+22 EVs are cooler BECAUSE they make less noise, amirite?

by Nigelhansen 5 hours ago

I've heard some EVs recently from all the way up in my 4th floor apartment that sounded like a UFO was circling around my building. Not all are silent. Some are just differently loud.

At low speeds, EVs don't make any noise normally, so they need to make noise artificially for safety reasons and some of them make some weird ass noises I have been almost run over a few times by EV because either it wasn't making enough noise when it probably should have, or the noise it was making did not register as a car in my mind, it was just some weird ethereal ambience.

If EV were silent would happen a lot of accidents

Yeah, they took a good thing of quiet cars and made them loud because drivers can't be assed to actually pay attention when driving in cities.

by Anonymous 4 hours ago

They are sadly legally required to make some sort of sound at low speeds now.

I can imagine that if you're visually impaired some noise helps you detecting a car.

I'd love to change and pick different sounds my car makes. Give my accessibility like changing my ring tone and messages notifications.

They're not soulless cause of the lack of noise, they're soulless because of their lack of driver engagement

Blind people hate this one trick

I've honestly never ridden in an EV, but one of my neighbors has a Tesla and she started it and drove out of our garage the other day and I was pleasantly surprised at how silent it was. It was honestly super cool

It has nothing to do with being quiet. Plenty of very powerful cars (albeit luxury) cars are still fairly quiet. EVs are soulless. Any classic sports car ranging from a little 4 banger Porsche 944 all the way up to a v12 Aston Martin (and everything in between) has an engine that literally breathes air, has a visceral sound, it moves when you gas it, it has that perfect sweet spot where the engines power band is making the most out of its hp and torque. The transmission gives you feedback, the clutch gives you feedback, the steering (mechanical) connects you far better to the road. Nothing will ever replace the feeling of a perfect downshift in a car that has a mechanical, clinky, tight gearbox and shift lever. There is no comparison. There are so many spotty cars out there (no so much now but prior to say, 2010) that have so much uniqueness and character. Regardless of how much power or noise it makes, it's an experience. You will never get that in a million years from just a battery.

I don't understand how people like cars enough to describe them like this. It's just a tool that takes me from here to there. The more discreet, the better.

It's less about how fast the car can accelerate, and more about the overall driving experience. Including the speed, the handling, and yes, the sound. I think the sound of the engine does more than you think. While a big part of it is just sounding cool, it's also a good indicator for how hard you're pushing the engine.

funny simile lol

Just want to say my Prius is silent on battery power. But Tesla's sounds like a jet that's about to take off.

by Anonymous 2 hours ago

I totally agree. Even with an ICE it doesn't need to be loud to be fast.

Most muscle car and car enthusiast don't care if they're the fastest. I know my 1972 Skyline isn't going to win races, but it's fun as hell to drive.

It's cool you like EVs better, but there are some intangibles that make people value ICE cars and the sounds they make. Just like watch snobs who are passionate about mechanical watches even though they are less accurate than quartz watches.

I like the rumble of a classic V8 but I also like the UFO warble of an EV at low speed. Its ok to like different things...

Various configurations of internal combustion engines have completely different character and characteristics. Sure, if you've spent all your time in a Honda civic, you wouldn't know that, but saying they're all the same is just ignorance.

Soul when it comes to machines is often about the vision, craftsmen ship and how "human" the design is. Really good example is old T9 phones vs current iphones. We went from fun shapes and colours with little trinkets and quirky software to a black rectangle.

Maybe but when it come to cars craftsmanship left along time ago along with most anything else
