants looks like a person who's completely given up. Don't look like you've given up, look like a person. If somebody doesn't have the willpower to put on an outfit, not a glamorous outfit just an outfit, they should just stay home. I think this attitude comes from parents just not parenting. If Mom and Dad don't show you how to dress yourself, if they're putting you in sweatpants and pajamas because they're too lazy to show you what an outfit is, of course you're going to go into your adult life looking like the highlight of your existence was getting an onion ring in your French fries.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

People don't want to put in the effort to look like, you know, people So someone who is in sweats doesn't look like a person to you?? People like you are so weird!

by Peggie90 1 week ago

Playing simple?

by Alternative_Disk_603 1 week ago

Jeans are absolutely restricting theres a reason people dont work out in them. Hell people wear running tights which are full length to run but you are probably not going to see many people racing in jeans.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Exactly.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Not you specifically. The space. It looks like they've given up. I can't imagine being so hopped up on looking progressive that you wouldn't notice somebody shuffling around looking like they've completely given up on life.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I can promise you as someone who worked retail for five years, nobody cares except bitchy people who just need something to complain about.

by Aracely04 1 week ago

Who is it "disrespectful" to, may I ask? I'm sure if I saw the khakis and default polo you wear every day I'd find it disrespectful to my eyes as well.

by Neat-Whole 1 week ago

imo it depends on the formality of the setting.. I work in events and I'd 100% feel disrespected if someone showed up to one of my events in pajamas bc it just violates the "social contract" of the space

by Anonymous 1 week ago

OP isn't talking about events

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Disrespectful to who?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

OP, who we all orbit around.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

👏

by Eloisa46 1 week ago

Boomer take. The idea of comfortable clothing being "not real" is a personal perception problem you have and should get over. No one working at a restaurant cares what pants you're wearing unless they have a dress code.

by Late-Philosopher 6 days ago

This opinion is insane to me. Since ancient times clothes have always been about functionality or status. Medieval Commoners would eventually possess one or two fine expensive outfits for very special occasions, but beyond that they would wear always what‘s available and comfortable. To me, people like OP always make it about themselves dictating what they want to look at instead of defending etiquette. They have a certain taste they project on others, nothing more or less.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

I'm gen x. Wear whatever you want. Not all of us are obnoxious. 🤣🤣

by Anonymous 6 days ago

It's a social perception, though (for lack of a better term, as opposed to "personal"). Like the type of language you use.

by emilycrist 6 days ago

Language evolves and OP needs an update.

by Late-Philosopher 6 days ago

OP's sibling just made themselves known.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Damn, got me there. 🫠

by Ok_Paper 6 days ago

Lmao

by Late-Philosopher 6 days ago

What exactly are pyjamas now? What was a silk nightie in the 60s is called a slip dress now and is perfectly acceptable outer wear. What else do you classify as pyjamas? A shorts and a tee? Again perfectly acceptable clothing to wear outside in the summer.

by Evaokuneva 6 days ago

The restaurants and stores I go to don't have a dress code. I'm not in school, but if it isn't against the dress code, who exactly is it disrespecting? And I'll respect my office when it respects me. Also, elaborate on how exactly it's lazy?

by hermistonrashad 6 days ago

Why would it not be self-expression? Can laziness (or a traditional valuesystem in which you don't highly value the effort put into looking representable to others) not be a character trait? Why are you separating this from other forms of self-expression? Can self-expression only be valid when it costs effort? Doesn't that just make it more pretentious?

by Salt_Delivery_1336 6 days ago

On one hand, yes, for the most part people can choose to wear what they want. That said it does look sloppy and careless and kind of gross to be walking around in pajamas all the time.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

so where's the line because folk wear swaets or basketball shorts or leggings. Also yes folk are lazy

by Anonymous 6 days ago

That's also trashy.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Folks are dressing up for what?

