+42 Wireless charging is ass, amirite?

by Fluffy-Chard 2 days ago

I always figured it was for if you aren't using your phone like when you are sleeping or working. It can just sit on your desk so you dont have to plug it in every time.

by lafayette64 1 day ago

I guess, but personally with either I'd like to have a cable. It let's you pick it up I needed, and not have to think about where you put it back down

by Fluffy-Chard 1 day ago

Well, if I'm at my desk and have my phone plugged in, it doesn't matter where I put it down. If I want it out of the way, I can do that, then move it to my £1.50 phone stand if I need to look at something on it for an extended period. I can then put it somewhere completely different again without having to move the charger, too, and I amking sure it has the space.

by Fluffy-Chard 1 day ago

I'm with you. I can use the phone with my cable plugged in easily, or I can awkwardly hold a wireless charging stand and the phone.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

That's a wired phone and defeats the purpose of a cellphone. Wake up, phone is charged. Hop in car, wireless charging, get out, it's charged up for you etc. Super convenient.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Well, if by charged you mean my phone went from 40% to 43% during my commute...

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I always have hay and lint that packs my charging port, and won't let it charge properly. I used to despise wireless charging, but I've come to rely on it for that reason.

by Few-Respond 1 day ago

I don't like how it heats up my phone.

by Icy_Boysenberry_4589 1 day ago

Fast charging in general heats up phones, period. Wireless heats it up a bit more but still.

by ambrosekiehn 1 day ago

Same. I have a 1.5" circular burn mark on my desk from charging my AirPods on a full size Apple wireless charger & 18w USB-C brick. I only use wireless at work and in my car, but even then, my phone overheated & shut down one time in the car on a hot day while wireless charging & calling.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I just slap my phone on the magnet thingy when I go to bed and it doesn't wear out a cable or charging port. I don't care how slowly it happens and I'm asleep anyway.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

This is the answer. I've had several phones die from charging port issues. I love not depending on it, and being able to just slap the phone down on it (magnasafe). I can also grab it up for a moment, and put it down again without having to mess with a cable. Just did some road tripping where the charge cable kept falling out, and am shopping a magnasafe charging car holder.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

It wears out the battery faster though

by Signal_Foot1647 1 day ago

It's negligible at best

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Less negligible than wearing out the charging port

by Anonymous 1 day ago

So funny thing, I got lint in my charging port so I had to rely on wireless charging until I could get something to get it out

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Did it take you a while to find a toothpick?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I use one overnight. Completely fine when it's dark, I don't want to find a cord and I know my phone has 6-7+ hours to charge. Haven't had a corded charger in my room in years.

by Cobygrant 1 day ago

I guess for a bedside charger, it makes more sense as a convenience. I guess for me personally, that isn't worth the extra expense, but I see why you'd want it there specifically.

by Fluffy-Chard 1 day ago

I got a 3 pack from Costco a few years ago for $15. They ain't expensive.

by Cobygrant 1 day ago

Oh huh I admit I haven't looked in a while

by Fluffy-Chard 1 day ago

I also use adaptive charging so it gets done around 7 AM (charges super slow to conserve battery.) Doesn't get hot and my battery life has been pretty good. Google Pixel

by Cobygrant 1 day ago

That's a cool feature

by Fluffy-Chard 1 day ago

It really is. You can set it to trickle charge until whenever your alarm is set for which is really what I'm trying to say. but I'm a dad bartender who works nights with two kids so wake up anywhere between 6:00AM and 10:00AM LOL.

by Cobygrant 1 day ago

Yeah I think I'll find that useful if I eventually decide to organise my life a bit more and not ruin my sleep schedule every other week.

by Fluffy-Chard 1 day ago

Not slow. Also is great if your charging port is not working.

by Aglaeskiles 1 day ago

Broken charging port is a great use case. I took a road trip this weekend and the cord got flaky, wireless charging built into the car was perfect. It was really slow (AA and Waze using a bunch of power), but better than dying.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Even the fastest wireless chargers are way slower than a fast charger with cable

by Flimsy_Composer_4900 1 day ago

15w at most is slow

by Fluffy-Chard 1 day ago

You're aware that there are fast wireless chargers and slow wireless chargers?

by Mysterious_Yam 1 day ago

The fastest snail is still slower than the slowest cheetah.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

But even the fastest wireless chargers are slower than fast cable charging

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Oh good to know.

by Mysterious_Yam 1 day ago

Ok?

by Aglaeskiles 1 day ago

Not supposed to use it while charging ☝️🤓

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Just making stuff up now I guess

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Mine is built into my desk, so it's pretty nice.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I like MagSafe charging a lot, but otherwise don't care for wireless charging. I have a charging stand on my desk and my night stand. Just gives my phone a place to live while charging and it all is very neat and tidy.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

