My cats certainly cosigned it

I feel like people have an issue coming to terms with the fact that freedom means allowing idiots to do stupid things sometimes.

by Business_Dark 10 hours ago

Yeah, human history is just oscillating between humans making poor decisions with their freedom and humans fighting for their freedom Is the ultimate purpose of human life to just do dumb stuff because we can? 🤔

by Anonymous 10 hours ago

Diogenes living in a barrel and jacking off in public says yes.

by Nolangleason 10 hours ago

Darwinian evolution in action.

by Anonymous 9 hours ago

We have had fireworks for way too long for "evolution" getting rid of them

by Anonymous 9 hours ago

Sometimes, yes, but let's not forget we're supposed to live in community with other people.

by Anonymous 9 hours ago

Freedom doesn't mean shooting fireworks outside my window at 2am, which is why we have ordinances for that

by Altruistic-Bus2911 9 hours ago

It does on the 4th (in most places). We have a societal, cultural understanding that you can shoot off fireworks on the 4th of July, just like we have an understanding that you can wear a mask and walk around asking for candy on Halloween.

by Business_Dark 9 hours ago

I mean, at 2am, it's not a cultural understanding, it's just being an asshole. Just like trashing someone's house with toilet paper and eggs and smashing people's jack o lanterns Halloween night is just being an asshole.

by Altruistic-Bus2911 8 hours ago

Walking around in a costume is nowhere near the same as lighting explosives

by Anonymous 8 hours ago

There's ordinances around what times they are allowed to be set off, though. My city allows them on the 4th between 9AM and 11PM. I don't think anyone (or mostly anyone) minds it in that window, but the random 3 AM mortars are dumb as hell

by Anonymous 8 hours ago

Wearing a mask on Halloween or any other time doesn't impact other people, artillery does

by CartographerBest8533 8 hours ago

Luckily there is always the option of turning your porch light off to avoid trick or treaters. No such option exists for those who don't want bombs going off, starting fires, and littering.

by CartographerBest8533 8 hours ago

It actually means exactly that.

by False-Moment 7 hours ago

You seem to have survived.

by zelda45 7 hours ago

I kind of disagree. We don't let people drive on the wrong side of the road because that's an activity that affects others around them. But what about their freedoms!! Sure, we have freedoms, we're also a society of rules and laws. If there are laws about no loud noises after 10 PM in areas, they should be enforced, and that includes fireworks.

by Anonymous 7 hours ago

Define freedom

by Anonymous 6 hours ago

It's the dumb definition of freedom: freedom of choice. It relies on the concept of free will, which doesn't exist.

by Larkinrubye 6 hours ago

Right, but we don't have infinite freedom of choice in this country, we came together to decide what things we have the freedom to do and what things we have the freedom not to do. So to just nebulously throw the word freedom around is kind of vapid in my opinion. Ultimately in a nation of laws, we end up, deciding whether or not we want certain things like fireworks or not, and usually it's based on state laws so you can choose to live in a place that has fireworks or not. I don't know, my point is just that people always default to the word "freedom" and have no idea what that actually means as if it's some sort of all encompassing all powerful argument ender.

by Anonymous 5 hours ago

There we have it, the most american take.

by Putrid-Gap 5 hours ago

Yup. Funny how it's always "x should be against the law!" "People shouldn't be allowed to do y!" "Why don't they just outlaw z?" Until laws and changes actually start getting proposed and then it's "you're taking our freedoms!"

by Brilliant-Guess 5 hours ago

Marijuana is federally illegal. Don't here much about it from the muh freedoms crowd.

by Anonymous 5 hours ago

I feel like people have an issue coming to terms with the fact that total freedom for everyone is a bad idea.

by CompetitionNeither75 4 hours ago

Im fine with people doing stupid things. But im not cool with people doing stupid things that can endanger people that aren't even a part of the activity. It's a yearly thing of houses catching fire because of them, and it is frequently not even the house of the person shooting them. Or fires in general being caused. Not limited to fireworks, but tis the season.

by Material-Fortune8101 4 hours ago

There's a huge difference between stupid things and rude things though. My neighbor was blasting fireworks for like two hours last night starting at 9 pm. People are trying to sleep.

by Anonymous 4 hours ago

yea it gets dark late so 9 pm is pretty reasonable. Sounds like they were done before it was even midnight too

by Anonymous 3 hours ago

Don't engage with idiot Karens…

by Anonymous 3 hours ago

Do you mean they waited until it was dark to shoot off fireworks?

by Anonymous 3 hours ago

Did you yell avada kedavra after lighting the candle?

by Anonymous 3 hours ago

People are simply too stupid to be trusted with them. Name one thing where no one is "too stupid to be trusted with". Seriously, if we started to ban everything that people are "too stupid to be trusted with", we wouldn't have anything anymore - frankly we would need to ban humanity... Aside from liking or disliking fireworks, I just don't think this argument holds up.

by Consistent_Sun_8938 2 hours ago

Hell cell phones some people don't deserve, old and young alike.

by Jaclyndaugherty 2 hours ago

You're thinking further than I am ... I literally once cut myself on bread I baked a little too long. We're honestly doomed if we start that.

by Consistent_Sun_8938 1 hour ago

True, imagine if cars were banned bc "the people were too stupid to be trusted with them."

by Stiedemannlisa 1 hour ago

We barely have anything now. Fireworks can be the next to go. Bring back flavored vapes.

by Anonymous 1 hour ago

They're fine until a certain time then stfu.

by Anonymous 59 minutes ago

Exactly. They're lately acceptable one day a year and everyone knows what day it is. 4th of July? Deal with it for 5-6 hours. Random Tuesday in March, I agree, it's not necessary

by fredericheathco 32 minutes ago

Some people think July 4th is the whole of the 1st until the 5th. Can't convince them otherwise because they screech about their "freedumbs".