by Anonymous 6 days ago

I know, I always go out with my powdered wig and fine cumberbun. Those peasants need to learn class and respect otherwise no one will take us bourgeoisie seriously, seeing as we can't keep our lessors in line.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Cummerbund

by Pollichelody 6 days ago

My tutors would have me howling until tea time for this.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

The gall of the pathetic hoi polloi, wearing pajamas in public. Society and civility are outside the scope of their slovenly insolence. 🤣

by ConsistentHunt 6 days ago

I work 65 hours this week, I worked 62 last week, I'll wear what I want, where I want.

by Eloisa46 6 days ago

actually, pretty sure they wore clothes to last longer in colder enviroments because they saw food.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

screw you, if the grocery store is the only place ive been all month after weeks of depression, enjoy my baggy hoodie and pajama pants

by Anonymous 6 days ago

OP is probably some Boomer who thinks depression isn't real.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Exactly!

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Same complaint as people make about tattoos, and equally invalid.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

100% agreed.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

I can somewhat get behind "lazy", although this is already none of your business, but why in the world is it "disrespectful" and to who? I went out in public in sweatpants before, I have not bursted into flames, no one arrested me, apocalypse didn't start, honestly no one really cared - so I suspect it'll be fine if you go out in comfy clothes.

by Euna05 6 days ago

If I end up in a store in pajamas, it's because I only have the spoons for one thing. Deal with it.

by terry03 6 days ago

You think the bartender gives a f**** if I drink coffe in my sweatpants? You are living in a illusion created by a 1950's ghost of unnecessary rules.

by Willardklocko 6 days ago

I could never be the type of person you are to spend so much of my time worrying about what other people are doing. Does it affect you in anyway how others dress? no. that's it. take a chill pill nobodies "disrespecting" you by wearing comfortable clothes. grow up

by Anonymous 6 days ago

I think it does affect OP. I suspect people happily doing things OP "cant do" is the heart of the issue. Its so common. OP is mad because other people living under the same set of rules are allowed to be more free than OP allows themselves to feel. OP suffers a little to uphold respect for rules that don't exist. So they're mad.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

I'm not changing out of my silk pyjamas when I have a late night hankering and need to run to the grocery store. All my bits are covered.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Do people in the US wear pajamas in public for real?!

by Anonymous 6 days ago

I wear track suits. It's a step up from pjs, still comfy and I look athletic instead of the sloth that I am.

by Fancy-Priority4010 6 days ago

If I see an adult in public in pajama pants I immediately don't respect them. And know they vape.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

That is definitely an unpopular opinion…

by Anonymous 6 days ago

I don't get the "lazy" take. It takes just as much effort to put on pajama-like clothes as it does most any other clothes. And I don't get the "disrespectful" angle, either. I don't feel disrespected if somebody chooses to wear pajamas. That's their choice and it's on them, not me.

by bpowlowski 6 days ago

I don't get the "lazy" take. Usually people already wear clothes at home, so I suspect the "lazy" take is "not changing into different set of clothing". However I fail to see the issue in it. It might be lazy, but who cares honestly.

by Euna05 6 days ago

Bold of you to assume I don't have different sets of oversized tiedyes and polyester pants for in the house and for public

by Anonymous 6 days ago

There's nothing disrespectful about being comfortable. What's disrespectful is judging others based on their clothing.

by Ok-Basket2416 6 days ago

Idk if I would say disrespectful, but it does come off as dirty and unhygienic.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

If you don't want to be disrespected by what I wear, make sure to not be where I go.

by lauriane60 6 days ago

Who gets to define what "dressing properly" entails?

by Prudent-Plant 6 days ago

It's a rite of passage for young adults to do a hungover Macca's run in your UGGs and PJs. It would be very unfair to deny future generations

by Anonymous 6 days ago

I agree. They come in with their raggedy ass cookie monster pajama pants and nasty Yeezys and it is lazy.

by Hilpertemmy 6 days ago

I've never felt like it's lazy, but I will never take someone wearing pajamas seriously. You want to have a serious conversation with me? Go home and get ready for the day.

