Have you gone?

by Sweet-Speed 2 days ago

That would require them going outside.

I have gone to very high end Omakase. It's an obscene ripoff

Local man discovers marketing

I don't value good food that much, but I can believe that chef's can do wonders. Especially if they use high quality ingredients plus all the skills

A great meal doesn't have to be pretentious

by Minimum-State-561 2 days ago

It's the same appeal as all other tasting menus

Nothing is popular for "no reason."

NO. Everything I don't like is popular for no reason.

Pet rock?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

It was cheap and had funny packaging. An absurd gift that made people laugh

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Who doesn't want a pet that's a rock

by EquivalentNo404 2 days ago

Probably one of the worst examples you could even attempt to rebuttal with!

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Sure, but the 'reason' can be pretty lame, like FOMO or good marketing

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Just because you don't "get it" doesn't mean it is "popular for no reason". It is clearly popular for a reason (it is good) but you object to the price of it.

HUH what are you even blabbering on about? What is there to not get about it?

Omakase was one of the highlights of my trip to Japan. One of many food highlights, I will say, but it was awesome

by Anonymous 1 day ago

The people who go are just looking for a guaranteed good meal of the variety of food they're in the mood for. If it cost $30 I'm sure you wouldn't disagree that it was a great deal. What you need to consider is that for truly poor people of this planet $30 American for dinner is as unreasonable as some people find 200. The money is all relative. If the money doesn't matter to you, it's just about the food being good and expertly prepared.

i like omakase becasuse it allows me to try things i would not have tried otherwise and i am a man of habit. Good Omakase is worth it but I see some say its a rip off. Well, either you are cheap or went to the wrong place

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Some of the best meals I've ever eaten are omikase style (meaning it's a custom built menu of many courses and small plates)

by Academic_Score_7110 1 day ago

Thanks OP. I'm going to Tokyo in a couple of weeks and you've convinced me to book an Omakase meal.

Sushi (specifically sashimi and nigiri) is meant to be enjoyed as a delicacy. High quality fresh fish. The huge platter with average at best ingredients from your takeout restaurant is a very westernized thing.

There's very high quality, cheap sushi in Japan. Not omakase level, but excellent nonetheless.

by Purple-Intention3363 1 day ago

It's premium, high quality, and fresh sushi and other dishes You also have a "personalized" chef that makes it in front of you. After 10-15 courses of those, even for 200-300 dollars where I live (VHCoL) is decent every once in awhile. Usually the premium places are Michelle mentioned or starred.

I always trust Michelle, girl has great taste buds.

I imagine it's just his friend named Michelle who has mentioned these places before

I had Omakase at Shiro Kashiba's spot in Seattle and it was absolutely incredible. World class experience, food was incredible, ingredients I've never had, served by the master himself. At about $500 for a couple, not something I'm likely to do much in my life, but absolutely worth it. And I had 6am Omakase breakfast at Sushi Dai in Tokyo at the Tsukiji fish market. Much cheaper than Kashiba, different environment, but incredibly fresh and wonderful food, some came right off a boat that morning. Again, worth every penny.
