People who do extreme physical feats "for charity" are doing it for themselves, not the cause. amirite?
by Anonymous5 hours ago
just start a fundraiser What do you think the "feat" is? Its whats called a win-win my friend.

I mean in a sense we kinda do everything for ourselves. Altruism can simply feel good to engage in, so it's a win/win.

the stunt draws eyes to the fundraiser / donation page some nonprofits might have a big staff to raise funds... in which case a lot of the money goes to that cost some might throw fancy parties to get rich people drunk and donate. Unfortunately people need to be incentivized to donate, and that will usually involve doing some stuff not directly related to the cause

The original prompt was regular people doing things like walking across a desert, swimming across an ocean, or cycling across a country. Not a famous band like U2 setting up the widely criticized campaign your talking about.

I stated that, and you can still apply the same logic. How much did it cost to put on vs what was raised. Doing those stunts is not free. Insurance is not free or cheap, camera crews, adverts for said event, everything cost money.

Ok but would they have been able to raise any money without doing the concerts? Probably not, so your alternative option to donate without concerts doesn't really make sense. Of course, any wealthy person could just donate, but that wouldn't achieve the other goal of raising awareness.
by Anonymous3 hours ago
You missed the point. They didn't raise as much as they spent. So if they never tried to raise any money i.e didn't hold the concerts but used THAT money to donate to the cause it would have been a bigger donation. If I have to spend 2mil to raise 1 mil… the smart move would be to donate the 2mil. That doesn't even mention that those benefit concerts left the Venus filthy and cost those cities more money to clean up after them. All in all it was a waste of money.

Yes, charitable events are sometimes mismanaged. But to think that any charity is receiving truckloads of money so "why even hold an event" is silly. they could've donated all of THAT money What money? The money they only received because they invested in the concert?

What have YOU done to make the world a better place recently?

Read about Terry Fox and let me know if you still feel the same way.

Terry Fox didn't run across Canada for this slander ( A+ unpopular opinion)

Would you rather they keep the money and not donate it?
by Sensitive_Bed_35281 hour ago
You get attention, at times media coverage, I mean you said it yourself. I mean that's it. You can potentially raise a lot more money that way.
by Anonymous1 hour ago
These "person doing something for charity is actually doing it for themselves" takes are always so stupid. Like obviously, but that's why it works. They get some attention/get to do something fun, and they raise money for charity doing it. That's literally how charities work, they draw people in to donate by doing something fun. Charity doesn't count more if it sucks for the person doing it, raising money is raising money
by VegetableAthlete1 hour ago
I don't care. The cause still gets money and attention.
by Anonymous1 hour ago
You or Tom Cruise could raise more money?
by Anonymous1 hour ago
Does it matter WHY they're doing it when the charities are still benefiting? It doesn't matter if someone runs across australia in the blistering heat for selfish reasons and tiktok fame if they're still raising money for cancer.

Agreed. In most cases I think the people already want to do it. Then an organization comes in with a duffle bag of money and a tshirt.

What exactly are the "more effective" and "less self indulgent" ways your talking about? No one's going to donate to a simple fundraiser that a random guy starts and donating directly can only go so far.