by Lorna13 6 days ago

The people who would care are not the people I care to associate with anyways. If it acts as deterrent, then all the better.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

I believe it just shows your level of intelligence.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

I'm a proper person. I would not be seen outside my home in pajamas, and even then I try to be dressed up by the time I see my roommates. Unfortunately, my standards only apply to me. If I meet someone who dresses like that in public, I can make a mental note that I probably don't want to be friends with them, but there is little else I can do besides live and let live

by BaseballTimely 6 days ago

It's tacky and those houseshoes always look dingy. Not unpopular with most people.

by Lambert56 6 days ago

I have chronic illness that not only makes it difficult to dress sometimes but also makes most clothing painful to wear. I don't dress for anyone buy myself.

by These_Wind 6 days ago

It just says to the world, I give up. I don't take it as a sign of disrespect towards others, just yourself. My family doesn't understand why I won't leave the house in sweats and it's because that's not the message I want to send to the world

by Anonymous 6 days ago

I have pajama day at work and I go out to shop after, wearing full pajama sets, and I don't think I've ever had anyone confront me for my pajamas disrespecting them.

by Reneelittle 6 days ago

Unpopular indeed! I'm with you OP!

by Leather_Routine 6 days ago

Please tell us why exactly it's disrespectful without sounding like a boomer.

by Norene03 6 days ago

I fear that's an impossible task.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Your self entitlement goes so far that people need to dress up for you? You need therapy or something, that's actually insane.

by Alone_Dragonfruit 6 days ago

OP lives in Dhar Mann land!

by Majestic_Meat2984 6 days ago

Who cares though? As long as you're clean and not being hateful what's the problem?

by Anonymous 6 days ago

I'm overdressed most times because I was raised that way but I really don't think it's disrespectful. I just enjoy shopping

by Anonymous 6 days ago

It's neither self expression, nor disrespectful, it's no more or less complex than people wearing clothes in a situation that doesn't call for a specific dress code beyond "covered".

by Anonymous 6 days ago

unless they're showing their unmentionables, i can guarantee you that no employee at a grocery store or airport or whatever cares what the customers are wearing

by Tight-Chain-3618 6 days ago

I'm well aware this is unpopular It's not, society revolves around these norms

by savannahsimonis 6 days ago

Meh, idc what clothes people wear. Comfort is king. Fancy clothes often look really stupid.

by ondrickaalvah 6 days ago

Are you a cop?

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Respecting people no matter what they wear is one of the most basic "signs of respect" and you can't even manage that. Why should we even consider your opinion on respect?

by Turcottedarren 6 days ago

Disrespect? Awh bless, life must be very hard for you to get through being disrespected all the time.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

People can wear whatever they want. I personally feel uncomfortable wearing "loungewear" outside the house (I feel exposed in sweatpants or loose basketball shorts and slippers) so I don't. I'm not a fan of the look, but I don't feel disrespected when other people go out in their pajamas or comfy clothes. As someone who feels much more secure and confident while "dressed for the day," I am surprised that so many people don't seem to care about their appearance, but I'd never tell them not to dress how they want. That said, there are definitely situations where it is inappropriate and disrespectful (events, dates, funerals, weddings, etc.), but I wouldn't include running errands in that list.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

I've never felt disrespected that somebody was wearing comfortable clothes. Especially as an employee somewhere, like wtf? The only exception to this is my cousins boyfriend showed up to my grandmothers funeral in a grease stained wife beater instead of throwing on a clean t shirt when he had ample time and opportunity to do so but refused and he was an obnoxious prick anyway.

by Josianneabbott 6 days ago

Lol wearing pajama pants to walk 3 minutes to the corner to buy some Skittles from the Bodega also isn't a human rights violation

by Anonymous 6 days ago

No one said it was. Put on some clothes.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Respect is earned and you clearly don't deserve it

by BoysenberryTop5042 6 days ago

What we're seeing is a breakdown of society. Of course nobody gets the respect angle because it is foreign to them.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

