+43 I hate going to concerts and live music events, because just listening to music isn't entertaining enough to me, amirite?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Music isn't supposed to be just a background thing. I'm not sure how old you are but in the before times we used to sit down and listen to an album. Flip through the liner notes..look at the cover...read the lyrics while the music played. If it was a vinyl we got up half way through and flipped the record. Going to a concert is a fun experience...live music just hits different. But I guess if it's not entertaining enough for you then it's just not your thing.

This right here. But we've been watching the actual art and storytelling of music erode before our eyes for decades. It started with the whittling of song runtime down to 3 minutes for radio play. Then the algorithmically formulaic pop music. Now social media and constant phone usage has highjacked the average person's dopamine response and obliterated attention spans. Many listeners can only do music in Tik Tok-length packages. I know a lot of people in my personal life who's attention span won't even allow them to make it through a full song THAT THEY LOVE before skipping to the next track. The social engineering has been wild!

by Pitiful-Schedule 1 day ago

No, that totally works for me too and I had that a lot of times. But then I'm in such a heightened state and am mainly busy with my heartbreak or grief and the music only enhances it.

I think now that music is so much more accessible via Spotify and Apple Music, and also because of convenience through headphones and earbuds, it has become more of a background thing. Now we can work or study while listening to music privately, whereas in the previous generations you would have to use a record or CD player. This is coming from a Gen Z btw, and most of my friends use music as a background thing.

by langworthcasper 1 day ago

I'm Gen Y, but even before Spotify I wouldn't JUST listen to music for entertainment.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I don't think I've ever seen someone actually refer to it as "gen y" before

by Enough_Classroom_789 1 day ago

Then you don't come around much I guess.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Come around the internet? I absolutely do. I just hear a lot more people say "millennial"

by Enough_Classroom_789 1 day ago

Thank you i was trying to do the mental math of which group is gen y lol

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yeah, it's sandwiched between gens x and z. Everyone just calls them millennials, though. You never hear "gen y"

by Enough_Classroom_789 1 day ago

Absolutely. Concerts are definitely better than that, but for me personally, only a little bit.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

What's your opinion on musical theatre?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Hate it.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

So the unpopular opinion is that you personally don't like going to concerts?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Keep reading this (and to be fair haven't looked into it enough). What is the difference to you? Opinion is preference isn't it?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Unpopular opinion: red is the best color

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I suppose if you explain by what method you rank colors and why red fulfills the requirements better than any other, it could be an opinion.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Please explain how personal preferences are not opinions? Honestly curious.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I just made an attempt replying to someone else 😉

by Anonymous 1 day ago

You said "I keep saying those are not opinions." Therse is no attempt at explaining why personal preferences aren't opinions.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Your personal preference is just that, no one can disagree with your own personal experience. An unpopular opinion would be 'live music is a waste of time and for mugs'

by Alert_Educator 1 day ago

Concerts are for the communal experience.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

You sound like an alien

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I mean, there's a lot more to a concert then just standing still and listening to music. I'm pretty much dancing or singing the whole time I'm at a show if it's someone I like. There's also the whole communal atmosphere and for me generally as surrounding trip, with other activities.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yeah, that's fun for ten minutes. But after that I get bored.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Have you tried drugs? Lol

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yes, on MDMA it's way better, but still not enough, lol.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

if you connect the music / artist, have favorite songs. like to sing along/chant, dance/mosh you'll make some friends you'd have a decent experience. these days tho it's a lot of ppl holding their phone n recording so I'm starting to care a little less

by Gleasonaileen 1 day ago

As a drummer I simply cannot understand this mentality, but to each their own I guess.

by Edwin07 1 day ago

Why would I have an opinion on how you consume music

by hesselbenedict 1 day ago

Yeah that would be really weird. It would make more sense if you had an opinion on listening to music in the way I described.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

"I hate going to concerts and live music events…" the first letter gives it away kiddo. And "I" is used multiple other times.

