It's the only proper way to enter a room, provided it is immediately preceded by kicking the door open super hard.

by Born-Caramel2274 1 week ago

Got fired at my bar for this

by CucumberAvailable 6 days ago

I keep it clean with "Sup, sluts"

by Anonymous 6 days ago

"cataclysmic" is a helllllaa overdramatic way to describe the phrase "you guys" lmao what happened to "i'm dude, you're dude, that cat is dude, we're all dude" - but okay, we gotta care about gender now that the phrase is "you guys" 🙄

by darejensen 6 days ago

This drives me crazy. People use ETA at work when discussing any kind of time estimate now and it makes me want to jump out the window.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

From my limited experience with POS systems, you weren't wrong. 😂

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Introduce them to the superior ECD

by Anonymous 6 days ago

They have no idea what ETA means

by Anonymous 6 days ago

it's vry efficnt, yo can elimiate one leter when typin

by HotBookkeeper6002 6 days ago

I say yous guyses

by Ahmed98 6 days ago

I'm here for it

by Different_Moose1255 6 days ago

As a non American this sounds like we are either going to round up some cattle or burst into a line dance.

by Salt_Presence_1086 6 days ago

as a southerner i can confirm this is what happens whenever anybody says yall

by eldaconroy 6 days ago

Can confirm. It's a genuine problem. Here I am in Mississippi and it's overrun by cattle and line dancing because everyone says y'all.

by legroslucie 6 days ago

As a non-Southern American, this is also how I feel.

by Malachiwelch 6 days ago

Northern American here, feeling the same way

by Thalia81 6 days ago

I just know you are annoying in real life 🤣🤣🤣🤣

by Anonymous 6 days ago

And also on the internet.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Yeah, you guys isn't offensive. And anyone offended by it should take a hard look at their world view.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Some women don't like being called "guy". Listening to other people's feelings and respecting them is important.

by Brauliodaughert 6 days ago

If you are finding reasons to be upset by a casual way to address a group of people, I definitely consider you the problem, not the casual way to address a group of people.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

When it's a group you gotta use the plural of y'all: all y'all

by ZestycloseRow 6 days ago

Came here to say this. Y'all is singular. All y'all is plural. And I'm not even from Texas.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Nah, y'all is plural, all y'all is extra plural

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Y'all is not singular lol. It's a contraction of "you all." You wouldn't address an individual by saying "hey y'all"

by Mtorphy 6 days ago

Yeah, its more like yall is small group, all yall big group or for extra emphasis.

by rodriguezjocely 6 days ago

The gender of "guys" is context dependent. If you say "how many guys have you slept with?" it's gender specific. If you say "how's it going, guys?" it's gender neutral. If you say "I know a guy for that", it's like 80% that it refers to a man. There's not a thing wrong with addressing a mixed group as "guys"

by Safe-Working 6 days ago

Ah, but the gender of "ladies" is also context dependent. In your example, it refers only to men. People are more than capable of interpreting words in their contexts. Our giant brains evolved precisely to handle this kind of thing. If they decide to have feelings about a particular usage, that's their own problem to deal with.

by Safe-Working 6 days ago

Sure, it's going to default to one or the other. The implication of that is that women get their own word pretty much all the time, and men have to share a word that in some context isn't reserved for them. And there's no emotional baggage needed when you hear the masculine term used for mixed groups, because everybody knows it's just a grammatical fiction. It all worked great for generations, until somebody ran out of more important things to complain about.

by Safe-Working 6 days ago

I know what you mean but you didn't pick a great example. Imagine addressing a group of women as "Gentlemen"

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Pick any feminine term, dude. If I walked into any room full of men and said "hey girls", "hola, chicas", "what's up, women", or literally any feminine word, the men would feel insulted.

by Ok_Shop_1283 6 days ago

Yes but English has mostly adopted vocabulary and ideas from Romance languages… do you think people in Spain are insulted when a group is referred to as "ellos"? It's the masculine form but in a Romance language you use the masculine form for a mixed group. As far as I'm concerned it's the same idea.

by Gleichnermarili 6 days ago

It's a little late to be getting angry at the grammatical convention of defaulting to masculine when mixed groups are involved. English is less gendered than most other languages, but even English still has a bit kicking around in a few words like -or or -trix endings for some nouns or the lack of a singular neuter pronoun. The languages English developed out of are gendered and default to masculine in mixed groups, and so too does English, just a touch less obviously.

by Virtual-Move-2009 6 days ago

You guys is fine. People who say it isn't fine are weird.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

That's fine, we can call out real problems and acknowledge how dumb made up ones are.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

That does actually sound hilarious "Alright you guy, we-" "Ahem. Don't forget the women in the room" "Jimmy, I AM women in the room"

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Why is "y'all" bad because it's southern?

by Ok_Shop_1283 6 days ago

Because people in the north are not of the south.

by Neither_West_150 6 days ago

Would you like to explain that in a way that makes any sense?

by Ok_Shop_1283 6 days ago

You girls is also fine. I use it all the time.