What is disrespectful about not wanting to dress up for a quick grocery store run?

by ophelia18 6 days ago

This isn't unpopular. It can be read as ableist though.

by InfiniteEast2733 6 days ago

How is this opinion ableist?

by grayce57 6 days ago

Not all clothing is easily put on. Lots of people have fine motor skill issues and have trouble with buttons, zippers, etc. Most "presentable" clothing has at least one of those types of closures on them. Adaptive clothing is not easy to find and it can be expensive.

by InfiniteEast2733 6 days ago

I agree with you. Literally WW2 refugee children getting off a 3 week boat voyage at ellis Island look better that people present themselves now. It's not comfort, it's lazy. You don't have to do anything crazy. Just put on a real pair of pants, it's not that hard.

by MonitorWeary98 6 days ago

As American, I honestly prefer to be in comfortable clothes and don't care what anyone else think about it

by Anonymous 6 days ago

As American That much is clear.

by WeddingEqual 6 days ago

I agree. I don't think they do it to be disrespectful, but I think it's low class. To me it says the person in question is lazy. Definitely not someone if want to be friends with. You are not camping, or in your home. Wear some damn clothes. Clothes are not uncomfortable, nor are they difficult to put on. It's a visual degradation of society. I've had the worst hangovers, I've had a brain tumour, which made me naceous and vomiting 15 times a day or with killer headaches. I still wore clothes. There is no excuse.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

i dont give a crap about self expression. just wear whats comfortable. if its just a set of PJs, doesnt matter.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

I don't know about this one. Do I think pajamas belong in an office/professional setting? No. But i'm not getting all dressed up to go to the store to get one food item and go back home. That's simply a waste of time, with no intent to offend those around me. I'd rather spend two seconds putting on sweatpants to make a quick errand than spending an hour putting on a fancy outfit to impress people who are walking right past me.

by ophelia18 6 days ago

Is putting on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt really "getting dressed up"?!

by Anonymous 6 days ago

But does it really affect anyone if i'm wearing clean, non-wrinkled sweatpants and a t-shirt vs a t shirt and jeans?

by ophelia18 6 days ago

Yes, you would be nicer to look at. You wouldn't want to see me in a mankini, same thing.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

If I'm going to the store for some flour and leaving, do I really care if I'm nice to look at ? Also, comparing wearing a mankini to wearing sweatpants is wild.

by ophelia18 6 days ago

If you'd have had respect for people you would care. I bet you talk on speaker in public too.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

What I wear to the supermarket has no correlation with my respect for strangers lol. I would base my respectfulness based off my character, the way I speak to them, if I remain in my own space, if I smile as we walk past each other, if i'm kind to the cashier, etc…

by ophelia18 6 days ago

Your clothes disrespect me

by Langoshamerico 6 days ago

why should people make themselves uncomfortable to fit your standards the grocery store doesn't have a dress code, as long as you have a shirt, pants, and shoes on they don't care, and neither should you. other people's opinions are only as important as you make them out to be and it appears your opinions don't matter at all

by mckenzie64 6 days ago

L take I'll wear what I want depending on my mood

by Faylenna 6 days ago

Eh. Function > Aesthetics. It's not like they're dropping a transmission or falling trees, they're grabbing packaged food off a shelf. Life is hard enough, stay comfy.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Putting on real pants and a decent shirt or a dress isn't a human rights violation Sounds like you're an insecure, and hyper-controlling, gatekeeper. I'm struggling to imagine what kind of lens you have on the world if you think random people in the world are dressing for YOU

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Lazy yes, disrespectful no. Half right

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Lazy? 100%. Disrespectful? Of what? Unless it's some kind of event or place with a dress code it's certainly not disrespectful.

by Glittering-Bridge653 6 days ago

But did you die?