by hesselbenedict 1 day ago

I don't think you love music, I think you like background noise as you do other things.

by albertarogahn 1 day ago

No, I absolutely love music. Just not enough to listen to it for hours on end while doing nothing else.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

You're brainrotted and proud of it.

by Ukilback 1 day ago

I've always felt like that, even before social Media. And I'm not proud of it, it's just an observation.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I just hate standing the whole time. Also, if they're not a good entertainer then it can be kinda miserable

by Anonymous 1 day ago

You need to discover metal concerts

by Schummmadge 1 day ago

This is why this next generation is so Cooked. Music is a background thing? My friend, that's not an unpopular opinion, that is simply a wrong one. Music is so much more than elevator muzak to be caught like secondhand smoke. I hope that one day, you find a song or am album whose lyrics are so moving that you find yourself looking up the lyrics online just to really grasp the weight of what they're trying to convey. To come with your own interpretation of what the artists are saying. Once you find that, you'll find beauty in all Music. Even the music you don't necessarily like.

by jensenkerluke 1 day ago

I feel sorry for people like op. People who can't just appreciate a good album as a good album. Just lie down with some good music for an hour or two. Let it take you on a journey. Nothing else quite like it.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Kids don't get bored anymore these days. And boredom is where creativity thrives. Not just in artistic expression, but in creative problem solving. In critical thinking. Kids NEED boredom in order to grow their own identity and independence.

by jensenkerluke 1 day ago

That is so wild to me that someone can be entertained just by that. Especially if I don't like a song I would skip it after a minute or so and probably never listen to it again if it's not of my favourite musicians.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I love concerts because they are unique experiences. When you listen to an album (even a live album) it's always going to be the same. Live anything can happen. Musicians improvise, they make mistakes, they change up lyrics. They have guest musicians, set lists are changed varied so you never know what to expect. Plus the staging can add so much to the experience. It's going to be different and unpredictable each time and that's what makes it exciting

by Ashamed_Use_3525 1 day ago

I listen to music for itself. I'll smoke a fat joint, lay on the couch with my headphones and listen through a whole album. But I also play live gigs, maybe that affects the way I perceive music? I don't know

by No-Tree 1 day ago

It's typical for humans to get catharsis from participating in group activities. It sounds like you don't feel this and that's okay. Do you get any sort of good feelings from other group activities? Such as sporting events, church, etc?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

But when you're at a live show you're not just listening to music, you're... Watching a live show. Like, there's a whole production there.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I agree. Concerts, TV, movies all passive entertainment. I'd rather be actually doing something myself (running, hiking, golf, Pickleball) anything active vs sitting on my butt just watching

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Exactly the way I feel. I really love music, just not completely on it's own. It's like a really good sauce to an amazing dish, you know. But I would never eat just the sauce.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

The take of someone who has never actually attended a good concert.

by Huge-Horror-5960 1 day ago

See, I'm a filmmaker, so to me it's exactly the opposite. But I do love music in films.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I view concerts as religious congregations - they're an opportunity to find affirmation in a crowd. That's pretty much it. I personally don't have a religious bone in my body, and so these congregations don't appeal to me either. Also, no, the music isn't better live. Musicians give their best in the studio take, with no interferences or missed notes. That's the song the way it's meant to be.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Ok you're not really into music. That's fine. Not an opinion though just a preference.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I am a huge music lover and I only really enjoy dj sets live. Lcd soundsystem recently was amazing but 2 hours long and simply didn't hold my attention

by Alert_Educator 1 day ago

I hate it when you pay so much money to go and they don't even sound the same because of all the autotune used. I would much rather hearing how people actually sound on albums in stead of a fake voice that doesn't exist. The lip syncing and autotune mic's is a whole other thing I don't want to pay money to see.

by Annual-Wave 1 day ago

Yeah i hate going too. Better to watch videos on tv and listen.