They're rubbish. Wired all the way. Only thing I'd probably use is a backup battery in the phone case but they're massive.

by Haleyayden 1 day ago

I learned this about 8 years ago.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Its rhe name that gets me. "Wireless charging!" "Woah, wireless? Like wifi, I can just handle and use it like normal while it does its thing?" "Well, no. It has to be in contact with this chunky thing in a very specific spot" "But....that thing has a wire" "...." Nah, I'd rather just use the plug.

by Charming_Bobcat 1 day ago

Yeah lol

by Fluffy-Chard 1 day ago

Most people don't use their phone while it's charging, they charge it overnight and then don't use it enough to need to charge it again till they go back to sleep

by Evening-Practice 1 day ago

Most people are phone addicts and have relatively old phone with degraded battery and when you combine these two factors you need to charge more than just nightly.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Fair enough ig, but I still don't see how it's more convenient than a cable.

by Fluffy-Chard 1 day ago

I can only speak for myself but my wireless charger has a spot for my phone, AirPods and watch to charge simultaneously on one cable which I find pretty convenient

by Evening-Practice 1 day ago

Oh I haven't seen ones with multiple points before that's pretty cool actually

by Fluffy-Chard 1 day ago

They're all over Amazon. I'm on my second cheap Chinese one, first lasted almost 5 years. Anker makes some premium ones, my Costco stocks one. My wife had a fold-flat one for traveling too. There's a ton of options.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

You ever try to plug ur phone in the pitch black of night at 2am when ur half asleep? Yeah u don't have to go through all that with a wireless charger. Just boom now it's charginf

by sanfordmarlee 1 day ago

You must have terrible night vision

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Half the time I knocked over the wireless stand lol. The cable I don't even need to remove it if I need to check the time or something.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Idk man atp I can do it pretty perfectly. Muscle memory does wonders

by Fluffy-Chard 1 day ago

You are being intentionally obtuse but okay

by sanfordmarlee 1 day ago

It's objectively more convenient to just place a phone on a stand than to take ur phone with one hand take the wire with the other and plug it in.

by sanfordmarlee 1 day ago

It's great if your charging port is compromised or broke

by EnvironmentOwn4553 1 day ago

Fair enough

by Fluffy-Chard 1 day ago

I just use magsafe. Then I can point the cable any way I want if I'm sitting down on my phone, or even if I'm at my desk and don't want the phone wire getting in the way. Just being able to not have it sticking out of my phone is reason enough for me to use it

by NeighborhoodSlow 1 day ago

Oh I didn't know magsafe has omnidirectional. I figured that one longer magnet meant it only worked portrait

by Fluffy-Chard 1 day ago

Wireless charging is the one thing that saved my old phone from becoming paperweight after the USB-C port broke. Implied is that it also reduces strain on the port on phones. Plus wireless charging can also be fast (e.g. OnePlus 50W) although 15W Qi2 still sucks. Plus it's good for devices like smart watches cuz of ingress protection, and pogo pins suck plus the charger adds extra weight to carry on. Meanwhile you can reverse wireless charge your watch from your phone which is very handy for extended travel without carrying another charging dongle.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

OK, I didn't know about the oneplus speeds. All Google told me about was Qi2. Yeah, I was mainly thinking about phones. For a watch, it makes much more sense, especially as that is something I definitely won't use while it's charging

by Fluffy-Chard 1 day ago

I prefer just slapping my phone onto my MagSafe charger instead of always messing around with a USB C cable. It's also great in my car. It charges while streaming music and Maps without fuss.

by angelica66 1 day ago

To me the ones with multiple uses such as doubling as a phone holder in the car are the ones that appeal to me. For my bedside or desk I think I'd still prefer something more mobile.

by Fluffy-Chard 1 day ago

I like having all charging choices available at all times

by Afraid_Kitchen_8099 1 day ago

Great for working in dirty environments. I work in a machine shop and I would get crap in the port all the time, now I put a plastic dust cover in the port and use wireless.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Idk how this is unpopular... I gave up on it immediately once I needed to take my cover off for it to work and even then it was lile 2.4 hours til charged I was like nope

by FrontAntelope5900 1 day ago

Slow? What you smoking? I haven't plugged my phone into anything in three years and it charges lightning fast.

by Helpful-Beach 1 day ago

lol wiresless charging is way slower than with a cable, that's you who's smoking something

by Flimsy_Composer_4900 1 day ago

Yup! and they throttle to prevent overheating. You can't just throw more and more watts at batteries. It's basic science. You're buying into a gimmick more than anything. Even LTT did a detailed coverage video of this very problem. Theoretical Vs Reality

by Helpful-Beach 1 day ago

Yeah my phone can't go that quick anyway. 40w works well enough for speed.