by Maegankuhlman 6 days ago

I find it tacky when people wear their pajamas out in public but it doesn't affect my life whatsoever so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ you do you.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

One of those people that always feels disrespected Get over yourself

by Fancy_Initiative 6 days ago

Imagine just inventing things to be disrespected by.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Please explain how exactly wearing uncomfortable clothing to run errands conveys respect for you.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

They don't have to be uncomfortable. Just save pajamas for their purpose, sleeping.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Wildly unpopular and wrong

by Difficult-Ninja-1781 6 days ago

My body, my choice. I can wear whatever I want.

by ivy10 6 days ago

Nah I am 37 weeks pregnant. I will wear pajamas if I want lmao if you are so self centered as to take that personally that is a big ol you problem xD

by Anonymous 5 days ago

Im running errands in joggers, I need to be comfy. Don't care if you feel disrespected. Nobody puts on comfy clothes and goes out with the intention of disrespecting you. You seem a bit self-absorbed.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

Lol. Life is hard enough. I'm gonna wear my comfy clothes. No one said you have to look.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

who gives a crap what other people wear?

by United_Broccoli 5 days ago

Lazy? Sure. Disrespectful? How?

by Anonymous 5 days ago

I don't care what they wear as long ass I don't see their any part of their butt, private, boob/nipple (male and female) then I am good. Honestly I am more concern if they smell of weed and stink. That a bigger issue then how they dress imo.

by Classic-Pay-4425 5 days ago

Is your name Karen?

by Anonymous 5 days ago

It is a sign of respect TO YOU. Normal people with real problems don't care what other people wear.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

If my pants offend you, that sounds like a you problem.

by NewtSame8168 5 days ago

Doesn't mean you can wear it everywhere...Ehh, I actually can! Don't like? Look away.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

Respect to who? If I go out like that it's either one of two reasons 1) I want comfort 2) I'm so depressed you're lucky I put these clothes on But...I also don't really care about giving my respect to every single person in the world. We walk by and interact with most people in small, fleeting moments to never be seen again. I won't be a dick, but I'm also not concerning myself with appearance for, again, people I'll never see again.

by Derecknolan 5 days ago

Seems pretty disrespectful to pretend you have any kind of say in what someone else wishes to wear in public.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

Ok, boomer.

by Giles30 5 days ago

Lazy? Sure. Disrespectful? That's a little much.

by Natalie58 5 days ago

"Waaah, why are people choosing to be comfortable around me"

by Happy-Database170 5 days ago

I'm curious, what's your opinion on people wearing pajamas while working remotely and doing video meetings? Would you complain about that too? In general, I think your take is kind of outdated. If there's no dress code, then you're not disrespecting anyone. And no, there's no "gotcha" with the usual "Well, why not just wear underwear then?" argument, pajamas still cover everything, so that comparison doesn't really work.

by Matilde47 5 days ago

Who cares? As long as the clothing isn't inappropriate in terms of being too revealing, or violate some sort of dress code it honestly shouldn't matter. What does someone else's choice of dress have to do with you or me?

by Abdullahnitzsch 5 days ago

If you think someone wearing Pajamas in public is disrespectful, that says more about yoy than others. Spend less time judging others and more time doing whatever else you should be doing. 🤷‍♂️

by ludwigtremblay 5 days ago

Ok boomer

by Anonymous 5 days ago

Disrespectful to whom? How am I, a worker or just person out and about in society, impacted by someone's pajama pants? In a professional environment, sure. Because it can present a level of trustworthiness to look serious and like you're up for the job. But just someone out grocery shopping? How is that disrespectful to anyone?

by Anonymous 5 days ago

Disrespectful to who? I don't put on my clothes to respect you

by Anonymous 5 days ago

You. Respect yourself enough to change into some real clothes.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

If you are the type who gets upset at the clothing choices of 6 should stay home. You seem far too delicate for life outside

by Ashamed-Muffin 5 days ago
