+33 Movies with less known actors are better, amirite?

Counterpoint - Daniel Day Lewis and Gary Oldman are incredibly well known and talented actors that completely disappear into roles so you don't see them, but instead see their characters.

DDL in Lincoln and In the name of the father are completely different and half the time I don't even know it's Gary Oldman in a role. Love those 2 actors so much.

You couldn't have provided a single example for this one? Really? Would have massively helped your case but alright then

An example for me is Norman Reedus because he never changes his appearance. He's just Daryl every single time.

It depends on the actor. Some actors, like Gary Oldman are so good I dont see the actor--I see the character. But ones who don't change their appearance, it is distracting. Like Norman Reedus. The fact he has the exact same long scruffy hairstyle in every single movie, show or video game he's in means when he appears I can't see anything but Darryl from Walking Dead. It's just "hey, it's Daryll!" and any immersion is gone.

With certain movies it can definitely be distracting. The main example for me is Dune. I had never read the books or seen the previous movie so when I went into the 2021 version it completely ruined the immersion and world building the film was trying to create when every possible cast member was a super well known A list actor. I didn't see any of them for the characters they were playing but only for the actor playing them.

I imagine Jumanji (Welcome To The Jungle) would've worked as a great standalone movie if they didn't higher every famous actor they could think of, didn't use an IP that has nothing to do with the movie, and didn't have an unnecessary sequel. Like come on, We got Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, one of the Jonas Brothers, and Karen something… something, and then Danny Devito in the sequel. It's better if it's animated though, since you don't actually see the actors.

Steve Carell will always be Michael Scott đŸ˜‚

I think it's more about the actors themselves. Like, I know Jim Carey gets criticised for playing the same character in every movie, and maybe that helps, but when I'm watching Ace Ventura I'm not thinking about his acting in You, Me and Dupree. Another one, that I don't see mentioned a lot is Collin Ferrell. From S.W.A.T. to Fright Night, the Gentleman, In Brogues, he plays a good range of characters that don't conflict with me. On the other hand, ironically Gary Oldman sticks out to me in whatever he's in. It's weird because for a lot of his career he was known as the guy who disappears in his roles, and maybe that's why he stands out to me is because of how many times I didn't even know he was in a role so now I'm looking for him. But now that I do see him, for whatever reason I do compare his roles in my head and it makes it hard to take him seriously as an actor.

I think your opinion on gary Oldman is the most unpopular opinion ive read in this group.

In the first half or second? I think for a long time I just never realised this guy is that guy, and that's a sign of a great actor to me, when I'm not even aware of the person in the role, just the character on screen. Then, I think it was around when the Book of Eli came out and he was doing interviews, a lot of people were talking about all of his roles. From the bad guy in 5th Element, he played Winston Churchill in a fat suit, he played a short person, and I never even realised that was him. Since then, whenever he's on screen I just see Gary Oldman, Book of Eli, Hitman's Bodyguard, Kung Foo Panda 2, they're all just Gary.

Yes you have definitely some great counter arguments

Daniel Day-Lewis ruined There will be blood. Philip Seymour Hoffman tarnished Capote and Synecdoche. Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh were a travesty to Little Women. Cant enjoy anything.
