Video games are a relatively productive use of time, amirite?
by Anonymous6 hours ago
I share this opinion Was unpopular last generation, starting to become generally accepted

much more than most really think, like there still is people going against it, but they are more often than not called out for it. There are so many gamer parents these days, this would make kids up coming feel less shame, in all sense it might make parents who are non-gamers think a bit "out" once their children "but Johnny's parents play video games with him". When taking stimulations into account to, I think sooner or later, everyone will be gaming/stimulation in some way one day. I think that of simulation in like training for high risk jobs that depend on insane hand eye coordination, like surgeons. simulation gives access to practice in their own time with no risk at faults. Even low risk some might just learn better this way, think like a god dam cleaning simulation where the designer had made a level of the workers assessed jobs to do in the routine with the map being the same lay out as the building (in my mind i am thinking that crazy but I am opening that someone might learn better that way and maybe no one available to go around and show them) the one wanting them to do the job if a mad programmer or coder could make it how they want or if they got a coder to do it (no idea where the cost will fit in the economy though) funny i would not mind a video game with the lay out of my work place, hospital security simulation lol but i mean the same lay out as the hospital i work in

eh, you'd be surprised. Most people kinda categorize them all the same as wasted time

Doing anything too much could be considered wasted time.

I use the comparison that if I sat around watching a football or baseball game for hours no one would care. But as soon as it's a video game people act like it's a childish waste for some reason. I'm not lazy, I work a busy job and if that's how I relax after a long day so what, as long as it's not interfering with my other responsibilities.

Yeah my sister thinks it's ridiculous that I'm 39 and still play video games, yet her binge watching shows on Netflix is totally fine. Video games do have the possibility of turning into a harmful addiction, but if you don't overdo it they're fine.
by Anonymous5 hours ago
god what an obnoxious take from your sister. Especially when 90% of netflix these days is a bunch of garbage reality shows about 22 year olds.

Hey I'm binge watching Australian Survivor right now and playing RimWorld at the same time lol.

I would never in my life have guessed survival horror would have been in the beneficial category

Fair point. And I would assume the ability to pause and take a breather sets it apart from the relentless anxiety of competitive games

League of Legends is bad for mental health Never could have guessed that

Literally one of the biggest forms of entertainment in the world. This is as unpopular as you think it is.

Of course there are many mindless games, but there are many highly complex games that demand strategic thinking, resource planning, team coordinatio, reflexes and fast thinking. Some people ask me how I can still have videogame as a hobby (38M), if that isn't a "kid's activity" and my response is that most adults wouldn't be able to properly play most games I play (RPGs, 4x, strategy, space simulators such as Elite Dangerous). My point is there are a lot of games thay will keep your mind sharp and improve your intelligence.

Also there is strategy involved. Meaning you have to actually critically think, and quickly. There are puzzles you have to figure out, even regular gameplay are just puzzles in disguise. There's a level of navigation you need to learn. Remembering visual aspects of the game and how to get back to places. Moral aspects of the game when you have to make choices. There's sooo much involved in playing a game that I didn't even touch on here. Vs someone just passively watching TV. Even Great TV, doesn't have the interaction and brain development as video games. Literally, you see the puzzles they have kids do, memory games. All those developmental games kids do are just at a higher level and cleverly disguised in video games. I know this for sure because whenever my wife tries any game she give sup very quick because her mind hasn't been trained to deal and think in parts of these games that don't spell everything out for you 100%. It's truly is a development of skills that has carried over into my work life for solutions and problem solving.

I think as long as you're paying your bills and fulfilling your responsibilities, then however you spend your earned free time is productive as long as you're having fun.
by Anonymous2 hours ago
Well at least video games are fun

My older brother swears gaming is a waste of time, but will watch sport games and binge watch other shows. Makes absolutely no sense haha
by DifficultyOk2 hours ago
Video games work the mind. I'm sure that's good for brain health when you're older.
by Anonymous1 hour ago
I would much rather see my kids playing video games than watching TV. They are actively using their brain, improving reflexes, etc.

Got a phd using a video game as a case study so I did make productive use of my time. I'd also advise people not to be productive. You don't need to create or train every second of the day. Play for fun. Play because games are great
by No_Vehicle98851 hour ago
I wouldn't say video games are a productive use of time, but they don't need to be productive, that's not the purpose, they're just fun, and that's enough. Not every moment of every day needs to be productive, sometimes it ok to just have fun.
by Anonymous1 hour ago
Nothing about video games is productive… this is just incorrect. It is fine to do unproductive things but don't claim it is benefitting you in any way other than taking a break from reality.
by Anonymous1 hour ago
I mean, if someone saw a great film in theaters or read a great book, would you say "what a waste of time 🙄"?
by Anonymous1 hour ago
I wouldn't say anything is a waste of time if you enjoy doing it but that doesn't make it productive in any way.
by Anonymous46 minutes ago
It's not a waste of time, but that's different than productivity.

Video Games are an illusion of accomplishment; they aren't really. But, if we are comparing to other forms of leisure, then they have a leg up.

I suppose but why is it when I do Muay Thai or boxing, it's seen as generally good, but when I play video games it's seen as bad? I'm not using Muay Thai for literally anything in my life and I'm not gonna use it outside of a ring for anything. What's the difference between that and a competitive video game?
