I was a claims adjuster for a couple years and had a few claims where someone swerved and got into a bad wreck. One lady rolled her jeep grand Cherokee like 5 times to avoid a raccoon lol. Funny because she was fine but easily could have died from that one. Hit the critter, or avoid if you can safely. Whether or not you feel bad about it is up to you but for me it would just be like "sorry dude" and carry on. Hopefully with no vehicle damage lol

This is pretty much my take. Lots of bad drivers swerving at the last second, flipping their cars, to avoid what would otherwise be a red spot on their undercarriage. Of course, if you see an animal 40 feet away and know you can avoid it, avoid it.

Insurance will fix my car. They wont fix that poor squirrel. Besides there are too many humans and not enough animals on earth.

I grew up in an area heavily populated with deer. We were always taught just to hit the deer, it's safer than getting into a head on collision or hitting a telephone phone.

My mother in law swerved to avoid a turtle, she totaled her car and was in the hospital for a couple weeks and still has back problems. Oh, and the person behind her hit the turtle.

And hitting a telephone pole becomes a collision claim versus a comprehensive for hitting the deer. Maybe a dash cam could convince the insurance company otherwise, but I doubt it.

I've known plenty of people including my own mother who've run into deer and other than some minor cosmetic damage they usually bounce off. Now if you hit one dead on at 75mph you'll probably lose your bumper and a headlight. WTD average 100-125lbs and are surprisingly bouncy.

no i'd rather not kill a small animal if theres an option to avoid it

by Anonymous 3 hours ago

If you can safely swerve then sure, but otherwise causing an accident will end up with more damage than killing a small animal.

i'd rather cause a minor accident then kill a cat icl

by Anonymous 2 hours ago

Yea, that's the point. If you're driving slower, then of course you try not to hit the animal, I don't think OP is advocating running over animals as slower speeds, at least I hope not.

by Otherwise_Place_3491 2 hours ago

obviously if you see a small animal on the motorway you're not gonna serve because that's extremely stupid

by Anonymous 2 hours ago

Some people still do swerve in those situations despite it being a bad idea.

by Otherwise_Place_3491 1 hour ago

Well hopefully you have a solo accident and don't involve anyone else.

Same

by Outside_Bluejay 1 hour ago

Surely there's some stats concerning this.

In Germany it's a legal practice that whoever causes an accident by doing it is at fault.

Someone I went to high school with was killed when they swerved to miss a raccoon and crashed head on into a tree.

by CommandDesigner705 43 minutes ago

Isn't this what you are actually supposed to do? Swerving will indeed cause a bigger accident. It also depends just how small.

100% agreed, don't think it's an unpopular opinion tbh, but I think naturally people will try and swerve.