by Fluffy-Chard 1 day ago

Bro thinks his Civic goes 180 mph because the speedometer has a label for it.

by Helpful-Beach 1 day ago

How is that related? Either way, my phone is charging faster than from my old usb 10w brick or from a 15w wireless charger. Weather or not it throttles sometimes the net speed is faster

by Fluffy-Chard 1 day ago

And 65W charging is terrible for your phone battery.

by Kade13 1 day ago

Good thing 40w is enough

by Fluffy-Chard 1 day ago

Depends on the situation. Watching a movie on my phone, cable. Sitting at my desk periodically checking it, wireless charger. If I could only have one I would prefer a cable but wireless definitely has its uses.

by gladycerenner 1 day ago

Game changing option for me cause my port is always full of lint packed down until it's unusable. I throw my phone on it before bed with 100% success and it's charged in the morning for the day.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

You might want to delint your pockets if it's bad enough to genuinely clog the port 😭😭 Fair enough tho

by Fluffy-Chard 1 day ago

I use my cell phone like once every 2 days for work. I have a landline phone for everything else. I find it absurdly convenient to just toss my phone on a pad and leave it there until I want it. I know I'm not like most people.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Oh that's fair enough. I definitely use it a lot more than that

by Fluffy-Chard 1 day ago

I have a wireless charger by my bed and another by my work desk. I set the phone one it when I'm not using it. It charges. When I need to use it or get up to go somewhere, no cable to get in the way or unplug. Slower than wired? Yes. Does it matter? Not usually.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

The combo chargers are something I hadn't heard of that seems quite cool. I'd definitely consider that if I had a smartwatch

by Fluffy-Chard 1 day ago

The wireless charger in my car is amazing. I'm only using hands free while driving and all I have to do is set my phone down when I get in my car and it starts charging while I drive.

by Emotional_Orchid799 1 day ago

That makes sense tbh

by Fluffy-Chard 1 day ago

Fastest I could find was 15w which isn't very fast but not usb 2.0 slow (5w) My takeaway from this has been I use my phone too much

by Fluffy-Chard 1 day ago

You just haven't found a good use for it yet. For me, one of the best uses is a wireless charging mount in the car. It automatically grips my phone when I place it on the mount, securing it and aligning it perfectly for charging. No plugging unplugging so it only takes one hand.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I only started using wireless charging when my charging port broke. But otherwise I just use a cable.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

The biggest benefit for me is less clutter from multiple charging cables on my desk. My wireless charger is built into my lamp. Nice and tidy!

by Traditional_Chard 1 day ago

I have a regular wireless charger that sits on the counter. Put the phone down and if it doesn't light up shift a little until it does. May 2 seconds max? I also have a wireless charger in the center console of my truck. I can just drop the phone on it and it will charge while driving.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

The only pro is the chargers dont break. Wires easily fall apart. Even Anker onss

by Franeckigaetano 1 day ago

Wireless charging is more a novelty than anything else. It's the sort of thing they made to appeal to people who buy apple products compulsively

by OldStrategy 1 day ago

It's not an apple thing at all. The innovators in it are Huawei iirc with qi charging.

by Fluffy-Chard 1 day ago

Okay sure, but you do see the point I was making, right?

by OldStrategy 1 day ago

No. I'm 'never Apple' and I love magsafe overnight charging.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

It's not specifically about Apple, it was just the first tech brand that came to mind.

by OldStrategy 1 day ago

But if all brands can do it, your statement is pointless.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Nah not really

by Fluffy-Chard 1 day ago

Okay, sorry to offend Apple users. Apple is good, Apple is great. My point was that wireless charging is a gimmick. It's one of those pieces of "cool future tech" that is introduced to appeal to more compulsive consumers. It's not so much intended to be more effective than normal charging as it is intended to hit that "Rule of Cool".

by OldStrategy 1 day ago

Oh yeah ig I'm not an apple guy tho. The hardware is cool but I despise ios and iPad os. I have macbook tho those are good.

by Fluffy-Chard 1 day ago

I really cannot overstress how little I want to discuss Apple right now, tbh. It was just the first consumer tech brand that came to mind

by OldStrategy 23 hours ago

Cable chargers broke ports on like three straight phones for me. My current port is filled w dust. I have wireless pads everywhere in my house. I set my phone down in any room when I'm sitting for more than a couple of minutes.

by Anonymous 23 hours ago

Because fixing my charging port takes a day and a few hundred dollars, but a wireless charger takes 5 minutes and $30

by Anonymous 23 hours ago

I use it when I'm asleep. I don't care how fast it charges when I'm asleep, but it's always fully charged when I wake up in the morning and it doesn't wear out the charging port

by Anonymous 22 hours ago