by Fantastic_Cabinet 6 days ago

I feel like most of these end up with a "yous"

by Historical_Zombie 6 days ago

Youses - Gollun

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Ok Sloth from Goonies

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Disagree, the proper term to address a group of people is "bitches."

by HighwaySea 6 days ago

But what if the group also includes hoes?

by Anonymous 6 days ago

What about the pimps, the players...

by federico70 6 days ago

Indubitably

by federico70 6 days ago

True enough. That's kinda the irony, isn't it? If people use the originally masculine term in a gender neutral fashion, it just becomes gender neutral

by Anonymous 6 days ago

'You guys' is not masculine coded, you just care too much.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

I just say everybody. I'm not from the south or a native speaker of y'all so it's more natural to me.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Y'all is just a contraction of you all. Certainly you can step into a room and say, "how are you all doing today?" Or even "hello everyone!"

by Limp_Roof 6 days ago

I'm a y'all truther. English needs a second person plural.

by marlen14 6 days ago

Texan checking in … for a big group use "all y'all"

by Anonymous 6 days ago

When I read the title I was entirely in support of you. Then half your argument was about how "you guys" is gendered. You have lost my support.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Meh, I dont use y'all because I don't like the way it sounds, but i live in the south so its always said with a twang. I worked to get rid of my southern accent as I was on the phone a lot for my work and grew tired of people from other parts of the country remarking on my accent all the time. It was annoying. When I address several people of different gender I normally use "everyone, all of you or you all".

by Anonymous 6 days ago

"You guys" is a masculine-coded phrase I don't even think it is anymore. I've heard "guys" used this way all my life. I think it can be contextually gender-neutral.

by Recent-Demand4294 6 days ago

It's like dude being gender neutral now

by Osinskistephani 6 days ago

The supreme way to address a group of people is "Chat".

by Anonymous 6 days ago

you all. only option.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

"Yunz" is superior to the traitorous "y'all".

by OkCareer 6 days ago

I'll hear a hearty "yinz" on occasion whenever I pass through Philadelphia and it takes way back to my youth.

by Darioprosacco 6 days ago

Because I am not american

by Confident_Run 6 days ago

Sure, but you speak English. What word(s) do you use to address a group of people?

by Nyah33 6 days ago

You guys

by Confident_Run 6 days ago

So gender neutral language isn't important to you. Ok.

by Nyah33 6 days ago

"Esteemed Ladies and Gentlemen". Yes, at a birthday party. Yes, at work. Yes, at the pub.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

youse is way superior y'all sounds American af and cringy imo but to each their own

by Darrionkuphal 6 days ago

Youse (Rhymes with use) is very Scouse. Youse (Rhymes with cows) is very Brummie. Y'all is very (to my British ears) Redneck American.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

I honestly surprisingly agree with this.

by Accurate_Bar1867 6 days ago

I never say y'all... ...but I type it a lot just because it's the shortest way my brain thinks to type when addressing multiple people

by Natural-Speech5989 6 days ago

Obama said "folks" but he wore a tan suit once so maybe we don't listen to him?

by Slight_Obligation 6 days ago

I'd use it, but I just got tired of all the banjo music in the background.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

I agree. I did my freshman year of college in the south and then transferred back in state up north. My freshman year of college was 15 years ago, I have been saying y'all ever since.

by Diligent_Basil 6 days ago

It might be widely used on the internet but most non-americans don't really say it in person.

by Lauryn07 6 days ago

I prefer "yous"

by clark08 6 days ago

I fully agree. I have a habit of saying "you guys" but have been welcoming "y'all" into my vocabulary lately. It makes more sense. I'm not sure this is really an unpopular opinion, but I agree.

by walkerdavid 6 days ago

It's y'all as in you all.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

As an Irish person my "y'all" is "ye all" - but otherwise, yes

by gradyaliyah 6 days ago

Irish person here too. I just use yee all the time for plural of you. I don't think ive ever met someone in ireland who unironically uses y'all.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Yall >>> You guys. Totally agree op

by Spiritual-Whereas 6 days ago

All y'all

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Yuck, ya'll isn't even a word. It's so rednecky.

by zakarywaelchi 6 days ago

As a white guy who doesnt have a southern accent sometimes ill feel weird using yall to black people because i feel like they think im trynna code switch with them.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

You're right that more people say y'all nowadays. It's more common than it used to be. Everyone knows what it means even if they don't use it themselves.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

I agree that y'all is a great word, I disagree with the notion that guys is strictly gendered. It's not uncommon for at least Indo-European languages to default to the masculine word when referring to a mixed group of people, for example in Spanish you can use 'ellos' to refer to either a group of men or a group of people with mixed gender.

by Abernathymargre 6 days ago

I've taken to always using folks, after 'folks I'm stuck in the WeWork lift'. It works for me.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Is dudes and dudettes too cheesy and dated?

