I'm OK with stiff towels. I don't use fabric softener and don't own a dryer. Still my towels aren't as stiff because they're not as old. The older ones I own are the ones that dry stiff and scratch. And indeed they absorb so much more!

I don't use any fabric softeners or dryer sheets. I love nice hot summer days where I can just put my towels on the line and have them come back in crunchy.

Give me my towels hard, crusty and damp!

This, 100%, I seriously despise the sensory feeling of it. And yes, most softeners contain slaughterhouse „waste", animal fat being used as cationic surfactant to „smooth" the fabric. So it actually gets smeary as well as clogged

Get yourself some 100% Flax Linen Towels. A real game changer.

I like soft towels now but had to learn to like them. Because it felt like I shouldn't be getting them wet

Plus if your home has a septic system, fabric softener is terrible to use because of the oil in it. May as well pour the bacon grease down the drain after making breakfast. (similar effect)

Im not big on air dried towels. But i never use softener. I agree that fluffy towels are awful. Like the big plush "luxury" towels. They don't soak up water. I prefer a really basic towel. I do tumble dry though.
