I think coriander tastes like soap to everyone, amirite?

Doesn't taste like soap to me. Tastes like delicious coriander.

There absolutely is, it's the combination of alkalines and fats that produces its iconic "soapy" flavour. Combine those chemicals, and youll always get soap flavour. Even scented soaps have the underlying soap taste

This implies, however, that flavors are monolithic in the sense that they should be objective. Except I hate lobster utterly and completely. Do I taste it the same as you do and I just don't like it? Do I taste it differently and that's why I don't like it? I'd be curious if the people who like the soapy herbs have a less offensive response to soapy flavors in general.

FYI coriander is the seed of the cilantro plant. Do with that information what you will.

You must have some delicious soaps

Experiences and genes don't line up perfectly objectively. Do people with the specific gene "taste" the same thing you do, or are they genetically disposed to dislike the same taste you taste? Hard to say. What we do know is some people don't seem to think it tastes like soap and do or don't like it (not everyone who doesn't have the gene likes it), and we also know that some people who do have the gene agree that it's a little soapy but don't dislike it. So… does the gene dictate what we taste, or what our experience of that taste is? No idea. We don't even know if we all taste things the same anyway. For example I'm not aware of there being a lobster-based-flavor-gene, but I hate every incarnation I've ever had (over a dozen varieties over 30 years), but some people love it so much. Are they tasting it differently than I am? Am I tasting the exact same taste they taste but find it repulsive? How does that work, how could I be tasting the same taste and not like it? How could I be tasting something different if it's the same food? We don't really know, but I know people pay a LOT of money for a food that I wouldn't eat if it was free.

Doesn't taste like soap to me. To me it provides a nice freshness to help cut through heartier foods. Great on burritos, for example

Well it doesn't

It doesn't taste like soap to me and I still think it tastes bad. I also hate it that whenever I say it to someone they immediately reply "That's because it tastes like soap to you". No, dickhead, I just don't like it.

I know what soap tastes like and coriander tastes nothing like it.

You can't have an "opinion" that is "I think (this thing) applies to everyone lmao. That's not what an opinion is

I love coriander, though it doesn't taste like "soap" to me, but celery does.

Celery is also a bit of a weird taste to me, too.

I'm not sure about coriander but cilantro is from the same plant, I see. I'd always heard of this so I tried chewing some. At first it was just an unpleasant taste…….and there it was. Dishsoap. It was a terrible taste. Not buying that again.
