+28 We should start casting lesser known/ unknown actors instead of A-listers, amirite?

I think (I think) what OP is touching upon is the need to actually break free of the cycle you describe. We know the cycle and we are observant, that doesn't mean we can't find an out.

Im not talking about taking a huge risk of course, but its also about finding a balance. If you take a big director with a small actor, people will actually be interested, "why did they decided to work with this actor?" People will want to go and see for themselves, if the movie is good then social media and word-of mouth will do the rest. I think it's also about having some trust in your audience

I'd argue that the masses don't know a lot of directors by name. That's why you see this G's like "From the director of X". People know actors. While I agree with your point, there's a reason why 50% of budget is for marketing. Making a good movie as important as selling said movie. A Lister are not A Lister because they are good, they are A Listers because they sell tickets. Most time they're good but studio care more about the selling power. While it's boring and a bit sad, if you invest hundreds of millions in a project, you'll do what it takes for it to work... People, me including, don't watch much indépendant film because out of 10 independent film how many will give me a fun night? I don't know, but I know what I'll get if I watch John Wick 4, Dune or Inception.

As much as i hate the same actors, let me ask you, why do you think these people get recast so frequently?

by Sufficient_Way2410 2 hours ago

because they sell...because they're cast...because they sell... and so on :)

by Anonymous 2 hours ago

They get cast because this way the producers know that at least a decent number of people would see it. Even if it's not a big box office hit, it'll still make a good amount of money. When a movie is a big budget film with its entire cast being a bunch of unknowns, it's a huge risk for them.

Exactly. Its essentially brand recognition. It sells tickets.

What does nostalgia have anything to do with casting someone like paul mescal or jenna Ortega?

by Sufficient_Way2410 2 hours ago

Use your critical thinking skills for a moment. I also mentioned Brad Pitt. Also, Didn't Jenna Ortega get cast in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice?? She's an A-lister in the sequel of a well-loved well known cult classic.

by Anonymous 2 hours ago

Right, but what does she have anything to do with that? Thats just a popular person being cast in a role, if it was for nostalgia theyd pick someone nostalgic. Like bringing back the original bill and ted, or the original bad boys... what have they picked brad pitt in recently that would be for nostalgia? Are you saying because brads now a bit older if hes casted in anything its for nostalgia? Like thats such a nonsense point. You cant just say use your critical thinking skills from a completely nothing point to suggest i have no clue what im talking about, thats just such a weak argument.

This reads like you just put it through chatgpt to try make your point?

by Sufficient_Way2410 1 hour ago

Or maybe you're just ignorant, I said English isn't my native language but it doesn't mean I can't communicate, it's harder when I'm trying to make a bigger point.

Jenna was cast in Beetlejuice just a few days after the premiere of Wednesday. She wasn't even close to being an A-lister

OP does not understand that acting is actually pretty tough confirmed

by Anonymous 1 hour ago

I know acting isn't easy bro, people in my close circle are actors (theatre) if it was an easy job they wouldn't have degrees and schools for actors. I'm just saying there's better people out there instead of just casting a-listers that do a bad job most of the time or nepo babies

There's rumors of Pedro Pascal as the next James Bond.

by giles00 33 minutes ago

I can get past Pedro because his career hasn't been as long as someone like Zac Efron or Leonardo DiCaprio, but studios sure are making me get Pedro fatigue if they continue casting him everywhere 😭
