+48 When making a tutorial on how to do X, you don't need to explain why doing X is important. amirite?

It's good if the person looking for a tutorial is not aware of the whys. Like, I know changing the motor oil in my car is important but why? Ion know.

If you don't stress the importance, how will people know not to skip a certain step? The "why" behind something makes for a good critique, or mentor showing people things.

You seem smart but you're making a big assumption about an audience in claiming they "already decided they need to do it." Some, maybe. Definitely not all. Here's why you should always start with why: it cements the need for the audience to pay attention and gives you a chance to highlight where things can go wrong. Then: tell them what you're going to teach them (quick intro) teach them review what you taught them (quick summary) If an audience member doesn't want to hear why, they can skip ahead or tune out for a minute or two. But skipping the why is a failure on the part of the teacher. Source: Used to teach uni & professional certification courses.

Not the same situation. A tutorial is different than a classroom lesson. In a classroom, students are there because they need the class to get their degree or certification. They didn't choose that specific class. That's why you have to teach them the "why". A tutorial is a standalone piece being viewed or read by people who specifically chose to view or read it. There is self-selection in the audience that doesn't apply to classes that are part of a curriculum.

Except so much is recommended via the algorithms rather than from direct searches that this doesn't make sense

There are plenty of people doing direct and quick tutorials without all the padding, however those are not favored by the algorithm as those that has the viewer stuck there for 10min. The reason you are seeing them in the first place, is the reason they're 10min+

Some people like knowing the why and not just pressing a button cuz someone somewhere said to press it.

I agree OP. So much useless padding.
