+62 The term "Latino" should include all who speak a Latin based language, not just Latin Americans, amirite?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Latino is a colloquialism for someone from what is called Latin America. They don't have to be accurate or precise. I think it's cute that you think that this will upset people. Maybe if you had any influence to change this it might, but being pedantic with no shot at enforcing it doesn't really upset people, unless you are obnoxious about it.

Yes, this was my understanding too. Latin America came before Latino, so wouldn't make sense to expand the group to those outside the region.

But leave out Quebec and Haiti?

Well, considering that Haiti is a country under the American continent with a Latin language as its official language, I would say it is included. If by Quebec, you mean Canada, then I'm less convinced on that. Quebec isn't a country, and I think that's the first thing. If not, we could say any state or province is considered Latino.

I meant just Quebec

Latin America should include all Latin areas in the Americas. How are French Canadians any less Latin than Brazilians or Mexicans?

Why do we drive on a parkway and park in a driveway? Language doesn't have to make "sense." English is especially nonsensical. The term has always had to do with the Latin American region. If you called a Quebecer Latin American, I'm pretty sure they'd be offended, or at least confused.

So you want the term to be broad to the point of worthlessness…?

Romanians everywhere are celebrating right now. I mean you are right, linguistically it would make more sense. But i understood Latino as more of a cultural term for people from Latin America. And if you include all these groups of people you mentioned the term because more vague and less precise.

For what do you use this term then? When do you have the need to talk about Chilean, Mexicana, French, Quebecois, Italian, Romanian and Angolan people in one single context?

A lot of people use the terms Spanish, Hispanic or Latino wrong and I look down on all of them from my high horse idk if your take is even unpopular.. You are a perfect example of that though but take it even a bit further.

Latinos are ppl with Latin American heritage. I'm Spanish. So I'm Hispanic - not Latin American. And Italians are, well, Italian.

I think the term for what you're thinking of is "Romantic".

I wanna be around when someone tells the French Canadian that they're latino 😆🍿

Now everyone wants to be Latino, are you Rosalia?

by emmanuelle33 1 day ago

Does that include anglophones, given the huge Latin influence on English?

I get it but it's just not practical
