+28 Men and Women should not have the same prize pool in Tennis, amirite?

by Anonymous 5 hours ago

Why not. If women can run marathons, they can play 5 sets of tennis surely?

by Anonymous 5 hours ago

Over extreme distances don't women eventually pass men, even?

by ila97 4 hours ago

I dunno if 'pass' is the right word, but there's at least parity once you get into ultramarathon distances. But tennis and marathon running are two different kinds of cardio endurance.

Meet in the middle, make it 4

by Anonymous 4 hours ago

Perfect, but it's still first to 3 sets. And then if it's tied after 4, you play another set as a tiebreaker. Problem solved!

by Anonymous 4 hours ago

That's just a 5 set match…

by NovelMeringue 4 hours ago

That's just the joke...

by Anonymous 4 hours ago

That's what they do in all of the non-major tournaments.

TIL they play different number of sets

It should depend on revenue created. If they have the same revenue created they should have the same prize pool. If they have less they should have less.

Which one generates more revenue? I agree they shouldn't automatically have the same prize pool - but if vastly more people are watching 3 sets than the men's 5, it's possible the women should make more. I also don't know if that's how the ad buys work. Do companies have to pay more every time the ad is run, meaning 5-setters (preferably with lots of tiebreakers) make everybody more money? Or do they make their ad buys based on the tournament and an ad rotation ahead of time?

Novel idea - sports rewards should depend on revenue generated.

Compensation should be based on money generated. Women's tennis generates considerable revenue and they should be paid accordingly. The only issue I ever have is when a league that generates a tenth of the revenue of another wants to be paid equally.

Ironically during the run of those big 3, Serena Williams was the face of the sport

It's only equal for the grand slams and isn't the consumer market pretty equal here?

by Anonymous 2 hours ago

Absolutely not.

by Murphyjerald 2 hours ago

100% agree, though maybe only make it best of 5 for 2nd week of slams maybe as I feel there's not really the depth of talent to make it longer earlier in the slams. That can/should change in future though.