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Yall and howdy folks are mains

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Ok

by Anonymous 6 days ago

I prefer: "each and every one of you, jointly and severally". It's the only way to be sure.

by Consistent-Raise 6 days ago

Jeeze, at this rate people are gonna start having issues with they/them.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

we're just part of history. what we say today isnt necessary going to be said in the future. nothing wrong with changing nouns into verbs adding ' to change words the word Lonely was created by Shakespeare, do you hate it?

by Mental-Rhubarb 6 days ago

I use y'all when I great my tables. I get high tips too.

by CucumberAvailable 6 days ago

"Y'all" is a bad second person plural because it is totalizing—what happens when you're addressing a couple people within a large group (say, 2-3 people out of 10)? This is what leads to abominations like "all y'all" to clarify what is already inherent in "y'all"—that the whole group is being addressed. This is why "yinz" ought to be the correct second person form of address in American English—it has all the benefits you mentioned for y'all, but is more precise and can be used for groups of multiple people that aren't "all"

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Not unpopular at all this is fire and true.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Guess it depends where you live. We don't y'all in my parts. I can assure you that is not likely to change either. Good try.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

It's y'all not ya'll

by Anonymous 6 days ago

Hey I support you gals for everyone! I think I generally use you all. Although living in the south for 20 years, y'all sounds cool!

by Anonymous 6 days ago

I prefer a nice, greasy "yous"

by Anonymous 6 days ago

I agree with the title only because I am born and raised and don't plan to leave in Georgia lol. It sounded bizarre hearing "you all" instead of "y'all" for the first time. I didn't know for a long time that it was a regional thing and not everyone is saying y'all.

by Worldly_Factor_5326 6 days ago

It's Y'all here in the South - always 😄

by Anonymous 6 days ago

You're coming at this the wrong way. "You" started out plural. We used to have a perfectly good second-person-singular pronoun: Thou (along with its inflections thee, thy, thine, and thyself). Let's just bring thou back and restrict you to the plural case. What sayest thou? Would it be suitable to thee? Thou art the judge.

by AffectionateShake 6 days ago

Y'all is fine, but if yinz and yinzes friends find yinzesself in da city of stillers then yinz need to use yinz

by Dear-Rent-8251 6 days ago

The problem for me with y'all, is that it's started creeping into Canada and making us sound as dopey as Americans. Just keep it on your side of the border.

by Anonymous 6 days ago

You. The 2nd person plural in English is just you. We don't need 'yall' 'yinz' 'youse' 'you guys' or whatever. It's just you.

by ParfaitWest1737 5 days ago

I agree on "Y'all" but crying about the gendered aspect of "You guys" is pandering to weirdos. Most people find the sentiment against gendered language silly and absurd because most people aren't that sensitive to these things because they're fully aware of the intent and don't get it confused with any kind of maliciousness. They know it means everyone and don't get their panties in a twist over it or try to hijack and chance other people's languages over it.

by oscar14 5 days ago

I mean saying "you guys" for general population where the assumption is mixed gendered is no different than per se using the plural for "they" in a Romance language a la eles/ellos/loro. In a Romance language you use the masculine for a general group of people. Something like 75% of English vocabulary has been adopted from Romance languages so to say "you guys" as a second person plural really isn't a stretch and makes sense.

by Gleichnermarili 5 days ago

Say it every time no one could ever get annoyed by that over and over

by Anonymous 5 days ago

I'm not saying y'all when yinz is sitting right there.

by brayanokuneva 5 days ago

"Yous guys" makes you sound like an old-timey gangster, which adds some fun flair

by Anonymous 5 days ago

I use y'all all the time. I rarely use anything else now lol

by Anonymous 5 days ago

Y'all this guy might be onto something

by danielbridgette 5 days ago

Youse is also one syllable

by Anonymous 5 days ago

I do use yall because I was influenced to use it by the media as a non native speaker, it was not my decision

by Anonymous 5 days ago

I'm just one of the dozens of people who is not from America.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

As a gender queer person, I use dude, guys, bro and many others gender neutrally.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

We're eventually going to hit a critical mass of offended where no one is even allowed to speak anymore. You guys know what I mean?

by aufderharsheila 5 days ago

y'all makes you sound like you're some kind of a Texan. it's really out of place coming from someone without a southern accent

by Anonymous 5 days ago

100% correct It's like saying soda vs. pop kinda depends on location and what is common. Nobody y'all's in my parts.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

People will defend "you guys" like it's gender-neutral, but it's really not. It's just something we got used to. English usually doesn't do this. We don't regularly use gendered words to refer to the opposite gender, especially not in formal or everyday group references. If people use it in a gender neutral way, then it's gender neutral. The N-word is gender neutral when used by racists, but 95% only refers to men when used by black people

by Anonymous 5 days ago

Lol, I would love to see a woman getting offended at being called the n-word but only because it's gendered.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

Folks made it's wall to city folks as part of inclusivity. But ya'll is still considered low brow country to city folk. AFAICT

by Anonymous 5 days ago

You know that there are other words for group of people except "you guys"?

by Anonymous 5 days ago

I love using ya'll. I even use it in professional setting I do not care. It's the greatest contraction in the English language

by Impressive-Lie651 5 days ago

"Masculine coded" smh Sit down and behave yourself you gremlin

by Anonymous 5 days ago
